Should I run the Windows 10 update now or wait

An option to update my desktop PC to Windows 10 has just appeared. Should I do it yet or wait for the bugs?
Will all my software run or will that have to be upgraded as well?
Have you upgraded yet?
Thanks for your input

Don't do it!

Not unless you are happy for Microsoft to slurp all your data and auto update anything it wants at any time.

It is a better OS than win8 but it does have a few issues. There is a supposed service pack coming out in September, I'd wait until then.

And expect to start paying for all sorts on things.

You do have the option in the install process to limit the amount of information you share with Microsoft if you select the Custom option.

I've installed it on both my desktop and laptop. The two issues I have found so far are the touch pad on the laptop not working and the anti virus software having to be updated as soon as the install was complete.

But you cannot block the auto updating or the auto reboot. This is the thing most people are struggling with.

MS is going to make money by pushing paid services. It will make you aware of these services by downloading apps and nagging you to buy. Like solitaire. I know you probably don't play it anymore but it now comes with adverts. If you don't want adverts you have to pay an annual
subscription.

My personal opinion would be to wait for a while so that any issues can be ironed out.

If you do decide to go ahead, I would suggest that you fully back up everything that is on your computer first. That said, I would like to think that everyone has a back up of all of their important data.

I use Windows 7 on my main laptop and am quite happy with it so won't changing. I will put Win 10 on my spare as i will need to have a working knowledge of it for what I do for a living.

Solitaire always reminds me of Windows 3.1 :)

Who would have thought it, ads in bloody solitaire!!!!! One of the richest software companies on the planet sinking to new lows, ha ha ha, ridiculous!

I've updated and it has messed up all my date time settings :(

Dates are now in format 06/22/2015 where they used to be 22/06/2015

Right rigmarole trying to get it back as dd/MM/yyyy isn't listed as an option to change back too.
You have to go in to additional settings to do it.

I've done it. Had the insiders version for about a year now though. It's a good change. Better than 8.1. Your machine will tell you what softwares compatible etc before you update

Thanks for all the comments. More welcome as still undecided as I don't have an IT department to put it right if it goes wrong o_O

I have got windows 7. I don't see what benefit there is to updating? I haven't got a touch screen laptop? And doesn't updating eat into your space and ram etc?

What is the real issue around privacy then, the targeted ads?

I did the upgrade on one of my laptops on the day of release and since rolled back to windows 8.1, which is very easy and comes as a feature.

Had a number of issues with stability when doing a few things at once and major issues with standby mode which meant a full reboot every time I tried to bring it back from sleep mode.

Normally would have waited until the first big service pack is out but wanted to see what it was like and apart from the above liked it more than windows 8, mostly because of the gui which is much more like XP.

More to do with the EULA which says Microsoft can and will access your data and report back to Redmond every single thing you do. This is the default set up and while it is possible to turn it off, MS don't make it easy. And users have found the automatic rebooting can reset everything.

People point out that Facebook does the same thing but you aren't forced to use FB or any other website. Windows10 is adware and spyware all rolled up into one. And it lets the bloke next door use your WiFi for free because his details are in your contacts.

Windows 10 already knows your password (it's how it connects to t'internet). It uploads this to the servers at Redmond and uses this to allow the bloke next door to connect to your WiFi if he has Windows 10 as well. He won't know your password but he does get free access.

Not only this but if you have already downloaded an update your computer will let your neighbour use your download to update his own PC.

Why?

I mean the WiFi sense and sharing access.

Why have Microsoft included this feature in Windows 10? I can see a lot of negatives for it, but, perhaps playing devil's advocate, imagine you work for Windows PR, can you explain the benefits of WiFi sense?

Well on the plus side it means if your friends come over they can access the internet without you having to hand over your network key. Although some routers already offer this feature.

That's it really and the potential security risks far outweigh the pros, especially as you can't choose which specific users can have access.

I updated 2 PC's from W7 a few months ago and have had very few issues.

If you have the latest hardware, within a couple months, I might hold back, due to possible driver issues, or is you are using some old peripherals, for the same reason, but, otherwise, I am happy!

Most people agree that win10 is a better OS than 7 or 8. What many have issues with is the control MS exerts over how you use that OS.

Even if you turn on all the privacy settings you are still giivng MS control over your machine. Syncing to OneDrive and auto updating for example. You will start to see all sorts of apps and features appearing on your PC that you didn't request or even want and you will not be able to uninstall them either. And some of then have reportedly overridden your privacy settings.

And when cortana arrives fully in the UK you will be using Bing for everything. There is no alternative.

Gosh, @fisicx's points really put me off Windows 10.

@Bob I'd echo the comments that if you don't have a touchscreen laptop or particular need for Windows 10 then it'd be sensible to wait. You can claim/reserve your free upgrade now so you can always do it later, and simply not perform the upgrade yet.

In most cases the risks outweigh any potential reward at the moment, especially for business use.

The main reason to upgrade now would be if you have a touchscreen laptop running windows 8.1 for example, or for personal use if you particularly want Windows 10.

