Golden Wonder...what went wrong?

Pepsi came along with a HUGE advertising budget and set up a amazing sales operation targeting the independents then the chains.

Two crisps were walking down the road, a driver pulls in and says "Do you two want a lift", one of the crisps replies "No thanks mate, we're Walkers" . :D

I read that Walkers took a huge slice of the crisps market when they pushed through a massive ad campaign in the early 90s recession when everyone else (including Golden Wonder and Smith's Crisps) were cutting costs and ad budgets. Walkers were the only crisps being advertised and with no competition they came out of the recession really strongly. A lesson to other businesses who always cut advertising first when things get difficult - bad idea. When there's less noise it's easier to be heard.

Golden Wonder got bought over a few years ago by my favourite crisp company of all time (a company that most of you will never have heard of). They were bought over by a company called Tayto from Northern Ireland (not to be confused with another company called Tayto from the Rep. Ireland)

You are right the Golden Wonder brand isn't about much these days but I recall seeing some Golden Wonder ripoffs of Pot Noodle in Tesco a while back.

popunder is right, the last thing that should be cut in a recession is the marketing( and training) budgets.

Walkers were also helped by having a superior product.

When did KP crisps pack it in?

Walkers are the best crisps I think. All these thicker crisps, kettle chips, Mccoys etc do not taste as good to me.

Not sure about crisps but KP still make Hula Hoops

........ ..apart from the lack of choice in the Crisps arena.

I STILL buy the wrong flavour to this day - Walkers decided it would be "amusing" to swap the packet colours for S & Vinegar /C & Onion that Golden Wonder had used.

maybe they had to.....but it's Just continually annoying.

Grrrrrrrrr

Golden Wonder are way tastier than Walkers, plus their golden and flakey to Walkers white glass shards. I miss Cheese Straws and Burtons Cheese & Tomatoe Puffs.

Funny this thread should pop up, I was in a garage in Telford on Thursday and saw some Golden Wonder crisps for the first time in years, they were always the best, especially the salt and vinegar.
