A new type of website attack is a potential threat to all businesses

Hi

I'm a web developer and digital marketer for a medium-sized UK probate genealogy company, Anglia Research.

I've finally got round to joining these forums because we're suffered repeated attacks of our website, resulting in it being removed from Google search results and replaced by dummy clone sites, in order to prevent potential customers contacting us. We presume the anonymous attacker is a competitor. Our local police are uncovering multiple layers of anonymity but have not yet caught them.

As far as I am able to tell so far from searching the Internet this seems to be a new kind of attack (we call it "clone-and-click-farm") and it may be connected to changes in Google algorithms. An article about our experiences and giving some advice on fighting back can be found on the Anglia Research website (sorry I am too new on here to be allowed to post a link to it).

A secondary motive for the attacks might be to try to try to silence us. We have been publicising these to politicians and the dummy sites have had all our campaign materials removed.

Anyway the long and the short of it is that there are currently several things I want to achieve on these forums:
  • Warn people about this type of attack.
  • Find other people who have suffered this type of attack.
  • Share knowledge with them.
  • Reach out to people who might be interested in our heir hunter fairness campaigns or be able to give us advice.

Fixed asset new venture

Ashley I can only speak from my experiences within the commercial property sector when I awarded contacts for instance out to say an M&E Company they would complete their own asset register and tag all plant machinery. This would also go for cleaning companies, Security etc. etc.

So not sure if there is a big enough market / work for an independent service you really need to go out and test the market place.

Formation advice

By creating a group where TOPCO owns NEWCO then you can potentially use any losses on the profits of the other company. Especially if NEWCO is going to incur losses. This reduces your tax and maximizes cash. I would ask your accountant to set this up for you.

If they are owned by you the INDIVIDUAL then both will have separate tax structures. You would also not risk losing both companies if one becomes insolvent.

How to create professional videos without breaking the bank

Do those videos that tell you how to do your own accounts and not involve an accountant convince Ronch that what he does to earn a living can be replaced with a phone app and monthly subscription?

Hi paulears and The Byre,

By no means, I think that an iPhone could replace a video professional in terms of the quality and of video production and I'm sure that you guys are experts at your craft. However, mobile video does provide a reasonable alternative for those who can't afford a complete service at first.
And yes, the same goes for accounting these days. For some small businesses, the support of an online app will suffice.
I think that businesses do realize that in any market if you would require expert guidance and advice there's a cost accompanied to it.

about tax

You will need to become VAT registered - and get a VAT registration number - before you can claim the VAT back.

Once you have VAT registration you will be required to make a quarterly VAT return. If you only have expenses, you will receive a VAT refund.

However, it is potentially likely that you will be asked some questions if you have no income at all at that stage.
