I need to get my personal BT and Pipex phone and broadband changed and I have been looking around for business suppliers.

I have found XLN Telecom do an unlimited landline call and broadband package for £24.99 per month.

http://www.xlntelecom.co.uk/total-business.aspx

This seems really good to me but just wanted to make sure XLN telecom haven't got tons and tons of bad reviews before signing up with them.

So, have you used them?

What did you think?

I don't have any knowledge either way on XLN.

Generally I'd avoid any of the really cheap, known brand, consumer services and go for a small independent - it may cost a bit more but their service will be less congested.

All providers use BT for the exchange line part of their service and most also use their carrier network too so don't expect too much difference in actual quality.

(btw - in our experience BT's expensive business broadband is actually worse than its consumer service and using their consumer service for business can be quite a useful trick.)

Do look out for (very) long term contracts.

BT Wholesale is also increasing the price of their product to distributers like TalkTalk who are absolutely livid about it - if Ofcom allows the increase (quite likely), this means that everyone's price will increase dramatically soon - so kiss goodbye to 'free' broadband.

If the independents are using BT how can their service be less congested?

It's complex, but generally the mass market brands try to fill exchange equipment and back-haul pipes up to and exceeding capacity inorder to make any money at all. The smaller guys don't have enough customers to do that and they have to charge a little more.

For example, Bethere's low cost ADSL2 service was fantastic until they overfilled it with customers. We recommended it for almost 18 months but now we can't totally recommend it because in some parts of the country it's overtretched. In other parts it's still very good indeed. (They say this themselves.)

The industry no longer quotes contention ratio - if you find your provider guaranteeing ANY service it will be in terms of guaranteed throughput. But even expensive business broadband generally only guarantee 10% throughput.

It's still black magic I'm afraid.

Ive had 5 lines for about 4yrs and broadband for about 18months and all is good.
Ive had a couple of line faults which were BT fault and xln tried to charge me but it was more bt error as xln just passing on charge. I just refused payment and xln soon sorted it out for me.

Overall im very pleased and stayin put with xln.

:mad: DO NOT USE XLN BROADBAND!! EVER!!:mad:

Geez, where do I start? The lag time between signing up and receiving broadband is close to a month. One customer service agent told me it was because of their exclusive, proprietary superfast upgraded package that I had purchase. The next CSA told me it was BT holding it up at the exchange.

Next problem is patchy internet. The tech help people are useless. The told me to get a spare ADSL2+ router from a friend. I told them that my friends dont usually have spare routers, so the woman suggested I buy a new one (to replace the one week old cisco one).

Anyway, I jumped through all of the hoops and they booked an engineer to come out. The internet starting working again, so I called to cancel the engineer, but it cut out again while I was on the phone.

The tech reminded me that to cancel an engineer with 48 hours of the callout meant I would still have to pay, if there was an issue with my equipment or internal wiring.

He came around while the internet was working, unplugged my equipment, tried his which worked too, and left.

So, I've been charged the £165 + VAT and it's still dropping out. I asked to speak to escalations and the woman said "How about cancellations instead?"

So, I shall repeat:
NEVER EVER USE XLN BROADBAND. THEY ARE SCAMMERS!!

If anyone from XLN is reading this and thinks i'm being unfair, google Neo Marketing and call me. Ask to speak to Gene, or better yet, come around and we'll talk in person.

This is the most incompetent business ever!!

I was in a lengthy legally binding contract. My rates changed and rised through the roof.

They have no explanation as to why and the staff are very very rude.

The were repeating every word i said and taking the 'Michael'.
I asked for the reps name to get a reply of "why you want to know that for?"

I asked for a manager and got passed around 4 different people all laughing.

It was a simple request. I havent received a bill from them in 7 months and they have been taking over £100 per month although i make very few calls.

Lengthy? No you weren't all XLN contracts are 12 or 24 months.
First post to say this? 7 months and you are still paying and have done nothing to stop it?
You are not telling the truth are you?

