Is it just me, or has UKBF been a bit quiet and peaceful lately? I think we could do with a good fight to lift our spirits. Here are some suggested topics:

- Stupid thread titles, like "what do you think of", or "does anyone know".

- Stupid new business ideas (come on, someone must have a really amazing new idea??)

- Someone selling really cheap hosting, £2 a year, unlimited bandwidth.

Anything, just bring it on!

Good question. While YoY turnover is up 35%, YoY profit is only up around 27%. Mainly due to weak pound.

That's pretty good bearng in mind what's going on. Just goes to show that if the business model is sound and run effectively then recessions can be times of opportunity:)

FWIW, my sales are flat as I have been out of stock of my best selling products, but gross margin is five points up. Principally due to new lines being introduced which are of higher margin.

On a more serious note....

I am in the process of setting up a website that will put an end to eBay. I plan on using the best form of advertising, 'Word of Mouth' and reckon I will save myself a fortune on advertising costs! Because I am not spending on Advertising, my fees will be 2% lower than eBays. I have even found a host for £7 per year! Result!!!

Will keep you updated.

Yeah..the site shuts down in the evening...something about the servers needing to cool down & save electricity. Not sure exactly as I am not technically minded.

Most people are in bed now anyway.

The Servers usually operate 10:11am 1pm & 4:34 - 7:01pm.

eBay has the edge at the minute but I'm working on it!

Thanks Sysops - I hadn't logged on for a while as I couldn't find anything interesting to read and was busy anyway - but this thread made me chuckle.

Going back to the earlier Q about online sales, I did post elsewhere that my traffic had doubled since Jan 1st but no-one believed me - didn't have the energy to start a fight - too much work to do!

Wow. Is that coming from natural search, referrals, or a mix?

At the risk of any of those SEO people coming after me and starting a fight (because they don't believe this is possible and that any increase in traffic can only be down to their paid for SEO), I think it is mainly from natural search and Google in particular because of the changes they made at New year to the way they display search results.

We have had no. 1 for our main search term for over 2 years now but for our 2nd and 3rd main search term we have now got not only 1st position in google (previously it hovered between 1 and 3) but a subpage has 2nd position (or vice versa). So to occupy 2 top slots instead of one has produced a lot more traffic.

Secondary to this and a lot less important, we are getting a lot more traffic from fora - our 4th biggest referrer (non search) is mumsnet.com.

Also, lots more traffic from Europe and USA because of the weak pound.

And finally external factors such as the fact that we held off until after Christmas having our sale and it is the prime selling season for some types of garment.

But very much the google changes mainly.

So our traffic is more than double what it normally is and more than 10x what is was on the worst days in December. Last week we turned over the biggest amount ever in the last 6 years of trading. Thanks to Google - hope it stays that way!
