Educational Background for Seo

in search engine optimisation all the practical is derived from theory

...

in this respect if you dont have a solid background in the theory your practical is very limited to ideas you are going to get from the web

fz04, you have a total misunderstanding of practical / theory / learning...

chicken and egg - you are claiming that the practical can only come after the theory... nonsense ;) where do you think that the theory comes from?

if practical always came only from the theory, then Google would (with all their PhD bods) have developed the perfect theory and then implemented it. The fact that they keep tweaking it / developing it clearly shows that this is not the case.

The simple reality is that theory comes from practical as much as practical comes from theory - if you are familiar with rapid development models then you will understand the approach (v. the waterfall methodology).

And that is how SEO works in real life - those experienced practitioners on here and else-where will have theoretical knowledge, but it is continually refined by testing / implementing / observing / analysing - adapting the theory, back to testing / etc. - i.e. in and out of practical and theory...

anyone who goes into the SEO industry on a theoretical basis will be useless until they have actually done some SEO and seen the results and then re-learned their theory ;)

and just to qualify - I am a qualified teacher and do a lot of teaching in a number of fields - what I have posted above is known and accepted across education / research / training / etc. no-one would train as a teacher and know the theory and go straight into their first job without any practical experience... however people do go and get hands on learning - classroom based, augmented with theory, but strongly locked into practical experience and this is how teacher training is developing - practice is considered far more important than theory.

my experience in the IT industry (which is considerable) also demonstrates very clearly that the most competent designers / coders / project managers / SEO bods / etc. are those who learn by doing it (yes, they will read and absorb theory as well), and continue to do so through their careers... those with theoretical knowledge only soon get it knocked out of them by the reality of business ;)

you would only trust a qualified certified accountant to do your tax return, their practical experience is directly derived from their theoretical study

nonsense ;) the reason I use my accountant is that he puts more time into keeping up to date with the law (I don't have the time), and he has more experience of business accountancy than I do, by acting across a range of businesses - which brings a breadth of experience into my business...

I have no accountancy training, but am quite capable of running the book-keeping / doing a VAT return / end of year company accounts / P&L / etc. etc.

Similarly I have no legal training but did my own legals for a business I ran with major VC investment into it - and ran rings around their lawyers including finding some major legal flaws in their work...

i dont work in seo for a living

I would suggest that perhaps you need some experience before you start telling everyone else how it is done!

i write the threads/posts because i see alot of website design companies and seo companies on here who i think are short changing customers

There are undoubtedly cowboys on this forum as elsewhere - but I would be very cautious about making comments like this - you have no idea of the relationships / work done by those companies or the results gained for their clients...

Once again you are making theoretical assumptions without basing them into the practical reality of life.

Please do not confuse theoretical learning and practical ability - sorry, you are totally wrong - in fact your theory is clearly itself not based in the practicality of real life - once you understand that then it will make sense!

You need to pull yourself out of the belief that theory is all and go and get some practice - then you will have a far more balanced and realistic view on life!

firstly i have practical experience in seo

i did an seo project for someone using the main keywords in a very competitive industry and i have got the website to number one position in google

and to be honest it was quite easy, and the reason it was easy was because of my academic background

i dont know what you think practical experience means in seo but to make a few links, spin some content, maybe optimise a website, anybody can do that in a day from readng the idiots guide to seo and then maybe wait a few weeks for results

and when it comes to accountants, there is a reason you are charged £50 by someone just calling themselves an accountant(which anyone can do) and £250 from someone calling themselves a chartered accountant which involves a long period of study

this discussion can go on forever..

Haha, what a lot of nonsense.

Unless by "academic background" you mean an ftp account for a university you work for, that would certainly make ranking for competitive terms easy :)

That is good to hear - and yes, this discussion could go on a long time - because you don't seem to wish to listen to the combined wisdom of a number of very experienced people on here - fine, we all have our polemic views ;) however the reason I posted initially is because you keep starting threads making exactly the same point - that theory / academic background is all - and practical experience doesn't count!

