Chinese virus

China built a hospital in a week or 2.
Our government couldnt build a shed in 2 weeks.

Architects,
Public consultations,
H&S,
People putting in complaints about the planned shed,
Architects redesigning it - smaller, greener, different type of wood as it does not fit in with surroundings.
Public consutation

Ah yes, architects, who needs 'em.

From CNN last week (can't post the link):
10 dead after coronavirus quarantine hotel collapses in China

The UK Gov in time honoured tradition, has now done a complete 180 degree U turn on large gatherings in a period of 24hrs. Events such as the premier league, Wimbledon, Glastonbury etc look set to be cancelled, but schools still to be left open.

It seems all the criticism of acting so differently to the rest of the world has had an effect.

Strange the way it was reported was that the Football association and other organisations had decided to stop all on their own and not under instructions from the government

Yes and they will follow suit with schools, probably waiting for Easter holidays to 'soften' the impact. Other countries have done it (with the same issues that others have been against it) and they have managed.

Closing the schools doesn't keep the kids home so in itself will have limited effect.

Government could, for the same reasons, close businesses. Will they?
Doubt it.

Many of us buy items from China and other countries who may well have this new virus

Question if goods say from China are sent by post as normal from China, is it possible for the virus to hitch a ride either on or in the package maybe on the poly bag inside the envelope or alternatively will it have a shelf life
Beware on topic post!

Research quoted in the Mirror.......

"Their analysis revealed that the virus can survive for up to four hours on copper and up to 24 hours on cardboard.

However, the results indicate that the virus can survive for the longest time on plastic and stainless steel, surviving for up to three days.

Meanwhile, the study also found that the virus could be detected in aerosols, up to three hours post aerosolisation.

The researchers added: “Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 are plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days.”

So don't splash out for overnight delivery.

The Mail reports today that the CDC in the USA presented four scenarios on this virus back in February of this year.

Worst case scenario for the USA, 21 million people requiring hospitalisation with 1.7 million resulting deaths, the USA has 924000 hospital beds available in total.

Even with intervention starting today it is believed 3million in the USA will fall ill, even at a 1% mortality rate that is 30000 potential deaths caused by the virus. Let’s hope these models are incorrect.

Posted elsewhere, but I'll stick this here as well -

I received the following short article from an Italian doctor who worked at Shenzhen Hospital in China and was appointed by the Chinese government to the Wuhan Pneumonia Virus Study Team or Corona Virus.

Here's a summary -

- If a person has a runny nose with expectoration (ejecting phlegm or mucus) they are not infected with the coronavirus, because pneumonia causes a dry cough without a runny nose. This is the easiest way to identify it.

It's also good to know that the coronavirus is not heat-resistant and dies at a temperature of 26 to 27 degrees. So drink lots of hot water like tea. It is not a cure, but it is good for the body. Drinking hot water is effective in killing all viruses.

Expose yourself to the sun when it's winter.

- The virus is quite large (the cell has a diameter of approx. 400-500 nm) so that any normal mask (not just the 3M N95 mask) can filter it.

If someone who is infected sneezes, they will spread about 3 meters before falling to the ground. that is, it is floating in the air.

- If the virus falls on a metal surface, it lives for at least 12 hours. So remember that if you come into contact with a metal surface, wash your hands thoroughly with soap.

- The virus can remain active in clothing for 6-12 hours. Normal detergent kills the virus. Winter clothing that does not need to be washed daily should be placed in the sun to kill the virus.

Information about the symptoms of pneumonia caused by the coronavirus:

- First, it infects the throat, then it feels like a dry sore throat in the throat that lasts 3 to 4 days.

- Then the virus melts into the nasal fluid and drips into the trachea and gets into the lungs, causing Wuhan's pneumonia. This process takes 5 to 6 days.

- A condition of pneumonia, high fever and difficulty breathing will follow. A stuffy nose is not like a normal stuffy nose. You will feel like you are drowning in water. It is important to see a doctor immediately if you feel this.

About prevention:

- The most common way to get infected is to touch things like handrails, door handles, handles on the bus, etc. in public. Therefore, you should wash your hands frequently. The virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but many things can happen in these 5-10 minutes, e.g. B. rubbing your eyes.

- It is recommended to gargle with a mouthwash containing povidone-iodine, also known as iodopovidone to remove or minimize germs while they are still in the throat (before dripping into the lungs).

