Importing clothing from India

Hello all,

Newbie here. I have a small online clothing business where I sell vintage/pre owned items. I mainly sell the classic outdoor brands such as Patagonia and north face, as well as new balance and Nike trainers. A bottle neck for me currently is sourcing enough stock to make meaningful growth. I currently purchase items individually and thus sourcing takes up a disproportionate amount of time.

I have been discouraged by the quality that I've seen available from UK wholesalers, and having recently taken a trip to India could see the potential in exporting wholesale from there.

Does anybody have any advice as to the best way to make contacts in India for this sort of thing?

TIA

exporting wholesale from there
They will have an excess of clothes for export? That's surprising!

The only way to really see if it will work is get on a plane and visit potential suppliers!

Hi,

We have some good connections in Sri Lanka that may be able to help with sourcing.

"India I can't speak to, but China I know inside out. Those brands you're selling — Patagonia, TNF, NB, Nike — there is genuine deadstock and overstock here, not fakes. But the problem is, fakes and 'mixed' stock get lumped together all the time, and it's not always easy to tell at first glance.

Also, proper brand deadstock often comes with the labels cut — neck tags, wash tags, that sort of thing. That usually means it's genuine, but the presentation takes a hit, so it's better for moving volume at lower prices. If you're after mint condition with all tags intact, that's a different price bracket and a different source altogether.

There are wholesalers who specialise in exactly this — outdoor and sportswear brand surplus — and they move bales of 100 to 500 pieces. It's messy, no two ways about it. But if you're willing to dig in and do your homework, genuine stock is out there."

From experience it can be very difficult if you dont have any contacts already in india that you trust. There are quite a few pitfalls into pricing etc. My dad has done a bit but thats because of family contacts over there (which to be honest arent any better XD) Unless you take some time out there to really vet the people you work with and have local people there that you know and trust there is always a risk to get ripped off. Mind you i dont know if there is a service offered for anyone that wants to do this sort of business in india and have a rep out there
