don't think anyone rings a number not having any idea who they might be dealing with. Are you saying you think people ring you straight off the PPC ad without visiting the site?

They will have a list of results so if one sites info isn't smacking them in the face they will click off and onto next site in the list. Average time spent on any site is 2 seconds.

You need to have VERY clear info.

Meanwhile for a company like yours you should be able to get to page 1 of Google free for local searches. Read my info here re how to do this:

(article I wrote from my own site)

"How To Generate New Business With Free Ads On The Internet by Leah G

Today, more and more consumers search for services in their local area via the Internet and if you don't have an Internet presence they won't know you exist.

The Good News is that you can advertise on the Internet for FREE
There are tons of great classified Ad directories on the Internet that you can place a free Ad.
Many allow website links, text, pictures and other details all completely free.

Here are my top places for placing Free Ads.

If you service clients in a small geographical area, with appropriate content
you can most likely get your FREE AD to the front page of Google.

You can do this for keyword phrases that cover your service and local area.
-----------------
Front Page of Google?

If you have a business that sells to local consumers then learning how to increase your chances of getting on Google's front page with a free ad might interest you as well as save you a fortune in advertising.

Small businesses who can benefit from this information include:
Retail shops, cleaners, gardeners, pet sitters, electricians, plumbers, car sales, taxi companies, hair salons and so on.

First, you need to:

1.Google the product or service that you offer followed by your location

2. See what's on the front page of Google.

Are there any classified business directories listed?

Are they showing you results for one service they have listed on their directory?
Do they offer free ads on their directory?

3. Register with the top listed directories as per your search (try a few using different keyword phrases that you know are popular for your product/service)
Important!

In your Ad title - no point listing your ambiguous business name that no one will be Googling. Instead write the name of the service and the location. Within your Ad include all keywords that Googlers might use and of course your business name can appear. Publish and let Google do the rest.

Ensure your website link is the first thing you add to your free ads content.
Join as many free sites as you can and add your link to as many sites as you can. This all increases your chances of a good result.

Try this for yourself."

I would have linked to this on my site but it's mixed in with a load of other articles which I have yet to sort out onto their own pages.

Just a little thing that has helped us... use testimonials as a good way of using locations and jobs that you do so things like Mrs Bloggs, happy with spotlights installed in Birmingham etc... they don't look spammy but its using words and places that people use for searching for trades.

Name your folders and photos in a careful way too :)

I would say they would still do a quick scan of the site, and if they don't feel confident they will just visit another competitor.

Lets face it, how long does it take these days to google a subject and scan a few sites? Seconds.

Interesting one though.

No just saying once people have clicked through to site,I was under the impression that they would take a speed read of the landing page...Then go to contact page,And make the call...I am not saying our phone does not ring we convert maybe 10 % or slightly lower of clicks into paid work,Its not too bad and maybe when the websites are optimised will get higher,

yes I agree they would take a speed read of the page and on that basis would take into account what they are able to read plus the general feel, ambience of the site ie does it register positively in their subconcious..

1) gumtree ban your free ads eventually
2) free directory listing results only in sales calls from them
3) Viva Street is good
4) Free index is good
5) we are already ranked page 1.. 2nd or 3rd for emergency electricians birmingham

Thanks for your info though will study it all Thank-You.

your in a great organic rank for good keywords, i ran a ppc on the phrase birmingham electricians and i had 800 impressions, and that was the google search only,

So that tells me there is £ there  , like i say im only after rewires and big jobs so any jobs i dont want ill pass on to you,

You have to account with ppc for all the idiot salespeople who just click adds with no consideration.

what period of time was that over? hours, days, weeks etc...

Roughly 2 weeks,

But you have to account for the people that click onto page 2 which will make the add re appear, so that could take it down to maybe 200 individual people worst case, im not sure of the page 2 clickers percentage.

It cost me £50 to gather the data but its interesting,

It puts all those keyword research and market samuri to shame because they are way off the mark in actual figures.

doesnt reappear on page two though does it? 800 down to 200 is a huge difference - seems your just guessing why the figures are as they are:|. I would have thought if you have exact match and an impression rate, then its quite accurate:| Maybe wrong - happy to be corrected...

When someone types the keyword into google my add is displayed, if the user does not like the look of page 1 they scroll to page 2 or 3 or 4 and my add is displayed again,

I set the bid of the ad to be higher than the rest. I cant get 100% exact but i have a better idea than i did before.

ok maybe we have wires crossed, I've just typed keyword into Google and my ad is on page one but not on 2,3,4 - done that with 2 seperate ads. How come yours appear on page 2 as well as page 1 ?! I'm confused:|

You are incorrect Massey, your ad will not appear on page 2 of the same search if it appeared on page 1, for each search your ad is positioned 1-14 (or more), the only way it is triggered again is if you refresh the search. You haven't got ads set up for more than one domain have you? If you have, you're violating Google's double serving policy.

Morning people.

but so far this month our adwords campaign has converted over £2400, with a total spend of around £120.
That is a good result, is this to advertise your 360 virtual tours site.

i was bidding £2 a click maybe that had something to do with it
Thats why....have you researched/played around with this figure...£2 seems a little excessive for an emergency electrician.

