Site shock.

I built my web site using Serif software. OK before the purists jump down my throat, I am not an expert.
I do have one question though.
I run Firefox and did do a screen check on my site and it looks fine. That is, on my computer.

Whilst at a friends home, who also runs firefox we loaded up my site.
I was shocked to see the home page. The main text box ended in the middle of the last line of text. The text was a lot smaller then it should be. Not his text settings by the way.
Also, the whole site fills my screen and you have to scroll down slightly to see the last bit but on his it finished halfway down the screen.
As I say, his personal settings were fine.
Any ideas what is happening there?

Hi Panda

Works fine for me. I'm on FireFox, with a wide-ish laptop screen at a resolution of 1280x800.

Hope this helps (though it obviously isn't going to explain what's gone wrong on your friend's monitor...)

Yes he uses windows XP and Firefox web browser. Exactly the same as me.
It just worried me a little that what I am seeing is not what he is seeing and possibly many others too.

A perfect example of why it pays to hire a professional to build your website.

Everyone has different screen setups, screen font settings, resolutions, colour range settings and a professional web developer would check and know how to build your site so that these differences have less impact.

These are things you learn though experience and why WYSIWYG editors and site builders will never replace an experienced web developer.

It is very hard for anyone to give you an answer as what we see and what you see may be the same but your expectation may be different. Best to get two screen shots, one from yours and one from your friends and point out the differences so we can understand what they are in your eyes.

Problem is Servwise that as a fairly newish business with children to support and a home to run the business is not in the position as yet to afford fairly hefty fees of a professional web site builder. Maybe in a few years it will be but for now I have to live on a shoestring budget whilst getting my business know.
A web site is not at the top og my list for getting local customers. Its really just a point of reference where people can contact me.

Going back to the original question, do you know if his version of FF is the same as yours? It shouldn't make a difference but it might.

The problem with the site is that serif uses positioning to place elements on the page. Get rid of the positional styles and all should be OK.

There are various affordable ways to have websites managed professionally.

That aside... it looks fine on this XP with FF3.

Thanks Fisicx. How would I go about doing that.
Mind you, I am thinking it is something to do with his computer as everyone I have asked to look at the site say it appears OK.
He has e mailed me this morning to say it is playing and it was running very slowly so maybe I am worrying over nothing.

Has your friend tried deleting his internet cache, and re-visiting your site? It might be that he was last there when your site was in a state of editing, and clearing the cache might bring up the latest version.
