What type of decisions do you find most difficult to make?

In an interview for a job I was presented with a set of questions and given 10 minutes to write down the answers. I finished 19 of them quickly then returned to the first.
Q: Given the opportunity, would you A; Stop the next world war or B: Solve all the worlds health problems?

On the basis that I took several minutes thinking about an answer it was determined that I didn't like making decisions! I was tempted to ask if, given the choice, the interviewer would prefer to balance a Cowpat on his head for evermore or stand barefoot up to his ankles in xxxx!

I don't like stupid questions.

(PS: It's a glass, it has water in it - end of story;))

How is Employee's NIC recorded in PnL?

So basically what you report to HMRC is not the same amount that you recieve in your personal account. Deductions must be made?
Your Payslips should clarify the position for you.
Payslips will show the Gross Salary which will appear in Director's Remuneration in the P&L as a cost to the Employer along with Employer NICs which are another cost to the Employer.

Then the Payslip will show 'deductions' including PAYE Income Tax and Employee NICs both of which are subtracted from the Gross Salary to arrive at Net Pay, which is what your Employer pays over to your personal bank account.

You have mentioned what you report to HMRC? Well what you report to HMRC is shown on your Payslips isn't it?

What's on your Payslips should match up with the various Accounts in the P&L and Balance Sheet such as

P&L
DIrector's Remuneration
Employer NICs

Balance Sheet
Wages Payable
PAYE Payable
NIC Payable

The Balance Sheet items should zero out to 0.00 as each period is paid via the bank.

The P&L items accumulate through the year culminating in the whole year cost to the Employer at EOY.

An overlooked pressure affecting many small businesses?

It feels like there’s an opportunity just before that point, where a simple, structured conversation could stop things ever needing to become a formal dispute in the first place.

The message is quite clear. All companies bug or however small MUST have a Shareholders Agreed and, especially for smaller companies, maintain a discipline where no decisions are made informally over a pint or other than in person but at a regular (monthly?) meeting (can still be over a pint but with an agenda and agreed Minutes. Simple to operate and adds a social element to the business relationship. Be fiends with your co-directors/co-shareholders and never be afraid to raise issues of concern.
Completely agree Graham. Good structure and communication habits make a huge difference.

What we’re increasingly seeing though is that even where agreements and processes exist, people often drift away from them gradually once pressure, stress or relationship strain starts to build.

That’s usually the stage where issues are still resolvable, but where business owners often don’t know how to reset the conversation constructively before positions harden.

That gap between ‘something doesn’t feel right’ and formal dispute is the area we’re becoming very interested in.

Looking to help a few small businesses with a free website

whilst latency is important you need to look at the context. For example, you don’t need the whole page to load instantly. You need to get above the fold content in place and then let the rest of the page load.

The architecture of the site is key as is your hosting. An example is using a CDN. This can slow down initial page loads.

So it’s not just about latency, there are umpteen other factors to consider.

'Can I just...' is killing me!

As a one man business myself, I'm all too aware of the amount of hats needed, but believe me....AI is your friend....having coded up my own 'automation' for repetitive tasks over the past 10yrs, it was an eye opener just what AI can do....I'm relatively late to the AI party (I've only been using it the past couple of months, but it's just amazing at taking out the grind...and quickly)...it's literally akin to having one hyper efficient unpaid employee! (possibly more!)

Seriously step back...analyse where your biggest wins would be (i.e. those tasks that are repetitive & time intensive) & start chatting with AI about how to remedy...this will rescue you back some time to focus & get busy with your products.
I would love to hear what kind of workflows you automated with AI. What sector are you in?

93% of operators face sanctions at Public Inquiry – what's the one thing you've checked today that could save your licence?

David – this is a brilliant breakdown. 👏

You've nailed the shift: it's not about having records anymore. It's about interrogating them. Why are you seeing repeat defects? Why is that brake imbalance percentage still there after three PMIs? Why did no one question the advisory note from last inspection?