Hi there, I'm a customer service agent at XLN. We would take the situation you've described very seriously, and so I would really like to get to the bottom of it. Do you have a number I can call you on? (Feel free to private message me it.) Alternatively you can call me on 0207 7933514.
Thanks, Amy

As a follow up to this thread I went with XLN for their telephone and broadband.

The telephone has been fine.

The broadband has never worked. On transferring over from Pipex/Tiscali the connection would drop at least twice a day, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes for an hour.

On ringing broadband support, who were very limited in what they were able to do I had to run ping reports for several days, still with connection dropping all the time, sent through my reports, and then said it was a problem with my equipment (my equipment worked fine for the previous 2 years)

In the end, not getting anywhere I got cable internet installed and stopped using the broadband from XLN. I requested to get it cancelled but was told I couldn't as I was in contract so had to keep paying the £15 a month.

Fast forward several months and I get a call from my 'account manager' trying to upsell me. On telling them of my issues they said they would call back, never heard from them again.

Fast forward another few months and another new 'account manager' rings me. This time sounds quite helpful and says I can cancel my broadband, which I was paying £15 a month for, this was within 4 months of the end of my contract, so would save me £60.

I tell her I was quite peeved as I'd been paying it for nearly 2 years previous. Anyway, she cancels my broadband and all seems good, saved £60.

I then got a bill through and I'b been charged £95 for cancelling my broadband within my contracted period.

XLN are a joke from start to finish for broadband

Ive been told the phone package with the 500 mins is really good especially as it includes those rip off 0845 & 0870 numbers. A few friends use it & have no problems.

We rely on the adsl too much to move it. Currently we use Be and its been wonderful with no problems.
We do get a crappy 3mb & told BT are upgrading the local exchange to 20mb shortly but the speed at the moment is fine for us

:mad:I have been with XLN for 6 years I dont find them very cheap now, most of my calls are to businesses who are now on 08 or 03 numbers which do not fall into the free realm of calls. I now feel I am paying too much per month.
I tried to change to another company only to be told I can't unless I pay them a fee of £200 to get out of the contract.
Please note this is a auto renewing contract and I was not informed when it was renewed, also if you change to another tariff whith them the contract starts again from that date, but again you are not told this.
After being with them for 6 years, you would have thought they might waiver this fee but it seems they get a bit nasty if you try to leave them.
just a heads up for anyone thinking of joining them, to join is easy but dont try to leave

Quite shocked to hear they have an auto renewing contract. I thought firms had stopped using them now.
We were considering switching shortly after good reviews by others.

Im not sure how legally binding these are though.
Quite a few years back I did a little work with a telecoms company.
They turned out to be a bunch of rogues and con atrists and were using auto renewing contracts and really screwed customers at every opportunity.

I know dozens of customers fought back & won. Im not sure if it was the wording on the contracts or if they didn't stand up legally.

I did hear certain mobile phone retailers were using these contracts again.

This is one of the reasons why we never get into longer than a 12 month contract on any services and we usually manage to knock em down to 30 days notice.
Providers do protest but we seem able to do it with 90% of these firms or don't give them our business.

Here at www.jamesrobertangusparker.co.uk we sell broadband at a price that beats your current offer.

If you have a provider we will beat there offer if it is over £10.00.

Please note there is a one off standard bt migration fee £40.00. This is the only time you will have to pay BT line fees.

We ask you provide us with 2 forms of ID Which is displayed on our webpage.

I hope we can be of service to you. We are also kean to beat any offer XLN give you, as we can also offer business lines on the same unlimited bandwidth deals as our residential package.

Regards

I've been with XLN for years and it is true, their price advantage has lessened following recent large increases but they still retain a diminished advantage.

You only need to pay the £200 penalty if you do not provide the required notice, which from memory is 3 months and after you have completed the contract period which is usually 24 months. I have cancelled XLN lines when I closed down an office with giving notice and they did add the £200 to each line as a cancellation fee but soon took it off the bill when I told them no way.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I need to let people know about what this company did to me.

