Chinese virus

If schools close kids will be playing with other kids who then also spread it to parents anyway.

That depends on the parents.

If you have 2-3 kids and they stay home - it is not being spread.
I have a 2 year old and she is quite content being on her own, ok she is too young for school but she does go to a childminder.

If you have a 15 year old lads, they are probably good on their xbox.

It would help, but only for so long.

Out my window in the office I can see on to the A9 just south of Perth (main route between north and south Scotland). I just saw 4 military personnel transport vehicles in convoy heading south. Unrelated? Or are the military moving people around to get ready for supporting in some way.

Probably unrelated. Military vehicles are on the roads everyday.

This is another reason why it's important to time things like closing schools correctly.

Human nature is that people will put up with being holed up at home with their bored, screaming kids, and no ability to do their jobs (or trying to work whilst childminding).....and they'll do that for a certain amount of time. After that, they start to get annoyed, start bending the rules and before long, the purpose of isolating people from each other is rendered moot.

So it's important not to go in too hard, too soon.

Just got an email from the Hilton hotel group outlining what they're doing to deal with the disease.

"We have increased the deployment of antibacterial hand sanitizers"

Way to combat a virus...round of applause

"We have increased the deployment of antibacterial hand sanitizers"

Like in the supermarkets - all the antibacterial hand sanitiser is gone....and all the soap remains. You only need sanitiser when you can't get to a sink with soap. It's a poor alternative to thoroughly washing your hands.

And God only knows what everyone thinks they need all the loo roll for!

If you have kids not in school you have parents not at work. For many families that will mean economic meltdown. And for many employers.

Local news site today. Headmistress of a school hopes she has made the right decision cancelling her school trip to Italy. Apparently she found it a difficult decision to make.

A quote heard yesterday: 'Panic buying makes no sense until everyone else is doing it, then it does'

Even then, it doesn't. I overheard a Manager having to deal with an irate man in the supermarket yesterday as he'd actually run out of loo roll and they didn't have any left. The manager made an excellent point: he said that just wait, their supply chains are in good order and the loo roll will be restocked. Once all the panic buyers have filled every room in their house with loo roll, they'll stop buying it in bulk and the supply/demand situation will return to normal for normal people.

Makes sense to the people who have plenty of supplies on hand after buying them.

No need to risk yourself going to the shops for a month if you have a couple of months supplies on hand.

I don't see the logic in this 'Delay' phase. I heard that the reason is to delay the peak until the NHS is less busy with other illnesses.
Surely treating our current 500 cases now will be much easier than 2 months time when there could be 10,000s of cases to work on.

I seen this a few days ago, I didnt want to post it until I could see if it was accurate or not.

Deaths seems to be a little worse than predicted as of today (10 as I type).
Known infected has generally been about a day behind (so less than predicted) but overall it does not appear to be a million miles out.

- Just to add, this is not my prediction.

More limiting say the intensive care needs to 10,000 a week (for maybe 1500 beds) - strung over a longer time period. Rather than 50,000 a week needing intensive care needs for a shorter time period.

The fact the virus will spread and the fact we will be hit hard is beyond control.
When it hits hardest, when resources are able to be put together and used - those are subject to influence.

Just had an email through regarding a trade show.
For those in the food sector. Hey, just think the big exhibition places will be in trouble from cancellations too.

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 health situation, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the NEC UK Food Shows.

We have been working closely with the NEC to secure new dates; National Convenience Show, Farm Shop & Deli Show and Food & Drink Expo will now take place at the NEC on the 7th – 9th September 2020.

There is not enough hall space to co-locate Foodex and The Ingredients Show on the same date, so these shows will move to 12th – 14th April 2021 to coincide with the 2021 running of the William Reed UK Food Shows.

UK Gov believes 5-10,000 UK citizens currently infected, they just don’t know it yet.

Height of the virus expected to peak in 14/15 weeks.

They are being advised by science.

They are walking into a nightmare, they just don't know it yet.