Third-party accountability is the silent killer. Operators assume the agent or dealer is doing the work properly. But when an S-mark prohibition lands, the Traffic Commissioner doesn't ask the agent – they ask the operator. Their compliance gap is your liability gap.

The operators staying ahead are doing exactly what you said:

- Drivers can't progress jobs without clearing defects
- Data is reviewed weekly, not just filed quarterly
- Third parties are audited like internal departments

*We're covering this at Transport Conference 2026 – root cause analysis, third-party auditing, and building compliance systems that withstand scrutiny. 23 September in Birmingham. Invergold Associates Ltd

Would be great to hear more about the system you're developing – sounds like exactly what the industry needs.
Appreciate that Invergold, thank you.

You’ve nailed the shift, it’s no longer about having records, it’s about being able to stand behind them under scrutiny.

What’s becoming clear to us is that most operators aren’t short of data, they’re short of a consistent way of challenging it and joining it up, especially once third parties are involved.

That gap is where a lot of the risk is sitting.

We’re developing a more structured, practical way of dealing with that, part system, part process, but focused on making it work day to day rather than sitting on the side.

Still early, but it’s been shaped by exactly the kind of issues you’ve highlighted here.

Be good to compare notes at some point, feels like we’re looking at the same problem from similar angles.

I'm unsure about what payment gateway to use

Hi

Not an expert but suggest that you could look at other payment processors such as stripe and so forth.

If your current website bundle allows you to accept payments, it should give you a clear detail on the fees, which you can compare. Those payments will integrate into your orders too saving you some manual work.

For now it might be worth using the payment acceptance service they provide, until you realise perhaps there is a lower rate out there.

AI integration in business processes

Hello community,
I'm Pandora and I manage a small ecommerce business specializing in the sale of guides. I'm seeking to enhance their polish and appeal as I prepare to promote them to a larger audience. Additionally, I would welcome suggestions for straightforward methods to improve my digital products.
AI has gained significant traction in business applications today. However I remain uncertain about its suitability for this purpose, despite encouragement from my Sellvia mall.
What are your thoughts? Is leveraging AI appropriate for refining digital products?
Before considering what AI can be leveraged. You need to first look at what specifically your target and goals are. What are you looking to achieve with promoting to a larger audience and also much more your overall goals.

Thats then when you can look at how you currently do things and where simple automation can facilitate some things and where AI can further enhance other areas of your work.

Going in blind with lets do AI here is a recipe for a mess and disaster

SA302 form question

AI comes up with this:

When you submit your Self Assessment tax return online, the SA302 (Tax Calculation) and Tax Year Overview generated from the HMRC website serve as the official proof of income, often used for mortgages. [1, 2]
Does it have a barcode?
The documents generated and downloaded directly from the HMRC online portal (PDF format) do not typically feature a physical barcode on the side, unlike older paper-based submissions. Instead, lenders accept these documents based on the following: [1, 2, 3]

  • HMRC Logo: Present on the document.
  • Unique Tax Reference (UTR): Clearly displayed.
  • Client Name and Tax Year: Clearly displayed.
  • 100% Complete: The status indicated on the calculation

Is this worth building for UK makers? Free samples in exchange for real feedback

Thank you for the feedback. There are two sides to this what I think is :
1. Business Promotion Some businesses don't really care about feedback; they're just using it as a way to market themselves and get their name out there.
2. Forced Feedback. For businesses that actually care, they can turn on an option that forces customers to leave feedback before booking another free sample. The form is structured around whatever they want to know: product quality, appearance, taste, etc., like a survey. Customers can still browse other free samples, but they can't book one until they've reviewed the last.

Money paid to liquidated companies bank account

Thank you for the responses.

Yes, I believe the companies bank account was overdrawn. The payment was made two days after the liquidator was appointed.

I think it does sound like an argument with the bank is needed (probably both my bank and their one).

In this situation, it was a relatively small amount, it is somewhat concerning that if it was a significant amount of money then it could be extremely painful.

I guess I could also not pay the new company, not sure this is the ideal situation though.
Be careful - 'Newco' can then pursue you for non payment as it's unlikely to b their fault you paid into the wrong bank account...
