New moderator?

I think the 20 mins worth of spam postings (at the time of this thread) from joeaki1983 is proof enough that we should think about getting a new moderator who is available at these times. It's 12:47am which isn't that late and 364 people are still browsing the site.

The mods and admins do a great job of cleaning up spam but for a community of this magnitude, it can't afford to be vulnerable - especially for this long.

Nice one Scott, Yep I've just marked one as Spam, even though everybody else will have marked them all anyway.

Might be an idea to bring someone on maybe not as a super mod, but as a form of night watchman that has the power to delete threads only or something.

I run a vBulletin board and I've had only two spam posts in well over a year.

There are add-ons to vBulletin that stop this kind o' thing you know!...

Same here, I sleep for a few hours in the day and work at night, find it a lot easier, even more spam from finext213 I know mods clear it up by around 12 but like mentioned above, we need a night watchman!

Ner, they are usually dealt with first thing Scott, I have never seen the previous nights spam around at my usual time of first logging on which is about 7am ish! And lets not forget that Duane is a late night man mostly, just sometimes I presume little things like having a life and family might get in the way!!

Is there a way that the board could have either of the following features?


1)any members with lets say 100 plus posts who reports a spam violation then has the spam message put in a folder for approval by a mod?

2)Senior members of the forum have thread suspension rights?

Yeah I know, I'm not quite sure when this latest batch of spam was deleted today but they usually do a good job.

I don't really think it's a case of debating my point since I don't think getting a new moderator has any negative effects if the person has common sense who we can trust. I fully respect that Duane can't always be around at that time of night due to family and work etc. It's easier for everyone to solve that problem by getting another mod on board.

What do you think?

I vote new mod! I think they should be responsible, be online for at least a total of 3 hours from 1am through 7 am. UKBF should get people to apply then everyones application available to UKBF members to view then vote for the best one

I vote we just get Sift to set up the forum with the add-ons and modifications that VBulletin have already to prevent spam.

Also, users with less than 20 posts shouldn't be allowed to PM.

Hi everyone,

We have pointed this thread out to Sift, so I am sure someone from there will respond to it by tomorrow at the latest.

At the moment there are quite a lot of mods who spend a great deal of time n UKBF. The vast majority of time there is a mod on here at night-not all night of course! We do get spammed overnight but as suggested there must be ways to stop this happening without human intervention!

It'd be hard preventing spam unless you close forums at night or just ban certain words for people with under 15 posts, I agree with the idea of people with under 20 posts not being able to PM but disagree aswell because some people are genuine.

 

Most the spam seems to come from people in China, can we not put a block in place to block people in China accessing the forum?

Don't ban chinese people, some of them are actually genuine, banning chinese people partially could work I suppose or put a limit on how many posts they can post per 10 minutes or whatever.

Maybe they are Brits based in China. Maybe they are Chinese professionals who were educated in Britain and seek to retain ties. Maybe they have products well suited to the British market. For obvious reasons, I'm very much against restricting overseas visitors to these forums.

Anyway, let's take a leaf out of the Chinese book. They've learned our language, educated themselves well, built products and services that we want, and are reaching out to us. How many of us have demonstrated such a commitment to the global market?

I too think it may be worth having a few more mini-mods on the site, I would even be willing to volunteer (it gives me a excuse to browse for an hour or two!) if it would be of any help.

Just out of interest, does anyone know of a website where I could get 1000s of brand name products from China?

It's 25 spam posts, I wouldn't exactly call it just a few.

It only really becomes a big problem if Sift doesn't take some action and doesn't end up either implementing anti-spam methods or appointing some new moderators.

There's around 14 people with powers and none of them have been online during some fairly busy periods in two consecutive days. I'll admit it's definitely more noticeable because I can barely recall any time in the last two years I've been here where I've seen a spam thread stay up for more than a minute. Now they've stayed up for hours and this is the second day in a row.

So yeah, it isn't really an issue if Sift does take some action. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what they say.

Ref the spam. As has been pointed out, there are loads of plug ins around to deal with this automatically but at the end of the day we are talking the wee hours not during the day so is it as much of a problem as made out? I think not...

This is the thing though. I think the moderators and admins do a great job of taking care of the forum and any spam. Individually they all go above and beyond the call of duty in my opinion, especially when they have businesses to run.

I'd never expect them to police the forum 24 hours a day, what I would expect is for Sift to get some new help on-board to deal with any times when the forum is vulnerable.

Agree. If Sift want more mods then fine - but if not I don't really care as the Mods come on a clear up in the morning so it really doesn't bother me.

Scott - I know where you're coming form but what happens if your not around for a few nights - then who's the night police. I really don't see this as an issue.

I think you will find that the vast majority of those "visitors" are actually search engine bots
