And when Facebook decides to clamp down on this you will be in a good position.

Facebook'a algorithms will in a millisecond be able to see the same information you have given us (and MUCH more). They will know that they are not 'real' fans at all.

We have been working on getting this issue sorted. All the trials we did were pretty much successful. As i explained in pm the reason why this could be happening with fans who are not actually single parents. This we would simply have made up with more fans. As for non-uk, This simply SHOULD NOT have happened and is hopefully now fixed. I can only apologise for this happening and if you would rather have a FULL refund this will be issued straight away. As i have said we are working to sort this.

If you're simply looking for numbers then fine, if you want to use FB to build a community (which we have been doing), then I'd stick to the well worn (and slightly laboursome) path of interacting with similar communities.

A genuine question, could this actually have a detrimental effect on your business if people see you have "fans" that obviously don't have any interest in what you do. I'm thinking of loss of credibility as it would almost look like you have paid people to like your page!

As already explained in this thread mate. That page is a trial for the zencart on facebook and has had no fan work done on it at all.

I would not think it could have a detrimental effect as users only see a number.
If the Business page owner was not updating on a regular basis then this is more likely to have the detrimental effect

How is a webpage that is actually selling items a trial? You are apparently retailing from this page, even if it is trial why wouldn't you do any "fan work" to make the trial more productive and conclusive, especially as it's so easy to do with your scheme?

The website is selling items. The facebook page is not as yet as it still needs finished and some more work done it

I have explained this before (all IMO)

I am a facebook [app] developer and can see the amount of data they have available for each profile.

Because of the nature of the 'profile' and the way the data is largely binary (i.e they either like something or don't) and because of the way everything is connected (a.k.a "The Social Graph"), it is VERY easy to spot large-scale abuse.

I reckon even I could right a basic algorithm!

Sooner or late Facebook will take action.

Unless of course the Page owner uses the a facebook social plug in widget on their web site, which actually shows the people who like the page. We do this on our blog and it shows a random selection of our fans. Great for our current fan base - they're predominantly middle aged, middle class with kids, our target audience. Of the "new" fans however, I've had to delete one today who had a porn style picture as their profile, others simply don't fit. Paypal Latino or Lettings Mall also stand out a little from the crowd..

So this would suggest the people on bargainmania's network are in no way vetted, now that would be a worry, you could end up paying for 10,000 paedophile fans!!

Unfortunately one of the networks that we are involved in has allowed some new websites through that have mucked up the system. This is being worked on right now and i am assured that all will be back to normal in a few days.
This only effects our targeted fanbase and everyone that it effects has obviously been offered a full refund.

Some have taken the full refund and some are waiting a few days to see what has happened.

Until this is sorted we obviously will not be offering targeted fans for anyone

Google algorithms are open to large scale abuse and they have the same tech as facebook if not better. So what makes you think facebook will spot algorithm abuse.

It's not logical. Its like the seo white hatters that say "one day the black and grey hatters will come unstuck" in the mean time the grey and black hatters are making a financial killing...

Simply because the potential abusers are WITHIN the Facebook network as opposed to EXTERNAL to the Google network.

Bargainmedia is working on it, never say never. In all fairness, some people are happy to buy numbers to get started, a page with only 20 fans looks a bit of a wilderness, add 500 to that and it starts to have more credibility and can be a platform on which the page owner can build their own community.

How on earth do people cope with lots of fans?

I've been playing about a bit more with facebook this week and even with just my few likes it is time consuming to interact with people.
It would be a full time job to run it properly.

exactly..the larger organisations place Social Media within the Marketing Department and have 2/3 or even 4 people maintaining a presence on Facebook and Twitter, reacting to information and customer enquiries. Then you will see it working..but it takes a whole heap of effort to get it going. Results are not immediate.

Yes, fortunately I just treat it as a hobby so it's not like work.
Wouldn't like to have to pay someone to do it though.

UKSBD - I also do this, just posting a facebook update every hour or so - of new products, competitions, products we have in stock - I do see traffic from it but its taking time to get facebook fans or twitter followers.
My facebook posts also go to twitter as i have linked the 2 which makes it abit easier.

Set it up right, use the blog and it integrates with twitter and facebook.

No i post on facebook - Its simple on facebook - Go to link to other social media and it will log you into twitter then click to confirm
