Mods do sometimes Alert when posts are deleted

I wouldn't have cared or noticed, but I found a notification this evening that said a post I made was deleted:
anonymous mod said:
Reason: deleted your post as I have removed the offending post you quoted

I had to read it more than once - it was only in the pop-out window on the side (something I guess Henry & Sift will be dealing with in their upcoming improvements for the UKBF of 2013...) - and at first I thought I might have made an offending post, but on closer reading I guess I quoted an offensive post and my post was deleted as it would have been out of context otherwise.

Personally, I couldn't care less, and would not have noticed either way if my post was deleted. I do know though that some people on here complain about not getting notified at all, so I wanted to acknowledge the anonymous mod that alerted me. If with was an automatic post, I guess the mods have to thank Sift, but far too late for that (I briefly attempted to moderate on here before the changes that are yet to come a couple of years ago, and it's not always easy, but can be time-consuming), but if a manual comment, I want to acknowledge whoever it was: far too many will complain that the mods never acknowledge a deletion; I didn't care to receive it, wouldn't be bothered by the decisions of the moderating team, and they can delete this too if they care, but I will observe they did send a notification, and while they might miss a lot of junk these days, they still do a great, unappreciated, and most importantly, unrewarded job for these forums.

Reason: deleted your post as I have removed the offending post you quoted

Thanks & a Merry Christmas & all that stuff to the great mods of this forum that will be working over the New Year when the Sift staff won't be!

I agree with most of what you have said.

However, there should be consistency for which comments or posts mod's find "offensive" and should be deleted.

More often than not, it's down to a mod's "belief" which may influence the decision.

Of course there should be Ron, and if people object to anything being deleted I would hope the collective administrators, not the individual mod, can take a view - as I recall happened in the brief time I shared their access to exclusive sections of these forums.

Just as no two employers can be alike though, and therefore no employment tribunal is able to rule against an employer because they would have done things differently, we have to allow for individual opinion here, for a mod to exercise their "belief". [I'm an atheist though, and was agnostic to the vague, meaningless rules of this forum when I did moderate - just deleted junk, and contributed to considerations where I was independent-minded.]

I would neither believe, nor hope, that you suggest every decision of a moderator goes to committee Ron!

This was not meant in a religious context, rather siding with one poster's point of view over another.

This is always the biggest problem, but we sometimes have to accept their silly views, or not use their forum.

Edit: And it was never taken in a religious context Ron.

You've hit the nail on the head and that's precisely my point.

The mods shouldn't side with one point of view over another.

If a post is rude, offensive, or borders on defamation, then the mods should act.

Have a nice Christmas! (Even if you are a "non believer";))

I have no idea to which thread / posts you are referring as I probably didn't read it but the role of the moderator is to ensure that the forum's rules are kept and not to moderate arguments and mods shouldn't be getting involved in any argument that doesn't break the rules whether they disagree with the points being argued or not

The post(s) were removed by me and it wasn't an offensive post but a link drop, rather than let a thread go off target I removed the offending post and the replies to that post, it keeps the thread on topic.

We do try and notify everyone when a post is removed and the forum software does make this easy, but sometimes we can't send notifications as if we use certain tools (to remove loads of spam in one hit) then we lose the facility to notify members. The notifications on here are pretty poor though and most members miss then when we do send them :)