I wouldn’t normally question one of your posts, but the human body runs at about 37 degrees so the I would’ve thought the virus would survive at that temperature at least to take hold.

I had the same magic thought and much of that post may be bogus. Or just mistranslated. Most viruses die at between 70 and 80C! It was sent to me from a German news agency as being the actual report from that doctor.

Sunshine (well, a strong UV source) does kill nearly all viruses.

How exactly will drinking hot water - and tea or coffee tends to be hot - impact a virus within your body?
Mouth, throat, stomach - sure. Elsewhere? No.

It sounds like one of those myths about a cold.

Reading today that 27 million in the USA are not insured for medical assistance , Mainly illegal immigrants and if the they visit a hospital there is a automatic test to see if they are registered and then face deportation as a outcome
May not be good for holding back the virus, a catch 22 situation

Can you come and bleed the injectors on my tractor, please? When you've done that, the digger needs fixing.

I'll be perfectly happy for you to do this online!

We also have some building work coming up - I'd be very happy to have that all done online.

It occured to me that with millions of people being forced to stay at home as a result of the Corona Virus paying their bills will be difficult.

So I started searching for work-at-home online programs that could help someone generate an income from home anywhere in the world.

I came across this site that has some of the top selling affiliate marketing ( a Billion Dollar Industry ) courses in the USA

The first course on the site is recommended by Kevin O'Leary from Shark Tank and Forbes famous #1 Marketer in the world Grant Cardone. It pays affiliate income to every country in the world. The 2nd and third courses are USA , UK , Canada , Australia only.

Curious if anyone has had any experience with any of these affiliate marketing programs , you can see them at this site HomePay100.com

As countries go into lockdown working from home online could be the only source of revenue for some people.

So this is our situation. We have a spa that mainly does massage and numbers are dropping day by day. We will end up closing our doors either through a case linked to a customers or even a staff member.. We have just signed up for a fresh ten year lease after being trading for seven years up until now. We are a ltd company with no guarantors but we relay want to slog this one out if we can.

Our rent inc service charge is just over £4k a quarter and we save every week to cover this and the VAT, Ni bills etc.. rent is due in two weeks.

We will have about £10k in our account after this quarter rent gets paid. We dont know what to do for the best after the shit hits the fan and we have to close our doors.. We was thinking to strip back everything apart from the rent and try and sit it out for a while but the government will fine us if we don`t pay sick to our staff, which in turn will strip our cash away much faster.. Four staff members will be due redundancy if we lay them off. We want to reopen and re-employ the staff etc. We will of course be stopping our own wages first.

Do businesses close down and re open as a different company? I presume this would null the lease and leave you to the risk of eviction if the landlord wanted you out?

Our VAT bill is normally around £10k a quarter, so we wont have that for sure..

Really don`t know how to mitigate this situation.

Where are you based?

Lenders and banks are being encouraged to be sympathetic to this common plight, and both the English and Scottish governments have put relief in place particularly for industries like yours.

Rates holidays, various reductions in outgoings, grants, cash flow funding, tax funding. There are options.

I’d speak to your landlord as well.

The economy is going to take a huge hit, the landlord might struggle to find someone else to take it on very quickly - I know I’d rather defer (or possibly write off) rent for a few months than lose a good tenant altogether.

I really wish you the best. It’s no consolation I know but there are a lot of people in the same boat. Speaking to some friends of mine today, business is running at 30% of where it should be. They will be running into problems as early as the end of the month if it continues (which it almost certainly will).

France in lockdown from Midnight for all ‘non essential’ businesses.

Italy in lockdown.

Spain in lockdown.

I’d be amazed if we get as far as Wednesday without any kind of restrictions on movement in the UK.

Nobody mentions UAE at the moment. Our daughter teaches there and the schools are closed for at least 4 weeks (e-learning) with a rumour it will be till the end of term (June). They have also now suspended virtually all entry visas.from Monday. Far fewer cases (allegedly) than UK

I had considered moving to China but I’m sick of their food.

Different ways to possibly increase chance's of surviving the "covid19" virus

Vitamin C

Vitamin supplementation will be more effective in those that are deficient. However-

"supplementation with vitamin C appears to be able to both prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections"

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5707683/

"The vitamin C protocol was evaluated in patients with severe pneumonia. Hospital mortality tended to drop in the treatment group."

