IMHO you should start out getting links on your main site. Use a second 'practice' site, until you're confident you know what you're doing.
Focus on submitting your articles to a site where your customers hang out - focus on getting prospects to visit your site rather than any SERPs benefit.
Note that you'll rarely get a link by asking. Think of yourself as a budding journalist, just out of journalism school wanting a job at the NY Times - it ain't gonna happen! You have to start out at a provincial paper, show off your stuff, while attempting to get the attention of a NY Times editor.
So you make contact with someone you want to publish your articles with by commenting on their blog (intelligent comments, of course - you want to impress them with your knowledge of the subject) or contacting them through their contact page. Don't try and drop a link initially. Once you've got their attention you could point them to an article on your site that relates to something they've published. Sometimes they'll post something on their blog with a link to your article without asking. Eventually, you might start offering an article to be posted as a guest author.
Long winded and time consuming - yes!
There's also myblogguest.com but understand that G may decide to penalise anyone using such directories at some point in the future.
There are plenty of UK Squidoo lenses, however I'm pretty sure any links are no-follow, so will have little effect on your SERPs position. They're also prone to being deleted without notice by the moderators, if they're considered 'too commercial'. You'll have to promote the lens within the Squidoo community, as the lenses don't do that well in the SERPs.
Making videos might be easier...

In place of submitting article on third party site, you should start blogging which will help to increase direct traffic as well as back links. Guest posting and forum commenting is also one of the best way to get quality back links but for that quality of those sites as well as possible to get dofollow link is required.
During link building, one most important thing keep in the mind is that in place of using optimized keyword rich anchor text make use of natural anchor text.

It would be quite the opposite to have a link swap as opposed to just external links because link swaps are being penalised by Google and other search engines. With backlinking also under continued pressure, having good content on your site is a must before developing a linking strategy.
I'd also advise against links in bios or footers at the bottom of an article.

Reciprocal links aren't being penalised.
Probably one of the most natural ways to link on the web. If you can get relevant links from suppliers, customers etc then it's well worth it.

Another thing you can do is to build relationships with people in your target market. E.g. if you're selling tech goods, get tech bloggers or websites to support you. Sponsor their competitions, send them free samples and get them to write reviews, promote them (and make sure they know you're doing it) etc. Not only will you get your links, but you'll get publicity from people who your audience trusts.
The analogy I'd make is, guest blogging is like seeing recipe or a restaurant review by Joe Blogg's Cooking Sauces. Would you buy some? Yes, you might. But if Jamie Oliver mentioned Joe Blogg's Cooking Sauces, you would probably be much more likely to buy.

Do forum posting and blog commenting in UK based websites. There is another way to get backlinks is guest blogging, search for some UK domain websites which accepting free guest posts. Try to get a link from those websites.
Guest posting is the best way to improve the ranking of your keywords. Try out that technique, hope it helps you!

You got to buy links, not only is it the quickest way to get links, but nothing works faster to get eyeballs to what you offer. Forget all this 'SEO link dropping' as directories and portals will simply invoice the SEO's client and serious stuff can happen if they refuse to pay, thus dropping clients into a ton of hassle.
Am sure the SEO's client will find a way of thanking them - likely by firing em quicker than a mongoose can dance.

The best way to approach it is to stop approaching it as link building and focus on link earning. Links that are easy to get likely aren't worth having - start to produce things that people will want to link back to and you're on the right path.

Google even added Guest Posting to their Webmaster Guidelines recently (in August) stating that they now consider "Low Quality Guest Posting" as a violation of their guidelines.

Squidoo is good, if you can provide good articles. It doesn't matter where your articles are located. Some SEOs even post in .ru sites and rank for .uk. The importance is the content. If the content is made for UK, then it will work.
I can't give you a list, but you don't need it. Look for something which is related to your niche. Try finding places to post that are related, not some random directories (Google doesn't like directories any more). Look for communities. E.G. If you are writing for weight loss, then gind a community/website that writes for health orientated topics. Submit your article there.
Always look for fresh places and don't spam. Don't submit an article locating to the same website from a directory more than twice. Some people do it more, but that could be a bad signal. Always find fresh places.
And when you have submitted your article, try to write articles about it, share it, use Reddit, use bookmarks. Make that article big and important. Make it rank. This way you will not only have a link, but a link coming from an important place.

The days are gone when this used to work. It was great in its day, but now web space has value attached to it, and this value means chargeable fees my friend...
Only way the free link thing may work, is based on recommendations eg: I see a site in passing, and I say to friend A "This site is great, it does x,y and z as its unique" but this is about attracting a user-base and not links that lead to sales. So you'll get the odd site possibly linking to you, which in reality wont ever get you started enough to make you stand out, as not enough links required in SERPS to be worth while and youll spend your lifetime forcing it to work and its impossible for some small time local website to do this.
Too small to scale up and wrong type of biz for masses to bother linking to.

I'm not saying that by starting content marketing you'll instantly be pulling in millions of visitors, I just think it's a better use of your time than old school "link building" these days.
Run of the mill forum links/profile links/social bookmarks/comment links etc. have little to no effect on rankings these days - and will actively get you penalised if you overuse them.
It's about moving away from that old mindset which is becoming dangerous, and figuring out what works now.
Honestly I think UX has more of an impact than any of the previously mentioned factors now anyway.
