Any Shopify apps that actually help boost sales for a niche product like gemstones?

Hey everyone, I sell natural gemstones and crystal jewelry (Welo Opal, Amethyst, that kind of thing) on Shopify, and I'm trying to figure out if there's a tool out there that's actually made a difference for people in a similar niche.

Specifically looking at things like:
  • Upsell/cross-sell apps (someone buying one stone gets shown related ones)
  • Email/abandoned cart recovery tools that actually convert
  • Anything for showing "X people viewed this" or urgency/social proof without looking spammy
  • SEO or product page optimization apps built for Shopify specifically
Has anyone here used something that genuinely moved the needle on sales, not just added clutter to the store? Would love to hear real experiences before I go download five different apps and slow my site down for nothing.

I sell in a different niche, but I'd avoid loading your store with loads of apps. I did that at one point and it just made everything slower without really improving sales. For something like gemstones, related product recommendations make the most sense. If someone's looking at a Welo Opal, showing a few similar opals or matching jewellery feels natural and I've seen that work better than pop-ups or fake urgency.

That actually makes a lot of sense, thanks for sharing. I think I was overcomplicating it by looking for a "smart" app to do the recommending for me, when honestly manually curating a few related pieces per product page would probably convert better anyway, especially for something as visual as gemstones.

Quick follow-up — when you say showing similar stones/matching jewelry works, are you doing that manually on each product page, or is there a lightweight app you use just for that part (without all the extra bloat)? I don't mind hand-picking related items if it means I skip a heavy app altogether.

For context, here's roughly the kind of product I'm trying to cross-sell around: Ethiopian Opal Collection (armoniagems.com)— so something like showing 2-3 similar opal pieces or a matching bracelet/necklace combo under each listing. Curious if that's close to what worked for you.

As always with anything online you won't know until you try.

Upselling may work, grouping products may work. SEO might help but SMM may be more effective. You could experiment with different layouts, description, images and so on and see if this helps. You could investigate categorisation. You could review your products range.

I could even be Shopify is the problem.

There are two simple things that all ecommerce operators should focus on:
  • Getting people to your site
  • Getting them to buy
Too many people lose sight of these basics and try too hard and try lots of tricks to convert when a simple, understandable and focused offer would do.

Hi,

I agree with the comments above, fewer extensions will keep your Shopify store running smoothly.

We had a quick look at your SEO, and it’s actually in a strong place already. A few small tweaks would help, but the bigger opportunity is driving more traffic back to the site.

Your products are perfect for social media. Gemstones and jewellery perform incredibly well on visual platforms, and they can be a powerful driver of web traffic. However, your current posting rate and follower numbers are low. I’d recommend choosing one or two platforms and posting consistently with content that highlights your gemstones and craftsmanship.

On abandoned carts: since you already send newsletters, if your email tool integrates with Shopify you should be able to set up automated cart‑recovery emails without adding more apps.
