Problems with my boss...

I found this forum using google and think you can help me with my problem with myb ss i already wrote it once but lost the post and have to time it again

basically i am working for a house renovation company as a laborer and been working there for like 3 months or so. i only get paid £70 a day and i started on £60 3 months ago. we work 5 days a week so i get 350 a week which is **** compared to my friend who is a java developer and gets 600 per week for sitting on his bum all day. not only do i get paid crap money but also my boss i making me do so many stupid things.

1. last month he made me stay until 7pm on friday because we were running behind the deadline for the house and didnt pay me any extra
2. 2 weeks ago he made me drive the van from the building site to his house at 8pm and didnt pay me for the 2 hours that i lost
3. so far i worked on sunday twice and both times he paid me 80 pounds instead of the double £140 per day that he needs to pay me for working on sunday.
4. he does not come to pick me up in the morning so i have to walk for like 15-25 mins every single morning to the place where we meet.
5. the house that we renovate doesnt have any shops around so i have to wake up even earlier to make sandwiches for work because our lunch break is only 30 mins and by the time i get to the shop and come back the lunch break will almost be over.
6. his son lives in Manchester and from time to time comes to work and he pays him £75 per day which is more than me
7. i am getting depressed because of all this that is happening to me and my girlfriend asks me what is going on all the time

i really need to know what can i do about is as i cannot leave the company because it is hard to find a job so i simply want to get more money and be paid for the staff that i do for free outside the work times

my friend who does java development gets paid all sorts of bonuses for completed projects but i do not get anything like that

You can't compare a Java Developer job to a Labourer job.
Is it in your contract about double pay on Sunday?
Is it in your contract about overtime pay?

Speak to your boss regarding the extra hours you are putting in.
You are not in a position to question other employees pay, whether they are family or not.

4 and 5 aren't really your boss's concern. Getting to work and making sandwiches is a normal part of life.

6. isn't your concern. The boss can pay what he likes.

1 to 3 are, however, points you need to sort out. Do you have a written contract or letter setting out your employment terms in writing? If not, you are entitled to ask for this. Ask your boss to formalise your terms and to specify when overtime is payable and at what rate.

I am sorry but I have to be blunt and factual in this post -

It is kind of like comparing a doctor to a cleaner wages will be different as different job roles reflect different wages.

If you are working overtime and not getting paid to do it then don't do it - simple's or speak to your boss and raise your concerns (sometimes a simple and open conversation can cure many issues).

4 - Good excercise will never do anyone harm and to be honest I would imagine a large number of people commute to work daily for a lot longer than this.

5 - Come on - to be frank making sandwiches is better than buying the terrible pre packed stuff you get in the shop and is a lot healthier also. Many people make their lunch to take to work or pay heavily for something quick and easy. I would loathe buying anything for lunch when I can make myself something that I like. Unless of course there is a great family bakers nearby (on the rare occasion :)

6 - What he pays others is not your concern you need to concentrate on your wages and getting them right by talking to your boss.

7 - What is there to be depressed about - you have a job that pays fairly well in fact most builders around here are paying 40-50 per day. There are people out there a lot worse of.

To sum it all up speak to your boss and you might find this simple problem resolved.

Hope this helps

Dave

why is not a java job comparable to my job i do much more than sit on the computer all day. i dont want to be treated like second class because i dont have a degree in computer science...

You can't compare the jobs. As you said you don't have a degree, your friend has studied hard to achieve his qualifications, knowledge and experience.

Your job might be more physical but that doesn't mean to say you should get more money.
With all respect, you don't really need much qualifications with being a labourer, almost anyone can do that job if they wanted to but can almost anyone do the job of a java developer...I think not!!

Listen bucko, you are a labourer, nothing more nothing less. There are 100's if not 1000's of people who will fill your shoes once you are let go, which you will be if you keep yapping like you do.

Comparing yourself to a java developer is a no go, you are unskilled labour - the physical element may be tougher but that irrelevant.

£70 a day for unskilled work is good money in anybodys books. If you go down the line of yapping and complaining you will be shown the door quicker than it takes you to walk to the collection point every morning.

To be honest, I dont think you have much to complain about and seems like a bit of a winge about your job...

I think you need to get the basics in place such as a contract of employment so you know where you stand. If you dont have this in place, then how do you know you are entitled to double time on a Sunday? It isnt an automatic right.

I work in HR and have come across far bigger issues with people in their workplace such as bullying and harassment so I do think you have a lot to be grateful for in your role and you shouldnt be depressed about it. Unfortunately we live in a work culture where we can be expected to work extra hours to get the job done, but you dont appear to be asked to do this excessively. My boss doesnt pick me up in the morning, I and most others need to travel to work so I dont see why you think you should be chauffeured around...?