No problem had you made the point once - interesting discussion - but to have people respond and then to keep posting the same perspective wrapped in slightly different wording could be seen as spam :D - it is definitely boring to see the same, unproven, theory being wheeled out again and again in a short period of time - it is in effect a slap down for the responses you receive as it shows that you are posting it to make a point, not to have a discussion - you obviously have no interest in reasoned logic or argument as you receive that and then just repost the same point...

or maybe you see it as an exercise in SEO spinning of content ?! :D :D :D

and if you think that your above example is all there is to practical SEO I think that you have just demonstrated the proof of my arguments - thank you...

as you are so determined that academic background (and you seem to imply in your threads that no-one else has one - or an equivalent one - you might just be surprised!) is the most important aspect to SEO I give you a simple challenge (simple to one of your academic status!):

prove to its absolute conclusion the following hypothesis:
That a person with an academic background {insert any def. of that background you like here} will be better at SEO than any one else - regardless of that other person's experience, knowledge and ability.

with your academic background you will of course be familiar with the need to prover your hypothesis... and you seem so convinced regarding this hypothesis that you should have no difficulty at all in proving it.

As for level of proof - I would like to see it in the form of a paper published in at least one reputable academic journal - a journal recognised by academia internationally; or if not published - at least in a form which could be published in such a journal. I (and no doubt many others) are very familiar with this process, I also have access to a number of university professors who will no doubt be happy to evaluate your proofs...

Of course, if you are not able to do that then we must consider the hypothesis unproven... which might just mean that we would take a view that practical experience is really rather useful after all.

looking forward to it

no i dont think so

by academic background i mean having studied all the underlying theory which underpins the www

such as:

data structures and algorithms

java programming object orientated model

networking, using the osi model and looking at how data is transferred in frames, error correction etc as well as understanding the advanatages of the numerous network topologies used in computing today

studying packet switching with routers and how the algorithms are implemented

user usability of gui's

databases

software development

quite simply go to googles website and look at who they are recruiting for jobs in search engine related work and what qualifications they require

these people will then be implementing code for google its all technical stuff and the practicalities will be on the lines of dont use a certain data call because it will overflow a stack etc

now someone with a similar academic background to googles programmers will obviously be light years ahead of tom dick and harry who are just browsing articles sniffing at what "google" requires and then practically implementing what the articles say

whereas the academic can see what the code is doing, he/she can then do things others would just not be able to understand

mmm most intrigued... hate to move from theory to reality for a moment, but perhaps you could (when you have finished my earlier challenge!) just demonstrate to us all:

how the packet switching routine on a router makes any difference to whether the content on my site is relevant or not to a particular search query...

ahhh Fred - you need a new car - www.buyanewcar.com looks good
no Bob, was going to look there, but my router packet switched and I suddenly found myself on the down line heading straight for www.howtocareforsmallpets.com - must be good I thought - these search engines analyse everything, so I bought myself a hamster wheel and roll off into work each day

One factor I couldn't help noticing with this conversation / arguement is the lack of focus on doing seo from the customers perspective. Its easily as important in my mind as anything else here.

As for education vs experience, only the experienced will have an understanding of what both the client wants and what the customer expects. Education is by definition a process part of experience. The more experience we gain so our education expands. Its part and parcel.

Education on its own is useless, without the skills to target them. Education alone will not tell you how a customer is likely to think or react.

Have you ever heard the expression " a little knowledge is dangerous".?

Cause if your theory was true ,one suspects you may well have been sitting on a very warm island somewhere ,and not spouting off on a business forum.;)

The keyword please or better still the site you claim to have worked on as in SEO the proof is invariably in the pudding.:p

Failing this one can only assume one may well be full of BS,a common occurrence amongst graduates.:)

whereas the academic can see what the code is doing, he/she can then do things others would just not be able to understand

aha - the fundamental flaw in your logic (if logic it is Jim!)

you believe (incredibly) that you have to have a degree in computer science to understand this... your demonstrable lack of understanding of this whole discussion shows that you might possibly be wrong ;)

there are plenty of folks on here who would have a crystal clear understanding of the underlying technology and algorithms, but might not have a piece of paper to throw darts at - your belief that without a piece of paper people would just not be able to understand is arrogant and simply wrong...

anyway - you haven't answered my challenge yet - if you can, I will switch to your way of thinking - if you can't, as I suspect by the fact that you have no evidence / logic / argument to back up your statements, then sorry - you need to reconsider your stance...

the simple fact is that there are people on this forum, and elsewhere, who undoubtedly have greater: qualifications / IQ / experience / ability / understanding / etc. etc. than you do - so setting yourself up with a theory which is impossible to prove, and simple to disprove just makes you look foolish... in many ways that is your own outlook - if that were to be the only consequence then no doubt no-one would bother responding - however, you make claims which are ludicrous, and it is important to counter them so that members who come on here to learn do not go away with a wrong idea...

at present there is a real danger that if anyone actaully believed your claim they would toddle off and buy in a bearded professor to analyse their company / market / compeition, interrogate the great Google to work out its logic and write a 20,000 word thesis on how to improve the company's position in the search engine rankings - no doubt fascinating, but a total waste of time - lets see an accurate and balanced view here - for those reading - get in companies who can demonstrate what they have done, and explain logically what they will do, and then over time show you what they are doing - simple - no need to worry about bits of paper!

