Chinese virus

They are being advised by science.

They are walking into a nightmare, they just don't know it yet.

Classic statement from Boris today (based on scientific facts) Anyone over 70 should avoid going on cruises.

Absolutely laughable.

They have not learnt from China and more importantly Italy.

Total incompetence.

Its kinda obvious. Heck, pretty much anyone could decide based on the past month to not go on a cruise any time soon.

Bad news for cruise companies.

If, what I think is going to happen happens.

I'm impressed by the way things are being handled, not just by the Government but also by the Opposition - seeing very little politics from either side.

"They are walking into a nightmare, they just don't know it yet."

I suspect they know what is coming, know there is little they can do to stop it, but now want it spread over a minimum of 6 to 12 months rather than all happening in a 2 or 3 month period.

Trouble is - this may appear again next winter.
Rinse and repeat for many years.

Or may burn out never to be seen again.

The truth is (as it seems) that by following 'the scientific approach', the UK government had no interest in trying to contain the virus.

The scientific approach is to let as many people get it in order to develop herd immunity.

This could bring the government down.

Herd immunity would require around 94% to have it and become immune. Not carrying the virus to spread.
Its darn hard doing herd immunity with stuff you do get immunised for. Some places never manage the required percentage - UK doesn't meet required percentage in measles.

Relying on herd immunity both presumes all the herd necessary do become immune long term and that the virus doesn't mutate.

No vulnerable person should be relying on herd immunity alone.

International sporting events being cancelled left, right and centre!

Australia F1 off.

Euro 2020 (probably) off.

Wimbledon (probably) off.

Olympics (probably) off.

And the list get's longer . . . . . . . Can you add to this list of what you know or have heard of?

USA has shutdown the whole of Broadway, no theatre for the foreseeable future.

Which is why the want it spread over a 6 to12 month period rather than a 2 or 3 month period

Chances are 95% of people who get it, won't even use a NHS service, they will just get it, self isolate, dose up on paracetamol and go to bed.

You mean a bit like when they get the flu?

Tell that to Patrick Vallance.

Boris is relying on (hiding behind) the scientific 'shield'

The public will eventually have their voices heard.

The China 'method' should be adopted whereby any suspected patients with the virus went to specific hospitals that were designated for Coronavirus infections only. They did not share hospitals.

Frontline medics were adequately trained, suited and booted.

The UK could never do that and have learned nothing from China's experience in handling the virus.

China built a hospital in a week or 2.
Our government couldnt build a shed in 2 weeks.

Architects,
Public consultations,
H&S,
People putting in complaints about the planned shed,
Architects redesigning it - smaller, greener, different type of wood as it does not fit in with surroundings.
Public consutation,
Goes to the council to vote on,
Passes...just.
By this stage we have left the EU and there is a shortage of trades.
When they do eventually get everyone and everything in place.
It P'ing down and it is the wrong kind of rain meaning they cant build for 4 months until the ground dries out to acceptable levels.... All for a shed!

Bit of an exaggeration, but China built a hospital in 2 weeks. They get a bad reputation for many things, but I doubt any other country could pull that together.

Totally agree.

They will be found out for being inept.

Not to have specialised locations for suspected patients of Coronavirus to go to in order to be treated, is both shameful and shows their negligence.

Speak to any GP and they will tell you they are not prepared.

Boris will keep saying . . . . .yeh, but, but I was being advised by the top medical and scientific experts in the land . . . . . total bo!!@c&$

I notice every politician says “being lead by science”, it’s classic ass protection so when it all hits the fan they can blame scientists.

I also notice when each death in UK is announced it always includes “with serious underlining health problems” deliberately to stop us peasants panicking.

Has anyone else had a message via this forum from a “reporter from Reuters” requesting a telephone interview ?

Politicians acting like politicians. Nothing new.

And knowing him he'll come out of whatever smelling like roses.
We can't blame the past 50 years on him. Past 3 months sure...

There are millions with 'serious underlying health problems'. Usually living as normal a life as they can get away with.
They could, conceivably, use the term in vast majority of deaths from this virus here. And not be caught telling a lie.

From the Worldometers site.

If correct then virus could spread multiple ways.

Abstract
HCoV-19 (SARS-2) has caused >88,000 reported illnesses with a current case-fatality ratio of ~2%. Here, we investigate the stability of viable HCoV-19 on surfaces and in aerosols in comparison with SARS-CoV-1.

Overall, stability is very similar between HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1.

We found that viable virus could be detected in aerosols up to 3 hours post aerosolization, up to 4 hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel.

HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1 exhibited similar half-lives in aerosols, with median estimates around 2.7 hours. Both viruses show relatively long viability on stainless steel and polypropylene compared to copper or cardboard: the median half-life estimate for HCoV-19 is around 13 hours on steel and around 16 hours on polypropylene. Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days

there's been reports of people getting reinfected straight after recovering though, and the second time the chance for survival is a lot lower

E3

Those who develop lung problems such as pneumonia may well end up with some damage if infection severe enough. Lose a percentage of lung capacity. Then catch something causing shortness of breath...

It may not be all those who had it then catch it again - humans are a species covering considerable range of bodies. Some may develop immunity for a while, some may go too far and have their own body attacking itself (Sepsis).
And some - like with some other illnesses - may never develop resistance.

Mikel Arteta tested positive!

Arsenal FC gone into self-isolation!

(Probably infected after meeting with Olympiakos owner last week)

(Not enough they knocked us out of the cup . . . .)

Are you in close contact with anyone from Wuhan? I hear it’s still in lockdown so I’m not convinced of statistics coming out from there.
I have 3 close contacts in Wuhan and cannot get in touch with them anymore. The last I heard from them was about 2 weeks ago.

I have been told by a mutual contact that they are fine, but cannot move out of their apartment.

Very worrying!

I do not believe any China figures that have been coming out for the past few weeks. (Nor should anyone).

Internet in China is becoming slower and slower. . . . .

I'm expecting a knock on the door soon . . . . .

Premier League likely to be cancelled for the rest of the season.

I think 100% will be cancelled.

No chance. Too much money at stake.

My thought would be to get all players and staff to self isolate for a week and then just stay in their group for say 3 weeks. You could probably get 7 games played in that time, if all of the important positions and pretty much guaranteed (ie winners, top 4, europa places and relegation then you could end the season a game or 2 early), just makes the best of a bad situation - assuming players are happy to stay away from family for 3-4 weeks... for £150k a week I would, hell! for £1.50 a week I would :P

Yikes! I just noticed, I do not have an Ignore button any more!

Oh, never mind, it seems like you can still Ignore people, but you need to go to their profile and look in the top right corner.

It'll take a brave man . . . . . . .or woman . . . . to predict what will happen in a year's time.

And yet that is what businesses often have to do.

Using best estimates, guessing based on some information or whatever.

If you want particular goods to sell at Christmas then ordering in January makes sense. Knowing you may not be able to reorder that product at all makes for ordering what you think is the right amount.

We were discussing buying theatre tickets 10-12 months down the line . . . . . . .

Stop being Mr D!
