Hi there,

As I provide event staff to the London area only I wanted to limit my ppc campaing to this area. I tried using a radius of 15 miles, when I do this I then get a list of city/borough I can add... if I don't add any, save and then go back to my add it looks like my add will infact appear in the very centre of london only....I am a bit confused...

Have you tried opening the map and drawing your area on it. This way you can make it any shape you want.

You also need to think about people who work in that area but live or work outside the area and may do searches from home/office based in a different area

So you may consider advertising nationally for terms which include your geo location ie.

Blue widgets london
Blue widgets kensington
Blue widgets hammersmith

Hope this helps

Hi...

AdWords has recently updated their Location setting interface (now similar to Facebook in that it provides estimated reach)...

What you need to do (and it is easy to miss), when you set your 15 mile radius around London, on the bubble there is a small "add" tag (circled)...

Click this and it will change to "added" and the circle will turn blue...

Click done and then Save when you return to the settings tab.

Additionally you can use AdWords advanced location targeting to optimise your reach. I wrote a post on this topic a few weeks ago which I've posted below:-

In AdWords, under advanced location options, select Targeting Method, you then have three options:-

Target using physical location: Device-based location signals
AdWords show your ads to users located within your target area. However, if users include location terms in their query, and those location terms don't fall within your targeted area, those users won't see your ads, even if their query exactly matches a keyword.

Example

Target Location: Edinburgh
Target Keyword: Hotels
User Location: Edinburgh
User Query: Hotels
User Sees Your Ad: Yes

Target Location: Edinburgh
Target Keyword: Hotels
User Location: London
User Query: Hotels
User Sees Your Ad: No

Target using search intent: Location terms in user queries
AdWords only show your ads to users who include a location-specific term in their query that's relevant for your location targeting, ignoring where the user is located.

Example

Target Location: Edinburgh
Target Keyword: Hotels
User Location: Edinburgh
User Query: Hotels
User Sees Your Ad: No

Target Location: Edinburgh
Target Keyword: Hotels
User Location: London
User Query: Edinburgh Hotels
User Sees Your Ad: Yes

Target using either physical location or search intent (recommended)
AdWords show your ads to users located in your targeted area and to users who include terms specific to your targeted area within their search. This is applicable only if the location the user is searching for is in the same country where the user is physically located.

Example

Target Location: Edinburgh
Target Keyword: Hotels
User Location: Edinburgh
User Query: Hotels
User Sees Your Ad: Yes

Target Location: Edinburgh
Target Keyword: Hotels
User Location: London
User Query: Edinburgh Hotels
User Sees Your Ad: Yes

You also have a further option to set exclusion methods, by physical location or by physical location and search intent.

My biggest piece of advice is once you've configured your settings then, test, test, test using the ad preview tool with different location settings to make sure you are getting the desired results.

Hi Andrew, thank you for the detailed and helpful reply, that's exactly what I was missing! Looking at the box with the list of cities there is add all, add...surely that's a bit confusing.

Anyway it's now sorted, Thank you all.