I am sitting here absolutely dumbstruck at what has happened to me today!

First of all I got a tele-sales call (despite the fact that I am registered with TPS) from a company who would not name themselves asking if I would like to save money with my phone bills. I said "No" and told them that they were in violation of TPS by contacting me.

Instead of backing off they then started calling me every 15 minutes - a different person each time - I heard s******ing in the background. Each time the number was not displayed (or withheld).

On one occasion today they called three times one after the other. In total I logged 25 calls. On the last call they told me they were calling from Cum Piss Power and they wanted to know if I wanted to change my electricity.

But on this occasion they must have either done it from a different line or forgot to withold their number and I managed to get it by doing 1471. The number was 0207 820 4703 - I called this and got an automated message saying it was XLN Business Services and I should call 0808 168 3092

I called the 0808 number and relayed all of this to the sales person who answered and they confirmed that I had been called by them today (would not admit to how many times) and they would remove me from their list. I have not had a call from them since!

I am so angry to have been treated this way, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - they are unprofessional and rude. And in an industry where there is so much competition I do not understand it.

a note to all you guys--- if you have less than 10 employees telco companies are not allowed to automatically roll your contraxt over you should be on a 'month by month' contract.

this was set by ofcom as the 'ARC ruling' so dont let them frighten you!!

My personal issues with XLN ...

DONT get connection from XLN telcom, not even 15 days get new connection the line already down for more then 7 days....

Even not 1 month , you not happy with the service, and if you choose terminate then they charge you 300£ more... BE CAREFULL with this !!!!!! EVEN ONLY a FEW DAYS they will do this...

That my personal Opinion.... Better to pay more , compare loss the customer.... and seems they dont care " that what my experiance".

Overall = VERY NOT recommended

Thanks

I worked as a field representative for 4 weeks siging businesses up to their supposedly fantastic service. I was told by Danny Maguira I would be self employed for my first 10 applications and would be paid £40 per app. My area manager was Kevin Kelly assigned us to the areas and it was literally cold calling any business we could find and getting them to switch. I was also told for any electric/ gas comparison I would get £15 and once my 10 apps were done I would get a £16, 000 basic and a contract. I did well over 20 applications and still received nothing other £60, and YES you did read that right.

After grafting all hours monday to saturday it had reached Christmas and because I was paying all my expenses and travelling as far as Sheffield from Manchester and paying what was now a large phone bill, I was glad to hear everyone was having time off. I now started chasing Kevin Kelly for my money I was owed.

I kept getting told excused from the bank was shut, to he was flying out to Ireland. I didn't get a penny and couldn't afford to buy a single Christmas present to my family thanks to them. Alls I was left with was a huge phone bill and after Christmas they just ignored all contact from me.

I have emails about the commission rates and some of the contracts I completed with my customers so any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Hi
We decided to change providers for our company. As costs were increasing ect.
I was promised no disruption to our business, full internet which we had would not be disrupted .. Until xln could set this up.
As they didn't check this line correctly, we ended up with no Internet for over three weeks.
On the 26 th I was promised fast tract which they would pay for of 150 pounds ... Which never happened .. I called up support over 25 times emailed daily the staff are rude, unhelpful from abroad only ..
And after 11 days then returned the call.

I requested the manager call me but waited again weeks

I would not recommend any business use this company unless the service improves 1000%

I was going to sign up to them and phoned up to get a quote but after mixed reviews and the price put me off they would not even wave the set up fee if I signed up there and then, I am still getting after 2 weeks loads of phone calls to sign up.

I signed up to talk talk business used them before and never had any issues, and even got them to wave the set up fees if I signed up there and then, bonus.

It would seem that some of you have been caught out on impulsive purchasing; observing what seems to be a great deal only to tie into something that is a disappointment.

I would also recommend that if you are still with this service provider and still experiencing problems in service consult with Ofcom; I think you will find that you consumer rights will be upheld should you be looking at cancelling your agreements.
