Chinese virus

It seems Fedex and DHL are not helping - Airfreight charges seem to be increasing daily! An airfreight via fedex via Hong Kong was quoted at $862 - today it is $1450, and probably more tomorrow. Sea freight for the same item seems to be little changed. I double checked my end and DHL is virtually the same as Fedex. Gone mad! Especially as the factories seem to be ramping up again. I suspect the pile of goods awaiting shipment means the airfreight firms are rubbing their hands together.
What's the product, carton weight and dimensions?

Is what not a good thing?

You said they may prevent the spread of the virus if the wearer is a carrier. A lot of people maybe unaware they have the virus.
So if everybody wore the masks it may prevent or slowdown the spread. Is that not a good thing.

No. Because wearing a mask increases your likelihood of getting the virus because it becomes damp with your breath and the virus can sit on the damp surface of the mask.

No, because they get damp and then become ideal places for viruses to hang out.

Am not a expert. But it seems the people on the frontline don't agree with your theory. They all seem to be wearing m

As opposed to breathing it straight in. Am not a expert but are you telling me , all the people on the frontline wearing masks are wrong.
Also am talking about a someone already carrying the virus unknowingly .If they had a mask on the virus may be stopped at the mask as opposed to the atmosphere or onto other surfaces.

I was at my local hospital A and E department on Saturday. Not a single health professional was wearing a mask.

Boris Johnson is not being tested for coronavirus, despite having attended an event with health minister Nadine Dorries who has the contagious disease, a Downing Street source has said, writes Rob Merrick.

Face masks are of no use in preventing the wearer getting the disease. They may prevent someone already infected from spreading it.

Will you touch your mouth with your hands while wearing a face mask?

Will you breathe in water droplets someone else has expelled into the air if the mask is good enough to catch the droplets?

If you want to avoid the virus entirely then wear a respirator - make sure its suitable size filter, not all respirators will be suitable for viral protection.

And when you take off the mask / respirator don't touch your mouth with your hands.

People in hospitals etc only wear them for a short time and then replace them...they also use the correct sort and know how to wear them properly. For the general public there is no reason to and as NewLodge said it can increase your chances of getting it.

I must say I don't get the hatred for masks - people say, the virus sits on the mask. But, if you weren't wearing the masks presumably it would be in your mouth? so, what do you want to have a reduced risk by wearing a mask or to be infected. Nothing is absolute - I don't think anyone wearing a masks genuinely believes that means they wont get sick. it just reduces the chances.

It also by implication also reduces contact with your face.

And ensure you replace it regulary, make sure you know how to wear it properly, ensure the seals are sealed

I think there are plenty of people who think they won't get sick wearing them - think you are very naive to think otherwise

You might not touch your mouth but people will touch the mask, then wear the mask each day - it's a great place for the virus to love being constaly warm and damp - in hopitals etc during surgery they are used only for a short while and then thrown.

Mostly the impact is morale.

Lots of people wearing masks then lots of people together can feel they are safer.
Still have to practice bio security to reduce risks - but nothing the public will do can stop the virus from entering the home or workplace.

I'm sure people also spray them with disinfectant as well though - lets not just openly criticise people trying to protect themselves by wearing masks. People have a right to be scared.

Why should we not point out to people that wearing the masks won't help? Giving proper advice is important when dealing with something like this - do you not think so?

They can be scared but that won't help them anymore than wearing the mask.

There's this thing some get taught as small children.

The Washing Of The Hands.

Can wash your hands once a day. Can wash them only very occasionally. Or can wash them multiple times a day.

Heck, there's even disposable filters for some masks and others made to be disposed of.

You believe wearing masks won't help.

Some people disagree with you.

As you say, giving proper advice is important.

Take whatever precautions you feel happy with. And hope you aren't part of the percentage who will become seriously ill or die.

There is but a lot of people will never change the filter or throw the old ones away. And they don't do anything to help anyway so why bother?

It's not a belief - not a religion about masks - backed up by what scientists are saying.

People can disagree.

Proper advice is important - which is why it's important people know that masks are not needed.

You should take the precautions that scientists recommend - those are the ones that work - does not matter if you personally are happy or not.

Perhaps others have better masks than you?
Perhaps some indeed will use them as they should be used.

Hey, people don't always wear seat belts - should we scrap all seat belts in cars because some won't wear them? And they don't do anything to help anyway?

Its your belief.
Don't mind if some other people have different beliefs. Including people who are medically trained.

No, Mr D - it's not a belief.

I have no masks so no one will have a better mask than me.

Your anaolgy with seat belts is very odd - seat belts have been proven to work.

If masks don't work why do scientists, surgeons, the NHS, dentists, veterinary surgeons etc all over the World spend millions of pounds on them every year?

maybe you should report your findings to them and help them cut costs.

Like I said further up they wear them for a short while when say doing a procedure and then they bin them. So that is why they spend millions - no need to do a report.

And they are usually worn for other reasons - not virus prevention

Has anyone heard the budget? Was there any announcement about helping businesses if we all have to close down for a few weeks ?

They wear them to avoid passing germs to their patients. They throw them away after every use and they use the type that is effective.

Medical experts have already said, numerous times, that wearing a mask does not help you avoid catching the virus.

The frontline staff dealing with Covid-19 patients wear multi-layer filtered masks and helmets with a face screen to help protect their eyes. and in China huge numbers of them still caught it.

Its the standard response in Japan. Its people with a cold that wear them so that they do not pass it on to others. They are not worn to prevent a cold.

I would imagine with the grounding of many flights around the world it's just a case of supply and demand with the airlines. more airfreight pilled up the more they charge just like everyone else. they still have all the grounded aircraft to pay for sitting around

you’re talking about surgical masks which definately wouldn’t stop the spread of a virus. However n95 masks and respirators do make a difference, it even says on the small print they are designed for biological hazards etc. The media say they don’t work so the public don’t hoard them and leave none for health workers.

I need info on this also, we are in hospitality and I’m starting to freak out a bit. No way can I afford to continue paying staff without trading, nor could I afford to pay multiple redundancy payments. I have no idea what to do tbh.

Looks like hospitality is getting a business rates holiday if your rateable value is less than £51k - its a start?

So notify the site they are wrong.

As for catching the illness - tired people don't mistakes where you live?
There's been ebola outbreaks where medical staff have been infected - whether through not following procedures, through damage to equipment, through poor handling of clothing etc. Filter fitted badly? Poor seal where seal is required?

Learn to avoid putting hands to your face at all and avoid all droplets and yes you in particular will not need a mask.
Those not learning to act the same way may find them handy.

Don't think anyone has suggested that viruses will be stopped by masks. That isn't their intended purpose.
