best hosting reseller package

Hi there

any recommendations for a hosting company doing good deals on reseller accounts (please, no suggestions for your own services I want recommendations!) that is also very reliable, who doesnt use an 08 number for customer support :mad: (unless its a free phone number) and who is generally a good all round hosting provider.

I have 3 reseller accounts:

(beware of the one with a similar name)

Very cheap and reliable. I have had about 10 sites on this for over 12 months and I can't recall a single issue.

United Hosting

I have 2 accounts here. Expensive but used to be very quick at sorting any problems. However, over the last few months I've seen a few outages lasting over half an hour. On one occasion it was over half a day.

Service is now very poor and I'll be leaving asap.

euk hosting - avoid at all costs

1&1, web fusion or any of the advertise the mostest and be the cheapest - avoid at all costs.

I've used 1&1 Internet now for over 8 years and don't agree with this at all! Ok, so it's a pain in the backside to physically speak to them but that's the same with many hosting company (indeed many companies full stop) now!

Their packages are easy to follow, emails and account managing is easy, good webstats. I don't see the problem :)

What is wrong with 0845 numbers, they are just local rate?

It might be a good idea to post your full requirements (Windows or Linux reseller hosting, what level of support you require) etc.

I can't speak for the original poster but personally I make a lot of calls from my mobile and the 08xx numbers aren't included in my minutes, so end up costing me money - geographic all the way! The same applies to a lot of landline call packages too.

The other problem is that it's always a lottery whether you can connect to a NGN (non-geographic number) from overseas - hence a lot of companies (esp banks) publishing geographic numbers in international format 'if dialing from overseas'.

08 numbers are not cheap from a mobile if I ever need to ring from a mobile for support.

I'm not really fussed on price, prefer reliability on both the server and the customer service. So recommendations from people who are using providers who have experience of both without any problems is what i'm looking for. If any companies like that also happen to be offering a good deal atm, then all the better.

I have only had a few problems with DHosting, and all of these issues were resolved swiftly by the customer services support line. Its good to know that problems will be quickly resolved when they occur.

yeah dlhosting sounds good from the ones i've check out here already. some seem a bit too desperate to get you hooked up, especially those for £1 for the first month or 3....they know your not going to mess around moving your website after a month or two :rolleyes:

I know you said you didn't want hosts to post but since you mentioned this after Red Balloon's reply, I'll just mention we do have an 01 number too, listed on our contact page :) Works out cheaper for us after all :D

We take some services from DHosting - service is excellent - i'm always pestering Chris :D

He knows his stuff when it comes to windows hosting, you'd be in good hands with him.

Another thumbs up for Dhosting, I too am always pestering chris and he always responds very quickly and is very helpful.

there's no downtime I have noticed so far, which is important

We had a requirement for some windows-based hosting earlier in the year, and used Chris at Dhosting - there were a few teething problems in the setup (all entirely down to me I may add) and Chris couldnt have been more helpful.

The site has been running about 6 months now, and the fact that I've not had to contact Chris even once since - says it all about the reliability and uptime :-)

OK been checking out the links in these posts so far. What's the difference between having a reseller account and a managed VPS? Sorry if it sounds a daft question but I suppose want I want to know is, what will I get over and above with a VPS that I don't get with a reseller account (apart from resource level chosen - I understand that much!) and what won't I get?

and are vps servers more reliable?

VPS Stand's (if i remember correctly) for Virtual Private Server
and i would imagine it's like having your own server in somebody elses possesion

however i think that there can be charges for things like re-booting your VPS (some offer remote re-booting for free!) and there are also other charges for things you will need if you plan on being a reseller like WHM (which i think is a billing software)

Generally with a VPS unless it's fair share you will get dedicated resources such as 1 full cpu core, dedicated RAM, larger diskspace allocations that aren't generally oversold depending on the provider you use.

A reseller package with a decent provider would work out cheaper for you than a managed VPS/VDS.

If your unsure, speak to your provider about your requirements and they will suggest what is best for you. I'd hazzard a guess you'll work quite well on a decent reseller package.

What scripting technologies do your websites make use of? PHP/MySQL, ASP/ASP.net/MS-SQL etc?

With a reseller account you are sharing a server with other customers, with a VPS you are still sharing with other customers but with a VPS you are just about completely isolated from other customers, so if they cause a problem it should not cause an issue for you.

On the 0845 discussion we will not be publishing the 0845 number on any of our sites from the end of September.

Looking at the asterisk pbx logs 90% of inbound calls come through on the 01253 808485 number mostly from mobiles and the odd land line i.e. clients using free mins etc.

Many companies give you the choice of management when you purchase. You will obviously pay a little extra for it but it can be worthwhile to start with until you are used to the way everything is working.

Yes and No!

Some provide a control panel and call it managed but in real terms that is not the case. A true managed service will be tailored to your needs and in most cases not even involve a control panel, the provider will monitor your VPS/VDS or Dedicated server and make sure it performs to your requirements, if it isn't performing correctly they may make recommendations for configuration or hardware changes. A managed service includes a large amount of work for the provider hence it isn't cheap.

When you see VPS or Server management at next to no cost including a control panel you are not going to be getting a full managed service.

Don't forget moving to a VPS / VDS doesn't mean you are going to get better performance or stability than on a decent shared hosting platform. Many VPS providers sell their services cheap but overload their systems to the point that shared hosting would be faster and more stable.

Have to agree, I switched to 1and1 about 3 years ago and haven't had any problems with them. The tech support is in the States and mostly (nobody's perfect), they seem to know what they are speaking about

Also worth mentioning are Linode and Slicehost, both of which offer very 'bare bones' Virtual Private Networks for very little outlay per month (dedicated VPS from $19 per month in some cases).

They are both US based, but if you choose the Newark location at Linode for instance, that has fantastic speeds for Europe. Linode also have a really neat 'control panel.' You need to know roughly what you're doing, but it's a LOT more intuitive than many unmanaged VPS services.

You can set them up exactly the way you like and have full root access etc. We're running Ubuntu server, a really well-supported and stable open source software project (no expensive software fees!) and it didn't take long for me to get stuck into Ubuntu, the community's absolutely fantastic! (I'm not even of a computing background, but that's changing quickly!).

Also in the UK are VPS dot net, which is more 'user friendly' to the extent that they even offer services and tools that enable you to be a host reseller :)

I have a reseller account with Hostgator. They're not the cheapest, but they've been absolutely reliable in the 3 years I have used them. I used IX webhosting before that, not for long though, I had never experienced a poorer service.
The exchange rate was a big help using US hosts, or at least it was up until Gordon gave the £ lead boots. :p