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0883944118307780

There's currently a clinical trial underway in China for it as a COVID19 treatment

https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04264533

They will get 24,000mg intravenously per day. You can't take that much orally without side effects, but 2,000mg per day is probably fine.

Vitamin D
"new global collaborative study has confirmed that vitamin D supplementation can help protect against acute respiratory infections."

News: https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/st...irms-vitamin-d-protects-against-cold-and-flu/

Study: https://www.bmj.com/content/356/bmj.i6583

Watch:

Salt
A saline nasal rinse multiple times a day may help: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-37703-3

A nurse here wrote that it is a good idea to do a

"saltwater steam inhalation every 4 hours to coat the lungs with antimicrobial properties"

I can't find science to corroborate the claims, but nebulisers with saline do appear to be used to treat respiratory infections:

https://www.ecronicon.com/ecpe/pdf/ECPE-07-00196.pdf

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4644020/

Mullein Tea
"May treat respiratory conditions... May help fight viral infections"

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/mullein-tea

It's an expectorant (clears mucus from lungs), reduces inflammation, and has antiviral properties.

It's also used as an antimalarial: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/438064

Zinc
Zinc inhibits SARS/Coronavirus replication in vitro

https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1001176

From the Lancet's Reducing mortality from 2019-nCoV:

"Zinc and other metal-containing formulations appear to have anti-viral activity, are safe, cheap, and readily available."

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30305-6/fulltext

"Clinical trial data support the value of zinc in reducing the duration and severity of symptoms of the common cold when administered within 24 hours of the onset of common cold symptoms"

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15496046

However it is not recommended to take zinc for more than a few days in a row, or to use it long-term. (https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/qa/is-longterm-use-of-zinc-safe)

Tonic Water
Tonic water contains Quinine in small amounts. While there are no studies showing efficacy of quinine on COVID19 treatment, its chemically similar sibling Chloroquine does: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0166354220301145

83mg quinine / litre of Tonic Water, so several litres of it a day could possibly be helpful.

Additionally, this is controverial, but consider not rushing to reduce fever unless you have to:

"A moderate fever (less than 40 °C) is beneficial"

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4145646

"Popping pills for flu fever might make things worse"

https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn24911-popping-pills-for-flu-fever-might-make-things-worse/

Avoiding a Cytokine Storm
An overreaction of the immune system called a Cytokine Storm is what is likely to be doing the killing, according to these two studies:

  1. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30305-6/fulltext

  2. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00134-020-05991-x
(News)

It may also be why children aren't typically severe cases.

I can't say this with authority as I can't find the data, but what I've gathered is that the cytokine storm happens at the late stage of the disease. So if you get to that point, consider-

  • Snaffling down as much garlic as you can handle:
"The present study produced some evidence for an immunomodulatory effect of garlic, as well as the modulation of cytokine production"

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23039014

  • And Turmeric:
"The suppression of cytokine release by curcumin correlates with clinical improvement in experimental models of disease conditions where a cytokine storm plays a significant role in mortality"

http://iv.iiarjournals.org/content/29/1/1.full

N.B. Turmeric is better activated in combination with black pepper: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/turmeric-and-black-pepper#curcumin-absorption

Youth
Next, some of you are thinking that you're young so you're not worried about it. Let me change that for a moment. Not about dying. You know your chances are pretty good to not die from this. But, the numbers of fit, young, healthy people who require hospitalisation to survive are significant.

12% of 15-49 year olds (67 severe : 490 not severe) require hospitalisation, compared to 28.8% of >65 year olds.

See: https://i.imgur.com/W3X33Y5.jpg
From: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2002032 table 1

See this image from this following study: https://i.imgur.com/ObufUlz.jpg

Median ages of severe cases (so 50% of ICU patients were below these ages):

Meanwhile in France, the number of infections has doubled in the last three days, to 4500. Of the 300 in ICU, half of the patients are UNDER 60.

Worryingly, France is only testing for Covid19 if the patient needs urgent hospital care, so the number of the infected could be much higher. According to a friend, calls have been jammed to the French version of 111 for the last couple of days.
It would appear they are being totally swamped by this virus.

Not sure why there is a much higher younger demographic in France, possibly because they still smoke a lot?