Steve

its not car insurance

and ive looked at the adword prices for the keywords and for the views

i would say the position is worth about £50 000/year

and with over 400 companies in the same city all on search i would say its not bad

my point is someone with an academic background related to seo and who then works in seo will be better then someone who doesnt have that background which is just common sense

ive learnt alot of stuff myself which i didnt know from these forums

and as alot of you guys are earning a living from this work your clients are your best judges

so please dont take what i say personal as i have picked up alot of stuff on this forum about seo myself

if your good at seo you will know it regardless and if you are not happy with my posts you are taking them personal for no reason at all so just ignore

and if you think the posts are total bs why even reply to them??? again just ignore

ive seen seo/web desgin companies who i think are total cowboys but ive not named anyone and ive seen some whos work is very good

my views are just my 2 cent worth and nothing else

Fz04,

I don’t know much about SEO, but I know many people on here that do (you haven't convinced me you are among that class). Regardless of the field though, these people that have a certificate & nothing more but think they're some sort of elite class do irritate me.

What I do know is that the basis for many of your arguments is absolute nonsense, and that includes the need for an education/theoretical background to do anything.

you would only trust a qualified certified accountant to do your tax return, their practical experience is directly derived from their theoretical study
Taking that analogy, I find it odd that a fair few people (even some from this forum) trust me to assist them in employment law matters. When the theoretical study was scheduled I was bunking off, but my practical experience is derived from twenty years of practical experience defending employees as a trade union rep - I learnt a lot more than theory in that time.

and when it comes to accountants, there is a reason you are charged £50 by someone just calling themselves an accountant(which anyone can do) and £250 from someone calling themselves a chartered accountant which involves a long period of study

There is a reason why I charge £150 (or no fee when advice is provided on a forum) instead of £250 or £350: I'm worth it, but I still like getting good value, and I like to give it too; nothing to do with calling myself anything I'm not though: I don’t call myself a lawyer, a solicitor, a barrister, or suggest I have a BA Hons/etc. from many years ago, and having left school at 15 with no qualifications, I wouldn’t try to either. I do give a good service though, rather than those solicitors I’ve encountered that don’t even know what the laws are at a given time.

it would be interesting to know what education background many of you have to work in seo
While there are one or two potential clients that were more interested with a certificate to my knowledge & experience in law, most people still trust me... because I know what I’m talking about! And bar some practical training with the TUC, all my legal knowledge is derived from practical experience. You can demonstrate an ability to learn, but the SEOs on here can demonstrate an ability to get a site up the rankings; practical experience is far more useful than theory.

Not easy to ignore considering what you posted here....

ask for educational qualifications

you wouldnt trust an unqualified accountant without a legal qualification to do your taxes as anyone can actually call themselves an "accountant"

dont trust any seo company who doesnt have a minimum of a BA Hons/BSC in Computer Science or a computer related degree

There's a lot of misinformation on seo forums in general and to continually offer opinion that is not based on fact can be very harmful.

There are a number of very experienced and successful seo professionals on these forums, I have no idea how many of them have degrees in CS but some of the best seo's I know personally (none UKBF members) have no academic qualifications whatsoever.

TBH it is a complete minefield trying to secure yourself a decent seo company these days, undoubtably not helped by the huge amount of conflicting information that muddies the waters.

this comment here just shows why you could never be at par with any seo who has an academic background in computers

FZ04,

Your education will not make you better at seo than people who have been doing it for years or people with more money than you. All it will do is make you quicker on the uptake.

You could be brilliant at seo but if i have more money than you my website would always be above yours. A good 80% of seo is backlinks.

data structures and algorithms

None of that means anything to me :| i still get my websites to #1.

Guessing the city is Manchester (2nd biggest city in UK, I believe - so you might have done a smaller city) and assuming your #1 listing appears about the local listings (which it probably won't), then a #1 listing for "taxi manchester" would be worth around £4,000 a year.

If you show below the local listings, it might be worth around £800.

Come back when you've SEO'd for a competitive term. By then you may know what you're talking about.

Once again you boldly shoot yourself in the foot ;)

you seemed to have missed the comment I made above regarding the job the Google bods have... their job is to effectively train the bots to understand relevance - they are doing AI

that is a totally different thing from humans understanding relevance which is what an SEO has to do - so the two are totally no comparison...
