OK, this could just be me rambling but what would you guys think of trying to run an Auction of talent (the business kind) to raise money for a Charity of choice or maybe two if we could make it big enough.

This has been brought on by realising that it is "Children in Need" today and I hadn't realised and normally I would have been involved in doing something through work. I was just sitting here wondering what I could do and it struck me that we all have something to offer and there is always someone who would like our products and services.

Up north in Inverness the local radio station runs a very successful Charity Auction twice a year and lots of local businesses donate. Everything from bags of coal, evening meals, nights out to holidays and services from the likes of gardeners, builders, plumbers, web designers etc.

So do you think we could make it work? or am I totally barking mad:eek:

Woof Woof Baby.

Great idea, I don't know what I can give, but I'd get involved somehow

Sounds like a good idea to me. :) Would it be a virtual auction? :|

Yes, without thinking too hard, we could run it over say a week or perhaps a weekend. Each donating business could make the offer in a thread and it would be timed with the highest bid being the winner. It would be a way of the donating business getting a bit of exposure, the bid winner getting something they need for a knockdown price and the Charity gaining some much needed funds, everyone winning:D

Trying to think of a way of having an actual autioneer with a hammer, (simply cos I can just see Sirearl wielding a hammer) but can't quite see how to make that work.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Come on, bet we could make this work

:eek::eek: Shameless BUMP

Just in case this slipped under the radar because of the login problems at the weekend.

Am I the only one (other than Carl, thanks) who thinks this could be a really good, worthwhile thing to do?

In which case I will slope of to the "Dog house" quietly. Promise;)

I think this is a great idea! Would it be possible through an existing online auction as some kind of sponsoring or so? There are a few ebay like auctions out there that are crying out for a bit of exposure! I guess it's just a matter of co-operation!

Thanks Jacqui, I was basing my idea on MFR, which seems to work really well, we donated and I know it makes big money each time.

I think with a bit of thought and organisation we could do something very similar which could really benefit. If we planned it for a few months from now we could build up donations and interest and then run it over a weekend or couple of days mid week. Each donation could have a thread which would go live at a given time and finish at a given time, highest bid being the winner.

I know this is very rough but it is just thoughts right now.

I'll do a painting, if that's the sort of thing you want? I have other talents, but i'm not sure you'd want them...lol

This is a great idea. Sorry, I have not had much time to come on lately so I missed this thread initially. We would love to help. What do you suggest a graphic designer could do to support this great cause?

Thanks

I'd be happy to donate some product photography or, if anyone in my area wins, a portrait session.

Oh goody, this is great, really glad you think this is a possibility. Obviously will need to speak to the guys and girls in charge but I do think this could really work.

Jayne - a painting would be great
Diana - Pendant sounds lovely
Kay - What about a logo design or banner ad or something?
Brian - sounds good - possible to make it region specific for certain items
Nicola - therapy sessions are perfect
Jeewhizz - anything related to your business would be great

(Ray) Tin says he will offer something seo wise.

Thanks for the interest so far, I am beginning to think we really can do this.

Anyone else?

I had missed this thread too - count me in - I can offer some printing or whatever :)

Maybe we could team up Ray? Would the artwork of the Serengeti be good for someone's office wall (it's on plenty of corporate ones now). The cheetah and the hippo are my favourites .... oh, and the lion...... and the rhino.....

Also - I'd be happy to chat to someone about their business for a day if that would be useful - all exciting strategy stuff - some big companies are foolish enough to listen to me - so I hope that I may have something to offer someone.

Which charity would benefit (hint hint)? Or would we split it between member's favourites (a poll maybe)?

Thanks

Hey! Nobody gets my Full Monty for a Fiver except Rusty!!! I do have some scruples intact:D:D:D

You charge her a fiver? :D

But my Gran is really old and a full monty would be a charitable act in itself? I'll even up my offer to £5.50?

Oops, my mistake I'm afraid... I pay her the Fiver, she thinks it's much better value for money! ;)

Now I can see a big hole growing, after reading the above? :D

I'm off to bed before I cause any more bother.

Night

perhaps the people who win each auction item could nominate a charideeeee

Wouldn't it be fairer if the person who's providing the item chooses the charity? For example, there are a number of religious programmes that are called "charities". I wouldn't want to find myself working for free on their behalf.

Also, I'd prefer a charity that focuses on helping people in the UK.

However, I think it's better to be all working towards the same aim(s).

So, maybe it's time to figure out the one or two charities that are to benefit from this?

Is there not a way to make this thread stick to the top of the forum ....in case it gets lost a few pages away by the many topics that are discussed each day?

It would save any shameless bumping ;)

I think to have individual people ie us people who are donating gifts and services deciding on what charity to donate the money to, could cause people not to bid for that item. Not everyone likes the same charity....likewise some of us may not be happy donating a service to a charity again not to their liking. I definitely think a poll is needed and yes it should be a UK based charity.

I also agree the charity should be a UK one, and a poll would be a good idea.
But to have a poll would need a few nominations first so we know what to put on the poll

Making this post a stickie somewhere would be helpful too :)
