I personally dont think iPhones and iPads are that innovative. I think they are very, very well designed and manufactured, just not innovative. Every iPhone and iPad is just a slightly tweaked revision of the one before. I can understand the need for better screens, better processors and memory but some of the things they market as being new are just daft (1mm thinner, 10mm bigger screen etc).
I also think they hold technology back because they hold off releasing features so they can put them in future releases. Take v1 and v2 of the iPhone, both had still cameras but no video camera while everyone else did. Come v3 when they did include a video camera it was almost like Apple was claiming to have been the first to do it, where in fact they were the last at the time. Apple customers lapped it up at the time (I was one of them).
There were lots of tech tare downs of v1 and v2 that suggested a video camera function could have been included by replacing a few components costing just pennies more. Did they hold it back just so they could have an upgrade path?

No doubt about it, they have totally nailed the marketing. However I do think the tide is turning.
People are starting to realise it is not a new model at all it is just an upgrade. The press conferences are getting less and less coverage. It used to be that you had to follow an Apple launch event, even if you didnt want to, because everyone was facebooking every word Jobs said. That doesnt happen any more.
Is that because we are drawing to end what we can do with phones? Apart from more raw power it is hard to think of any new toys that can be usefully built in to a phone.

I've never considered myself an apple fanboy (Can't quite believe I've just typed that out {shudder}, what an awful term) but I've always had an iphone.
Not because I bought into the hype, more out of laziness than anything else. I'd had an iPod and liked the way they looked and felt and liked the way they worked.
I never opted for a smartphone until my contract expired roundabout the time the 4 was released. I was impressed with how sturdy it seemed to look, coupled in with the fact I was familiar with the OS, so I decided to get one.
I loved it to be honest. That was always going to be the way with it being my first smart phone. The things you could do just completely blew me away. It was a phone, it was an iPod, it was a very good camera, it was a web browser, it was a games machine. It was impossible to ever be bored with an iPhone...... Well unless the battery ran out.
I'm now onto an iPhone 5. Again, I love the way it looks, it feels sturdy, it still does everything I need it to do and I can't think of anything major that it doesn't do (within reason of course - I'd love it if it spat out my very own Kate Upton and a winning lotto ticket but I don't think technology is quite there yet) but now I'm starting to get narked with the rubbish charger, seemingly short battery life, iTunes being a right pain in the ar*se and now I think it's about time for a change.
Youd think, being a Sunderland fan, I'd be happy to stick by something that plods along - always slightly lagging behind the rest - but, I'm 28 now, maybe it's time to find a phone for grown ups.
The only way I could consider staying is if the solar charging rumours are true. Given the source of the rumours and the tech needed I'm not holding my breath.

I am an Iphone 4S user and why would i upgrade to a phone that looks exactly the same Iphone 5, 6 and so on will just be the same phone, you would think they could at least change the design!
Don't really see what the fuss is about, but i am not a tech or phone whizz so as long as the phone works and it mostly does i am happy enough

We have been dealing with iPhones for a while now and the 5 was a big improvement to the 4 which had many technical and hardware problems. I just hope the 6 is easier to fix! I also think at some point apple will have to open up their software a bit more to 3rd parties or go the same way that Microsoft went with windows...

I think Apple with its iPhone is slowly shifting in the same segment as BlackBerry, playing the catch up game rather than leading by being innovative. They're losing their market share pretty quickly to various Android-based OS smartphone manufacturers.
However I must say there's no company like Apple when it comes to marketing their products. Just look at their current iPhone5S ad, they've made it very appealing by using various apps. It attracts people and brings a wow factor.
With regards to blogs I just don't get it, why people are so obsessed about the next model of an iPhone. I sometime wonder if some of these bloggers are paid directly or indirectly by Apple to build up the hype.

High end smartphones is now a saturated market, what can one do that another can't? Certainly for business-oriented tasks they all do everything! I think Apple hype is for the sake of apple hype, sort of a learned behaviour.
Personally I have an htc one; it completes all i ask of it with aplomb and i shall probably keep it until it breaks or i lose it.

It's all about the OS's now, the hardware is so alike the only differences i see manufacturers advertise are something app related. (i.e. the last iPhone advert I saw was focused on it's in built sporting applications).
IMO (as an app designer who's worked with the following platforms):
Android - Can do most things the others can't due it it's open source and chosen scripting language.
iOS - Offers much simpler interface and richer more governed app store.
Windows - Offers even simpler/easy to use interface, but right now not much else.
BB6 - Absolutely shockingly rubbish in terms of future usability.
BB10 - Runs in a similar fashion to Android, but i think it's all too little too late to keep up with everyone else now.

