Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water - coincidentally all our international mail from yesterday wasn't scanned so likely something was afoot far sooner than they let on. As received from RM at 6pm today:

Royal Mail is experiencing severe service disruption to international export services following a cyber incident. We are temporarily unable to despatch items to overseas destinations.

We strongly recommend that you temporarily hold any export mail items while we work to resolve the issue.

Items that have already been despatched may be subject to delays. The following services for parcels and letters are affected:

  • Royal Mail International Tracked
  • Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed
  • Royal Mail International Standard
All export items already received by Royal Mail are being processed through the Royal Mail UK network and held securely for export processing to recommence as soon as the export despatch systems are available again.

We would like to sincerely apologise to impacted customers for any disruption this incident is causing.

Our import operations continue to perform a full service, with some minor delays. Parcelforce Worldwide export services are still operating to all international destinations though customers should expect minor delays.

Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this disruption and we will update you as soon as we have more information. We immediately launched an investigation into the incident, and we are working with external experts to resolve this issue.

Hacking systems is far more lucrative than drugs and prostitution. You can buy hacking software and ransomware on the dark web. I read the other day that crims now franchise their online activities.

As has been said numerous times, for any organisation it’s not if but when you will be hacked.

Don't even need to buy it on the dark web, the tools are out there freely available on the public internet as well.

Can get training and all sorts in Penetration Testing.

50% of RM rates to USA
An interesting service in these trying times that doesn't require any customs information for the sent goods - how does that work from a legal standpoint?

You do realise though that etail rates are compared against the legacy RM zonal pricings? When compared against the current RM country priced services, etail are over 50% more for the mid-band 1Kg rate and that excludes any collection charge for the UK leg

Etail-usa rates are compared to the equivalent RM tracked service to USA, which is RM code : MP1.

50% lower than RM at weights < 500g, expedited service so faster than RM.

Customs info IS required but electronically, no need for CN22 stickers.

Direct injection into USPS at either New York, Kentucky or Los Angeles.

Hundreds of UK online sellers using the service as service is US only, Tracked only and only for ecommerce.

    Don't really buy into this
I wouldn't normally either, however - we have 40+ US tracked parcels posted around 'Black Friday' weekend that have only just been scanned in our local Leeds depot. They obviously prioritised UK mail during the strikes, and I suspect they make a lot less profit on overseas stuff.

I'm not one for a conspiracy, but it does seem a bit strange that there is no estimate for when it will be sorted, even our account manager has said that it's not being discussed internally.

    It all seems very vague.

    Updated Customer Statement
Following the recent cyber incident, we are trialling operational workarounds and have started moving limited volumes of export parcels. While we trial these operational workarounds, we continue to ask customers not to submit any new export parcels into the network. Our initial focus will be to clear mail that has already been processed and is waiting to be despatched.

We are pleased to announce that we have resumed the export of letters to all international destinations. From 1900hrs (Wednesday 18 January), customers will be able to access international export letter services again via online shipping solutions to print labels and send items which do not require a customs declaration (personal correspondence items). Items can then be posted into the Royal Mail network and via Post Office from tomorrow (Thursday 19 January).

Royal Mail continues to work with external experts, the security authorities and regulators to mitigate the impact of this cyber incident, with a focus on restoring services for export letters and parcels. Our import operations continue to perform a full service with some minor delays. Domestic services remain unaffected.

We would like to sincerely apologise to impacted customers for any disruption this incident may be causing. Please be assured our teams are working around the clock to resolve this situation and we will update customers as soon as we have more information.

Has anyone sent overseas parcels on the 10th just as the hack was happening? I've got an order in Click and Drop that was collected on the 10th but shows:

    Postage applied 10/01/2023 14:13

    Label generated 10/01/2023 14:14

    Despatched Not despatched

    Manifested 10/01/2023 15:43

    We're expecting it 10/01/2023 16:40

which sounds like, although they've collected it, it hasn't been scanned anywhere and thus 'not despatched' which kind of makes sense given the current circumstances.

I wonder if all this will actually significantly harm Royal Mail further. In our case. we're so embedded in Click and Drop and its integration with our system, I'm not (yet) actively looking for a replacement overseas carrier...but I'm guessing some businesses might?

DHL are planning to relaunch their international service towards the end of next month, with postage to Europe in the single figures, and DDP offered to all EU destinations. I shall be watching.
Are you sure you mean DHL?

We've been using DDP to all of the EU via DHL since January 1st, 2021.... and IOSS for under €135 from when it became live.

Yes, I spoke to my DHL area manager yesterday, and that's what he said. It's more the large drop in prices that's the main draw.

Did you have to appoint an EU tax representative? If so, was that an extra cost?
