Hi
we are a startup business here in the UK, and spent the last 2 years building a custom software solution for small - mid size businesses, to enable them trade online and have done so much work and ready to trade

We are now trying to get a payment gateway to resell their Omni channel solutions and cant seem to sign up on the main providers e.g. MC, Visa, WorldPay etc as we have sent emails and yet to get a response, they claim to support small companies, but no answer. I got a response from a few e.g. moneycorp, thunes.com and others, who said they wont deal with us as we dont have 3 years trading experience

Does anyone have any experience on this ? Or know how to go about this ?

WE ARE LOOKING TO

1. Resell Payment terminals for to our clients
2. Deploy e payments for them online
3. deploy all things financial e.g. cross country forex

We already have a few clients, but struggling to speak to the main providers. Bearing in mind, we built our software solutions from scratch

please advise

many thanks
E

Why do you need a terminal for online payments?

Why can't you just integrate one of the many payment portal to your application?

The way to start is to speak to merchant account providers and become a 'partner', recommender or affiliate.

You do not deal with the main providers unless you are a (big) financial institution.

Without a track record, it would be almost impossible to become a merchant account provider.

Hi thanks for your message. I work for Worldpay and very closely with the partnership team. Would you like to send me a private message for me to have a better understanding of your business proposition?

Payment gateways and financial service providers are notoriously risk-averse. For startups like yours—especially without three years of trading history—they see red flags: no financial track record, unproven revenue, and the potential for fraud or chargebacks if you’re reselling their solutions.

Reselling payment terminals, offering e-payments, and dabbling in cross-border forex adds complexity—they’re worried about liability and compliance (think PCI DSS, FCA regulations, etc.). The big guys (Worldpay, Visa, Mastercard) often prioritize established firms or require middlemen (acquirers or reseller programs), while others like Moneycorp and Thunes set hard rules like “3+ years trading” to filter out newbies.

It’s not personal; it’s just their bureaucratic safety net. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck—startups get around this all the time.