It happens on other peoples ads to on the same search they appear on page 2 I wouldn't get 800 I pressions otherwise

It was for "Birmingham electrician" not emergency each click was about £1.80 I need to get adwords for dummies,

but I mainy just wanted to gauge the impressions level

Feedback:
Where you are in the organic listings for emergency electrician in birmingham is good, you cant ask for anymore...with local results you are there at the top too. So obviously you have no probs that side, but you need to put yourself into the consumers shoes who has the water leak or smoke bellowing out of the fuse box, Firstly Im running around like a blue arsed fly trying to find my mobile, then if I was to look on google for your said search term I see your site at the top and click into it.
The first thing I see is your header, 2 different phone numbers to go off, not too confusing for me but you have to think of a wider market and audience, especially older people.
If it was me and you are an Emergency electrician I would firstly make the header text more accessable to all
eg EMERGENCY CALL OUT 0800 234 234 thats it, no more is needed, like I say you are an emergency service in respect. so I would invest in an 0800 easily remembered number and have them divert to your landline then your mobile. or vice versa, remember that me as the consumer is running round with bucket/mops at present trying to stop the leak. And dont want to keep eyeing up and down to write the number in my phone.
Going back to your site and I think someone else has mentioned it small, white text on a black background...poor accessability, again very limited amount of sites get away with this colour combination ie gaming sites....they are going for the younger market, you are going for a wider range so keep the bgd white and a font of approx 12px, make it more accessable.
As for the backend of your site....Vista, spit, spit, spit sorry but hate these sites reason being, with no disrespect to yourself but they are very basic sites, and how they are made up is in my opinion very bad.
Firstly they dont use h tags correctly, with your site I would go with

<h1>My Company Name</h1>
<h2>Emergency Electrician in Birmingham</ br>
0800 234 234</h2>
etc etc in other words us your <h1,2,3,4,5,6> and <p>paragraph tags correctly.

Google does read from your h1 h2 tags

Table design.....get rid old hat and I am going to say it sorry, tables are for tabular data.

And I am guessing that it wont validate on w3

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...(detect+automatically)&doctype=Inline&group=0

Yep I was right good old vista sites
50errors 3 warnings.

Not that this matters a massive amount their is some debate exactly how much the search engines go off this information. I believe has problems reading the page...I may be corrected.

I could be here all day with Vista and I am sure many other people could too, can I also add you have done very well to get it where it is when your search for Emergency Electrician..even if it is a time issue, if you create the site to web standards I am 100% positive you will be on top spot for time to come.

Oh I would also ring and ask the question to the competition I think he is in 3rd place on local listing about how his 0800 number fairs up.

Page 2 as well as Page 1?

What search term?

Type birmiingham electrician and look tlat the ads, then go onto page 2 and you will see ads that appeared on page one reapear on page 2

which for that one user searching adds impressions to your ad,

are you sure your a ppc specialist mate :D

Chrislyons you are spot on vista are Coverd in valid errors,

do you think if I did link exchanges with some of the electricians sites my current poor rank page 3 will affect there rank?

As I am only after rewires and big commercial jobs I want to pass smaller jobs onto other respectable companies,

I'm hoping to have a week or so on major link building I just need to tidy the site I'm working on up a bit.

Hopefuly I will hit page 1

That doesn't happen for me and never has done. I've done exactly what you describe and cannot replicate the same issue you raise.

Ad Rank/Position is determined by Max Bid X Ad Quality Score

I can't see how Google would be able to place exactly the same ad in more than one position on any given search, the formula used to rank that ad can only result in one ad position.

There can be other ways round it but not ones that adhere to Google's policy.

nope, ads on the right are definitely different on pages 1 & 2 when i've just searched.

thanks for bringing this thread back up tho, some very useful info/advice being given!

Ive seen to many debates on link building excercises and I have my own opinions, which without opening a can of worms will keep to myself.
Obviously go for the links that matter to you but dont go over board with them. I would concentrate firstly on being happy with the site and make sure in the first instance it sits pretty, climbing the ladder takes time which I know you are fully aware, and I am a great believer in the content with clear relevant keywords and accessable to all approach, and once you have done this and still struggling to get to page 3/4 then start the more indepth approaches to get you higher.

If your site was mine I would
1, never index to google with <li><a href="#">Links</a></li>
nogo links especially to important pages
2, <alt> Alt text in <alt> tags, if the image is not clickable then leave the alt text out, people reading on text readers do not want to see text telling them that a lovely image of a fusebox was her....it has no relevance to them.
When its a link I always use "Clickable image link to wherever"
3, As I mentioned earlier correct use of h1,2,3,4,5,6 p tags
4,<p>&nbsp;</p> & <br/> cut down on the use of these, use .spacer
and define .spacer through css
5,What-Is-The-Earthing-System-Birmingham.html, lose the word Birmingham out of the page.
If you are offering general info make this so anyone who writes what is the earthing system see your page it doesnt really matter if their in timbucktoo, they are getting good solid content and google now sees that your page is quite popular for information.
6,Again my opinion over use of <ul><li>tags.

Is that enough to be going on with..

Me too I am struggling with your PPC ad's being displayed on any page

your site was showing as the 6th on page 1 for me (of the ppc ads - let's not confuse the issue!)

The balace on the account is low,

I've seen for myself previous my add appear top of the first couple of pages

which is the only way to explain the high figure of impressions

I don't think it's allowed to advertise yourself as a ltd company if you are not.
I would get some advice on whether having that domain is legal or not before doing too much work on it.

We are ltd, it's open to interpretation were Birmingham electricians and we are ltd that's enough for me ;-)

could you do me a favour when you get a minute mate, change the domain address on my listing to the new one ;) no rush :)

If you report someone who copies your content to Google they'll remove them from their searchengines (as will all the others) won't cost you a penny.

You're a lot more patient than me and I hope he appreciates that.

The slightly more costly route (price of a sols letter) is to charge him for using your content to the tune of several thousand pounds. My pal got stung for £6000 for just using someone elses 'picture'. He settled out of court else he'd have had to pay more. Copyright breach is not a CHEAP game.

I've seen the same on eBay.

I've also threatened people on eBay when they steal my pictures, same rules.

*note to self amend sig to include eBay queen*
