Should I run the Windows 10 update now or wait

Don't do it, let the Microsoft fix all the bugs that showed up lately. I updated from 8.1 to 10 on my ultrabook just because I was curious. That was a mistake, even If i was prepared for some bugs as I was already running Technical Preview before.

I'm holding off on my personal computer. I don't like apps, 'store' and other features that make Windows 10 computers look like glorified smartphones.

I made the mistake of registering for Windows 10 and despite removing the relevant Windows Updates, can't get my Windows 7 PC to stop trying to download it, which leaves it vulnerable in terms of updates.

Bit annoying you have to manually go through the privacy settings, but after using it for a while I had to jump back on my dads Windows 7 and really hated the old UI.

Lots a scare stories here, in reality most tech companies track usage etc. It's just that some are more open about it than others. Google have been doing it for years and everyone still uses their services.

And Wifi sharing (WIFI Sense) is off by default, I think the idea is sound really, it needs a little twerking maybe to allow you to specify contacts at the minimum.

What services? I use google for search and block cookies on youtube. And Google doesn't keep an eye on the emails I send or everything I do in the Internet..

Windows slurps a lot more than just tracking information. You can turn it off but every update resets your settings and you can't turn off the updates. The OS is good I agree but there is no need for MS to track what I'm searching for by default or to copy my emails to Redmonds servers.

So you use their search service? Which they track to push through targeted ads.

Google also scans all gmail emails, even deleted and draft ones. They also have servers which route non gmail emails which they likely scan.

So actually evan if you don't use their services (which you do as you use Search) your likely being tracked in some fashion anyway.

I'm not arguing that windows 10 is good or bad etc. just pointing out that they all do it. It's clearly wrong but theres little we can do to get around it. I wouldn't be surprised if the opt out buttons did nothing!

Oh and just to add every browser Safari/ Firefox etc uses Googles site blacklist checker before it takes you to a site, so whichever browser you use, you'll be using google's servers.

If you don;'t use gmail (like much of the world) then Google won't know about the email I send to my mum. But windows 10 does.

I choose to use Facebook or Google or whatever. I can block their cookies and use various tools to keep my usage private. These options aren't available in win10. The OS phones home even if you have found all the privacy settings.

Unfortunately thats not entirely accurate, there was an article I saw a while back in which they checked the email headers of emails sent when not using gmail (i.e. sending from hotmail to yahoo etc) And the email headers showed that the message had passed through Googles servers.

Obviously they also track Android phone users but the also track others, to the point that they were fined 20 million in 2012 for tracking iPhone iPad and mac users through the safari browser.

As mentioned most browsers use google servers and at the very least they will get the website your going to and your ip address.

Why not start moving over to Linux ? CentOs (Redhat's development platform). I worked for IBM and after a meeting with the security services, IBM now run redhat Linux on all their laptops/desktops (with virtual desktops for customers that still use windows). As Microsoft are so protective of their code, it is concidered a major security flaw by IT Professionals like myself and should you be able to move your applications to Linux, in my opinion its a wise choice. It took IBM six months to switch (upgrade laptops, replace laptops and install libreoffice etc).. That's lightening speed for a company of this size. In my opinion it demonstates how concerned they were.

Linux is a nice choice for servers, in reality though for workstation users it's just not feasible for certain business sectors. Designers/ construction etc. Application as you point out, is where it all falls apart.

I upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10 and regret it now. The main reason is down to performance, I have a new machine which is high spec and the upgrade came about 3 weeks after initially receiving the machine. The machine was highly responsive on windows 8.1 extremely quick with all applications running well. I was offered the windows 10 free upgrade and thought it would be a good idea whilst it is free. To keep this short, the machine now is extremely slow most noticeably when using browsers. From Edge, Chrome, Opera and Mozilla, all take a while to load, new tabs take a long time to start-up and generally the web pages are very slow. Its not the internet connection as we have fibre and I have tested over different connections. I am looking into rolling back to windows 8.1 although someone else posted on here that a lot of windows 10 files will be stored, so I may need to do a fresh system install. Any ideas?

A fresh install won't remove the Windows 10 files. And if you do manage to delete them, Windows 10 will download itself to your PC anyway and a patch for Win8 will start tracking everything you do even if you don't install Win10.

I was thinking more of formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows 8.1 from the DVD? surely that would remove all the Windows 10 files? I don't mind having windows 10 the issue is the performance currently on my machine. By the sounds of things no one else has really suffered like me so it could have been an issue with the initial upgrade install?

You can do all the formatting and fresh installs you like, Win 8 will update itself and start tracking and then win10 will download itself and start nagging you to upgrade.

Yes I do understand what you were saying regarding the updates for windows 8.1, the main issue may have been the upgrade from windows 8.1 to windows 10, it was a large install and something may have gone wrong in the process hence they slower performance. If I run a fresh install I think that will combat the performance issues, I don't have much choice to be honest.

You can turn off automatic rebooting - Start, Settings, Updates & security, Advanced options, Notify to schedule restart or Defer upgrades.
To stop W10 from going to sleep click Start and type Power Options. W10 will find the Power settings. Select Change plan settings, set 'Put the computer to sleep' to Never, then select Change advanced power settings, and go through each setting that might put something to sleep like USB, Disk drive, LAN...

Once W10 is activated you can do a fresh installation - wipe the disk drive or use a different drive. If your system is slow, download the W10 iso disk (and burn it), get an SSD and install a clean version.