I was looking forward to upgrading (I have a touchscreen laptop with wacom digitiser for my personal laptop), however I'm unsure about driver support and the privacy/control points are rather disconcerting.

I imagine there will be be a big backlash and even EU anti trust cases brought against Microsoft if they go that far. If it gets enough media attention they'll likely do a U turn like they did with Kinnect for the XBox One.

I suppose they can argue only allowing Bing is acceptable if you're using their own Cortana software, but they certainly won't be able to do that for the Edge browser without some lawsuits coming their way.

Integration of services can be very convenient and useful but the walled garden trend is rather troubling.

Also why didn't they just make the desktop live tiles based? Who uses their desktop anyway? I would have thought that'd be a better way to integrate it. I haven't looked closely at Windows 10, but if people are still double clicking icons on their desktop on a new OS in 2015 then something's wrong in my opinion.

You have to go in to additional settings to do it.

I spotted the date issue as well, Sage moaned like hell when it tried to run as a result of this change. It also turns off Windows Defender and messes up mapped drives. You have to disconnect and reconnect mapped drives to make them work again. It also resets all the security settings to standard so if you've altered anything in the registry then all your work is undone.

And not all computers will upgrade to 10. At the last minute it tells you things like your CPU is not up to scratch, so Pentium 4's have had it. It's a good time to consider Linux in this case.

I have upgraded from win 8.1 to win 10 for nearly 2 weeks and I think that's Ok. All of your software and your settings are unchanged. From my experience, window 10 is faster. Just a little bit problem with the touch pad at the beginning, however after an update, it was fixed.

If you are using win 8.1 with copyright and want to experience new features in win 10, go for it!

Wow, sounds like they learnt nothing from the long and expensive anti-trust case when they bundled IE with Windows 95/98/2000.

I won't ever be using it thankfully.

Hazel,

Have you enabled all the privacy settings? If not you have allowed MS total access to your computer and anything you have stored on the computer. They will be tracking everything you do and will be 'suggesting' apps based on what you do. Did you know for example that they are uploading your files to the cloud without your knowledge (or permission). And did you know they can download anything they like to your computer without your permission...

I've used Win10 last circa 6 months while it's been in Technical Preview. Had very little issues, in fact since the full RTM release it's been perfect. Much better than Win7 and 8.1 - so much more fluid, responsive, startup is blisteringly quick etc. Kudos to Microsoft, best OS to date I say...

I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 10 until I get a new computer and since that won't be until 2017 or so I'll be quite happy on Windows 7 until then.

Perhaps by then all the privacy stuff will have been sorted out.

I just want to add an info to this thread as someone might be experiencing it after upgrading their OS to windows 10. Some of those who upgraded to windows 10 started to have problems with their emails setup on outlook and unable to send although the settings are correct. You may get an error similar to this:

"Sending’ reported error (0x800CCC13): ‘Cannot connect to the network. Verify your network connection or modem"

If you have already done checking you settings and nothing seems to work then you can perform this method:

Open the command prompt(CMD) and run as administrator then type the following:

sfc /scannow (there should be a space after "sfc") then hit enter and it will then start scanning and repair outlook. Wait for it to finish and restart your PC/Laptop and outlook should start working again.

We have seen these error on few of our customers who have upgraded to windows 10 so I just want to share it in case someone here is having the same problem.

Avoided until the first service pack is released.
Also you could find some of your programs aren't any longer compatible.

As far as I can see there is no major benefit in upgrading, the machine is probably worth more to you for earning money rather than having a nice user interface!

I've upgraded and been using it for a week now.

There is a reasonable amount of information about all the privacy changes and things like Wi-Fi sense online now (although not presented very well during the upgrade itself). Therefore you can get clued up.

Personally I am not hugely bothered by giving them data. Welcome to the age of big data. You get Windows 10 for free, they get your data. I believe that in time, we as the users will get some benefits from handing over the data. It would be pretty cool if I could go anywhere in the UK and have free Wi-Fi through something like Wi-Fi Sense (use a VPN guys!)...

The upgrade was surprisingly seamless. I came from Windows 7 and was expecting there to be potential issues with programs or at least my desktop icons to be arranged differently... Everything was exactly the same. More like a minor upgrade. Except boot up and boot down time is faster and the GUI has improved!

The only issue I have faced is I have more than 500 programs installed and there is currently still a bug that means they don't all show up on the Start Menu. You can download alternative Start Menu's online and I'm sure this will be fixed soon anyway. Other than that, the upgrade has been remarkably painless and I definitely prefer Windows 10 to 7. I encourage others to read a few articles online about the differences and then give it a try!

My tuppence worth, upgraded the day it was released, from 8.1, and it's sooooo much better. No issues, bugs, or hardware problems. Microsoft seem to have got right for the first time in ages!

If I run into such problem, I would backup the drive, clean it up and they would install Windows 7. I think this is the best OS Microsoft released EVER. It is pity Microsoft does not listen to its users.

Another alternative is to buy Mac.

I like Win10, I'm using it now. Nothing goes wrong for me.
I think you can give it a try, if you don't like it, you can re-install your old system.
