Chinese virus

Just been speaking to my Mum who is early 60s but has a long history of various lung problem.

The NHS in their infinite wisdom thought now was a good time to get her in to the hospital for a CT scan on some dental thing totally unrelated...

They've probably had lots of cancellations

I did see earlier a reason why one country were not reporting lots of infections. They have a couple of thousand of testing kits.

Perhaps differences in some countries is the people being tested. Not many places holding the kits, not many places will find infected people.

Test a few hundred people a day, you won't get a few thousand results a day.

I can't actually believe the Cheltenham races went ahead, 3 days of 70,000 people in close contact per day, what could go wrong.
4 days.

I do imagine numbers will be down though. I’ve been housebound today so haven’t seen how the race traffic is faring as I normally would.

Everyone that I know that usually goes is still going.

Ah, business as usual.
People won't let little things like a virus stop them. Even if they do infect a thousand others.

No matter what government does, people will find ways to screw things up.

Has anyone noticed that in China when it started, the deaths v infected was around 2%.

Italy it is over 6%
Based on official numbers released (global figures - infected against deaths against still being treated), the current mortality rate is 4.63%. Since 24 Feb this figure has fluctuated from 3.69 (lowest) to 4.63 (highest). The trajectory has been continuing in an upwards direction.

How many were there last year
There were 68,000 on day 1 last year and 66,600 in 2018 so numbers are down but they’ve held up better than I thought they would.

Each day last year was a record breaker so they would have been expecting similar this year I guess.

Interestingly, one of the local recruitment agencies were still looking for catering staff as recently as Saturday so people may have been put off working their this year.

Nadine Dorries (Health Minister) has just been reported to have the virus.

She has been in Parliament the past week including a reception at No.10 with Boris.

What will the fallout be?

Boris meets from time to time with the Queen. An elderly lady who is in an at risk age group.
Apart from that we can but hope.

Perhaps Nadine's sinister plan is to remove obstacles from her rightful destiny. Chairing Cobra meetings.

Major Banks deferring mortgage payments due to financial hardships people are likely to experience due to the current situation.

Yes, very nice.

Defer. Not forgive.

Say someone on £250 a week goes on sick pay for say 2 months - self quarantine 4 times this year for example - they lose about £1200.
Probably not getting any of that back. But some bills deferred.
So still need paying, at presumably higher payment once back at work. With probably no extra income to pay for it.

Deferred payments are not always a good thing for the person paying.

Not as generous as they like to make out, banks do not take any real action on missed mortgages for three months anyway, used to do debt collecting for years. If they suspend all charges etc fine, but if someone has no money not much they can do anyway.

But they do declare them as arrears on your credit report. 3 missed payments on your mortgage pretty much ruins any chance of a new mortgage at normal rates for 2-3 years minimum.

It appears (although no confirmation) this will be like a payment holiday with no arrears being reported.

Moldova has closed all nurseries, schools, colleges and universities for two weeks from today, with only 3 reported cases. Talk about being proactive.

3 reported cases. Maybe dozens not yet tested but infectious.
On to a good thing if they can slow the infection down a bit.

Though if anything like here closing places down won't stop kids congregating nor the uni students travelling by public transport back home.

Just read about israel, if you come in to the country you HAVE to go in to 2 weeks isolation regardless of where you have come from. If you can not prove you can do self isolation you are not allowed in.

That is what we should have done 2-3 weeks ago.

I flew back into Glasgow Airport on Sunday. No staff wearing face masks, no one asking where you have travelled to. Passengers going through the unmanned passports scanning machines.
Compare this to when I flew into New Delhi a few weeks ago. Every staff member including staff in the duty free shops. This was when India case of the virus were in single figures.

On my flight from New Delhi to Dubai, a passenger sitting a few rows in front started experiencing health and respiratory issues. He was attended to by staff. On disembarkation at Dubai, he was told a medical team was com ing aboard and he couldn't leave until they had cleared him. Of coarse he started to argue and told them he was leaving and they couldn't stop him. He was stopped and I don't know what happened next.
At Dubai airport check and face masks were in evidence though less than Delhi. A observation I made was that people of western origin appearance tended to be less likely to wear a mask.

Face masks are of no use in preventing the wearer getting the disease. They may prevent someone already infected from spreading it.

It seems Fedex and DHL are not helping - Airfreight charges seem to be increasing daily! An airfreight via fedex via Hong Kong was quoted at $862 - today it is $1450, and probably more tomorrow. Sea freight for the same item seems to be little changed. I double checked my end and DHL is virtually the same as Fedex. Gone mad! Especially as the factories seem to be ramping up again. I suspect the pile of goods awaiting shipment means the airfreight firms are rubbing their hands together.
