I know this is an old thread, but I called into one of these shops a few weeks ago for the first time as I had some old (mens) clothes I wanted rid off. They pointed out that they were only interested in good quality clothes which ruled my clothes out.

Looking at what was going on in the shop, it was clear that they were not just shoving the clothes in bin liners and selling them in bulk, but carefully sorting them out so that they could sell them in various ways. No doubt they will be selling the better items on ebay etc. among others and not just selling them in bulk to Eastern Europe.

Merchant UK

The price fetched by second-hand textiles fluctuates (in a similar way to other commodities such as oil, wheat and coffee). As at mid-2013, virgin clothes (see definition below) were fetching just over £1,000 per tonne. This was three times the price of seven years before.

This rise has caused an increase in the number of commercial collectors in the UK (including misleading and bogus 'charitable' collectors). It's also led to an increase in the theft of bags left out for house-to-house collections.

'Virgin clothes' means they're as-donated, unsorted. However, once they've been picked over by charity shops (and the best items removed), the remaining items fetch a lower price.

Charities - When the second-hand value of textiles rises, the effect on charities is mixed :

Charity shops earn more per tonne when they pass rejects on to recycling companies.
With collections, where a charity gets a royalty per tonne (or a fixed amount per month), the effect on the charity depends on the arrangement with the commercial partner (the collector) :
In some cases the charity gets more money to reflect the increased value.
Unfortunately, in other cases the charity still gets the same income - and the commercial partner keeps all the extra revenue.
There's an increase in the proportion of collection bags stolen, thus reducing revenue.

I am very interested of buying used clothes from UK and sell them on to Eastern Europe. How much would I expect to pay per kilo? And how good is the quality of these clothes?

Thank you,
Monique

Hi I'm looking for an exporter interested in clothes, we collect approx 3 to 4 tonnes per week. It all depends on what price is on offer.
Many regards

I am thinking about setting up my own cash for clothes business in the Midlands. My plan was to start small & flyer my local area (staffs) saying that I will collect clothes from people & weigh it at their homes & give them 50p per kilo. Once I start to get money I can then rent a little shop & an out of town container. All this I think sounds like a good plan. My only problem is I don't know what to do with the clothes once I get them. I really need a contact that I can then sell on to so they can be shipped to Easter europe. Can anybody help.

thanks

Hello

Yes I do . I have two avenues really.

The first is a cash for clothes business that I'm in the process of starting up which should be up and running very soon, so the price per kg would typically depend on the quantity , type and frequency . My research shows I will have to pay 50 p per kg to buy the clothes.
The second option is I have a factory, which would mean price per item or bundle
Please let me know your thoughts .

Thanks

We are buying around 1 tonne a month (unsorted) for 50p a kg, selling surplus for 30p kg.

We have been offered Grade A for 80p kg, but supplier is in London, so we are looking for a similar price closer to the North East.