Getting that contract in place will clarify things for you and then you should talk your issues through with your boss - after all, he isnt a mind reader!

The other point to consider is if you are working as a casual labourer and being paid cash in hand.

If this is the case then you are actually doing quite well. If you are getting £350 in your hand each week, then you would have to be looking at a salary of £23500 pa if you were to try and get a job elsewhere for the same money.

I suggest you take a more mature look at this, speak to your boss about your overtime pay. If you are feeling undervalued, let him know that too. If you want more money, then demonstrate that you are a valuable asset to the business and then ask for a pay rise.

What's the worst that can happen? He can say no! If that happens then you can evaluate your options.

and on the other points, to be frank, I do think that you need to grow up a little.

OP, one assumes at the time of you posting that you are already at work today? The time it took you to post on this forum (whilst on pay presumably) you could have talked to your gaffer and had it sorted out......

I doubt he gets paid for sitting on his bum.

He just happens to be sitting while doing what they pay him to do.

But, if his deal is so sweet, why don't you work as a java developer, rather than a labourer?

When I was doing labouring I was only getting paid £40 a day, reason I left the job was because we were doing a price job where we get paid by the amount of windows fitted, everyone elses pay packet on that job went from £200 a day (standard wage) to £320 -£360 a day, while I was only getting £50 a day.

I think you have it quite lucky if I am honest. I'm now working as a website tester, part time and now only earning £23.20 a day. I need more money also which is why I have started on a little project to help bring some more money in on the side.

The best thing is, I have no clue what I'm doing with this project, it's all new and I'm learning new things, which has it's own rewards over money.

Like others have said, if you got a problem with pay then talk to your boss but from what I can see, £70 a day, you got it pretty sweet there.

Brilliant OP!!!

Feel so sorry for you, your having such a hard time it's terrible, make your own sandwiches eh??

Life's tough innit!!

Tell your boss to stick it where the sun don't shine and take your obviously massive earning capacity, somewhere you'll be appreciated. Preferably somewhere with a cafe and a Playstation!!

Most ridiculous post I've ever read on here, quit your whinging and go and thank your boss for giving you a job that pays a good wage for manual labour. Get a car if you don't like walking.

I cannot believe this post! You must be 17, 18 years old max! that is the ONLY explanation for complaining about making sandwiches

It's not your friends fault he paid attention at school and became a Java Developer. Which is probably a lot harder than your job.

£75 for a labourer per day is good money.

Your boss can do what he wants with his business. He's not your personal driver, get your own way to work, he can pay his son what he wants, and for gods sack stop living like a kid!

Judging by your attitude, you're a naff worker and he's probably considering sacking you as we speak

i dont get £75 i get £70 and if you think that is good money you need to meet some of my friends who get somethink like £125...

i dont see the point of talking about it with you people any more...

You asked our advice and we have given it to you. If you can't accept it then your in the wrong place.
The majority of this forum are business owners / experienced people who have tried to help you out here.

Maybe your next point of call will be the job centre...

Got to be honest mate it don't sound as horrific as you are making it out. But if you have only been there a few months he might just be testing you/pushing you a bit to see if you are a good worker!

If you feel so bad about the job try something else, like a java developer! ;]

Ok lets give this a try.

    1) You should of said to him at the time, Are we getting paid extra for this?
In the construction industry, A lot of people will work to a price.
IE: 10k to do said job..
If it takes 2 days, Great! if it takes 2 months :( Then you earn less.
This is basically what "contracting" is and your boss may be paid like this..
Either way, Bring it up at the time...

    2) Once again, You should of asked about this at the time. Yes it indeed sucks , However you need to man up and say "am i getting paid for this?"

    3) At least you got paid £10 more than normal... Ive worked in jobs where sundays are the same rate as normal.. So thats good! ( Even if you dont have it in your contract )

    4&5) Thats life.
I have to make sarnys in the morning, pay for my petrol and drive to work.
    All unpaid before starting work.

    6) Look for another job. Simple as really. Sorry :(

Tbh, your money is not bad compared to people I know who work 13 hour days , 5 days a week and take home less than £800 a month!

    A)
Im a highly skilled network engineer and Java , C & PHP programmer.
Comparing general labour skills to a Java dev just isnt gonna fly.

Ive worked as a labourer before and yes it can be hard work. But mentally. Its NOTHING!

Java dev is HARD , VERY HARD work. Yes he sits down. But at the end of the day im sure he is like me where he has trouble forming sentence.

    End of the day.

    • Working sucks
    • Pay is NEVER enough
    • Man up and confront your boss about these problems
    • Find another job.
    • Go to college and learn Java