A few years back I would have got a little excited at a new iphone being released, now a days it is just the exact same phone with a few tiny changes or colours introduced into the range. I do like iphones, their OS & functionalities over all other mobiles however I do think people have started to look for similar/cheaper alternatives. The iPhone isn't the cheapest and for what you get, I don't blame some people looking elsewhere - the battery life is fairly poor, chargers aren't very reliable etc...

Apple is not always innovative. What they do deliver is high quality products where the bridge between hardware and software is extremely good.
One thing which is essential with any phone you decide to buy is 'will it last 24 months'. Cause that is your contract lock in.
Since the day of the first iphone (which I still have somewhere, and it still works) they have proven to take an absolute battering, a wash in the washing machine (twice, thanks to the misses), bumps, bruises and high usage. Not sure that can always be said of some of the other offerings.
Im not saying Apple or better, and you pay for the privilege, but there is way more to something than its features.
Also, on a price point, dont forget the end of life price. Mazuma just brought my old, 8gb iphone 4 from us for £80.....

I had an iPhone 3GS, as that was the first iPhone that was worth having, for me. The other phones at the time just weren't as good, even if they advertised more 'features'.
I now have a Google Nexus 5 which I do love, but I do think if Apple release a bigger screen version of the iPhone, I might switch back.
My Dad got a Moto G, which is good, but he doesn't like it compared to using his old iPhone 3GS. For him, it just isn't intuitive enough and I do agree. I'm technical, so I like some of the things you can do on Android that you can't on an iPhone, but that doesn't make it a better phone, just a better phone for me right now.
As for Apple only doing small upgrades every year, well that's true. It's also true of Samsung, HTC, LG and everyone else. It's also true of most electronics and computers. I like the fact that Apple has a minimal catalogue though, if you look at someone like Sony, they have far too many phones to chose from and nothing really to differentiate them apart from high end v low end.
Just get what works for you and don't listen to the sales guy in the phone shop who will want to sell you what he's getting the best commission on that week!

Apple iDevices(iPhone, iPad, iPod) are not very innovative, I agree. Maybe you remember how terrible and expensive touch phones used to be before iPhone was introduced in 2007, Apple just did a good job on an idea which everyone else was mishandling. First iPhone sell really well although it didn't have Bluetooth!
Secondly, not everyone is tech savvy and comfortable with Android phones. iPhone makes it easy, that's why a lot of people like it.
Although I strongly believe, selling a kidney for iPhone 6 is insanity

I dread to think how much apple fan boys waste a year on this stuff.
I had an apple Iphone, can't remember which one. I had a high opinion of it, bar the fact the design felt weak, easy to damage, and how scratchable the cases were, most probably designed to be like that so they can make more money, but my model was laggy and often froze.
Compared to most phones iphones have more interesting screens and more apps available (it looks like that) so i can see why people want them.
But i would never be the sort of person to buy the new version every year. When i next buy a new smart phone i'll want at least 3 years out of it before i scrap it.
I think it used to be possible to update old iphone software to the new one, not sure whether they have found a way to stop that. That could be a good idea for people wanting to keep up to date but don't want to shell out on a new model.

With the deals you can get on sims i also think contracts are a waste of money. I think these days contracts appeal to people who can't afford to pay 400 or 500 to get the all singing all dancing stuff that every one wants so they can be a show off.
I have had second hand pones in the past and got stung on a motorolla that i paid £205 for, i couldn't hear people very well on it. I think there's too much risk with second hand.

My biggest problem is the cost, I can't stomach £450+ of technology sat in my pocket, when something similar will do the same job for less than half the cost - Google Nexus for example. I was a big fan of the original iphone with the rounded back (3G?), The later models seem to be more form over function! And don't get me started on the way people parade around with the bloody things held out in front of them at eye level as though its some kind of treasure , what's that about?

I personally won't buy another iphone as I think for the cost for what you get there are better options and I don't rate the app store any better than the android one and not a brand junkie either.

Everyone has been talking about the new samsung galaxy, but my vote still goes to the sony xperia, think I'm going to pick one of them up in the next few weeks.

Have to say I'm not swayed with the absolute latest stuff. I had a Nexus 4 and currently using a battered old plain iPhone 5. That said did take a look at the 6 over the weekend and it is seriously impressive.
It is nothing like a 4/4s/5/5s at all. Completely new design and is pretty damn slick. The 6 plus seems way too big to me, would settle for 6.
That said I only do 4 things on my phone:
1. Make calls
2. Do the odd text
3. Play chess with friends
4. Use maps sometimes to look things up or find out stuff near me