Classic statement from Boris today (based on scientific facts) Anyone over 70 should avoid going on cruises.

Absolutely laughable.

They have not learnt from China and more importantly Italy.

Total incompetence.

I think people should realise that the idea of self isolation isn't really to stop getting it. it's really for people who have got it, to slow down spreading it.

From my understanding, the best thing to do is get prepared for having it, hope to get it soon rather than get it when it's at it's peak.

Won't be long before Coronavirus parties for healthy people are the thing to do, go somewhere, get it, then self isolate in a planned way (away from the vulnerable).

Think about when is the most convenient time to get it and try to get it then.

I'm starting to get worried - seriously. Not about the virus, but about the impact from cancelled jobs - already cancellations are pouring in. Across all my income streams. My tribute band, for instance - we have 3 contracts remaining until November. Most of the work is corporate or for outside events and they're all running scared. Our contracts tend to be pencil, heavy pencil and eventually, ink - traditionally they're always late turning to ink, and many get performed while still not actually signed. People can duck out at any time - you live with this but just don't take another - and they're dropping like flies. I'm at a school this week talking about a biggish contract for audio and lighting. I bet this gets cancelled during the week, pre-visit. Not a good time to be self-employed.

This virus will affect all businesses (The vast majority at least) in every country in the world for a period of 4 - 6 months at least.

Some (many) will not survive.

Many businesses in UK are undercapitalised without adequate resources to get over this period.

Contingency plans should already be in effect.

As I posted previously - look at the %'s

before we get to the peak 60million people (in the UK) will either have it or already have had it.

The best idea now, is get it in a planned way, when it is most convenient to have it, then self isolate once you've got it (not before you get it).

That's my interpretation of what the science experts are telling us.

If, what I think is going to happen happens.

I'm impressed by the way things are being handled, not just by the Government but also by the Opposition - seeing very little politics from either side.

"They are walking into a nightmare, they just don't know it yet."

I suspect they know what is coming, know there is little they can do to stop it, but now want it spread over a minimum of 6 to 12 months rather than all happening in a 2 or 3 month period.

Indeed, I’ve been saying this all along, and it’s giving us a mortality rate far higher than reality.

But that may not be a bad thing - a higher mortality rate makes people take notice.

The truth is (as it seems) that by following 'the scientific approach', the UK government had no interest in trying to contain the virus.

The scientific approach is to let as many people get it in order to develop herd immunity.

This could bring the government down.

I think that sums it up, but eventually a large % of the population will appreciate the Government has no choice.

You have to remember , they can't say the things that we would say to our mates in the pub

The way I personally see it now is, I hope I get it soon, whilst the NHS can still cope, rather than get it at it's peak when 2 or 3 million other people will probably have it at the same time.

The NHS are ill prepared.

They do not know how to protect front line doctors adequately.

(I'm saying this as I have a son who works in the NHS and is at a hospital where there has been a recent death from this virus and infected patients).

Which is why the want it spread over a 6 to12 month period rather than a 2 or 3 month period

Chances are 95% of people who get it, won't even use a NHS service, they will just get it, self isolate, dose up on paracetamol and go to bed.

The China 'method' should be adopted whereby any suspected patients with the virus went to specific hospitals that were designated for Coronavirus infections only. They did not share hospitals.

Frontline medics were adequately trained, suited and booted.

The UK could never do that and have learned nothing from China's experience in handling the virus.

International sporting events being cancelled left, right and centre!

Australia F1 off.

Euro 2020 (probably) off.

Wimbledon (probably) off.

Olympics (probably) off.

And the list get's longer . . . . . . . Can you add to this list of what you know or have heard of?

I can’t think of any major events but In the US, NBA, MLS, NHL and MLB leagues have all be postponed or on hold.

Serie A on hold until April. La Liga and the Dutch and Portuguese leagues on hold as well.

Not sport but Glastonbury are continuing to press ahead on the assumption that it’s on. I haven’t heard what’s happening with any other UK festivals.
