Thoughts on Boris returning as PM?

Is Boris the man for the job right now?

I guess he has more experience than anyone else and a well established relationship with other world leaders is useful (do they respect him though?). On the down side, well where do you begin..

    Thoughts guys?

He is still under investigation by the stabdards committee. If that gors against him (as it probably will) they will be elooking for another leader again after Christmas. To my mind that is the biggest hurdle. The fact he is also a compulsive liar who is mistrusted by most foreign governments ought also to be a hurdle but, heck, this is the Tory party where such things are seen, apparently, as positives.

    Surreal.

I never thought I'd say this, but please can we have Kier Starmer as PM?
I'm really not a fan of Starmer, but looking at all options it makes one think

Despite the rhetoric, Keir Starmer must be breathing a huge sigh of relief that there isn't going to be an election until the Tory cuts have been implemented and the coming 'Winter of Discontent' (and power cuts) are over.

As my old school report said, 'could do better' - but there doesn't seem to be a 'better' out there.

At least Boris never led us into war based on lies
And that is one reason why Blair will never again have a major role to play in the Labour party.

I liked Boris as a politician and I had high hopes for his government, but it seemed ideologically dogmatic. I didn't see any concrete levelling up plans beyond some more hospitals.

In the meantime, they put up NI, didn't implement a windfall tax, the trains are still crap, any time a project gets proposed, it's blocked by NIMBYs so nothing ever gets done, house prices are getting more unaffordable (which, in fairness, wouldn't change under any governent), and there are still roadworks everywhere.

In some ways, he would make sense.

He is the only one who could bat way the claims that he had no mandate - he was the leader in situ at the last election.

He has experience of the role, and during his tenure the economy did not crash.

But unfortunately, he has upset too many people. There is, of course, the parliamentary standards investigation, but Mrs May was found to be in contempt of Parliament and no one cared. It is what politicians do.

So we run the risk of another untried leader re-crashing the economy. Or maybe not. Who knows. It's not like it matters. Oh, wait.....

Before I would have said no way but I spent some time in Greece with some lefties this summer and I realised that going nearer to the left may not be for me.
So I would seek people that I have more in common with. I don't have much in common with Boris but I have more in common with him that I do the sandal wearers that seek to control from the left
Seeking priority rights for the type of people I have never met before and banning beef farming drives me to my traditional Tory routes

    I just had to brief our writers for what my opinion on this was, so here's how the upcoming write up from UKBF is with some comments from you all in the forums woven in;
I think Boris coming back in would damage the Tory brand beyond repair, Sunak is the safest bet for the party noting they need stability and cannot afford any more bad media or disruption. He is also the most likely to reassure the markets. Irrespective, whoever goes in they won't change Hunt from the treasury because it would damage the brand (and markets) too much so Hunt is safe in post and likely to remain for the rest of the term.

A GE won't happen unless the King forces it, Tory's want to stay in power no matter what.

Now off down the bookies to take a punt on all that.

Sunak PM, Hunt Chancellor, Mordaunt Home Secretary/Foreign Secretary + Deputy PM?

I hope Suella Braverman gets nowhere near government, ever again.
Braverman is just the visible end of one of the 2 main splinters of the Tory party whose very aims are opposite to each other.

The libertarian free market part would remove immigration barriers and let the market decide pay rates etc , then the other side is the protectionist closed border side socially conservative group who like Braverman

Finding a cabinet to keep both parts happy and who can work in harmony will not be easy for whoever wins

This may be uncharitable, but in my view, Braverman is trying to compensate for being an ethnic minority by being whiter than white.

I put it down to her being on the rw side of the party rather than colour. Although there are a lot of people who are like "we are in- pull up the drawbridge after us" particularly a large percentage of those i know who are descended from/part of the Ugandan Asian diaspora

I don't think it is uncharitable, but I think it may be racist. Braverman's opinions put her on the extreme right wing of the Tories, bordering on the fascist. Her views are views, sadly, held by many ppeople. Her ethnic origin is not a cause, as far as I can see.

Priti Patel was much the same, and it just makes me wonder why ethnic minorities seem to gravitate to the right wing of the party.

Do they? The right wing of the Tory party is quite large, you might equally say why do so many women seem to gravitate that way? Thatcher, May, Truss, Badenoch, and many others. Perhaps you have an expectation that someone whose family has benefitted from liberal migration policies to by sympathetic, but that seems to be a function of someone's own personality, not country of origin. There is more than 1 white, male right wing cabinet member whose parents migrated here. Raab, for example.

That's a very good question. Although whether Truss was on the right wing, I'm not so sure. Economically, yes, socially, I haven't seen any evidence either way. Her wanting to liberalise immigration for highly skilled migrants is what led Braverman to resign.

Simply from anecdotal evidence, it seems that those who personally benefitted from those policies are sympathetic, while second (or later) generation minorities are not.

What do you have in common with Boris?

It does strike me as odd, when people say he's a man of the people. He's a multi millionaire, always has been, is not self made. He's never run anything successfully, he's always in someone else's pocket and he never actually provides an answer for anything. He just mumbles and jabs his finger and that's taken as the best answer to any question levelled at him. It's very odd. He can literally do no wrong, even when he's wrong.

He's been sacked from every position he's ever been given, I think? And I say 'given' because he's never actually done enough work to earn any position he's held. He's someone who has managed to surf his way to to the top on the backs of others. He ruffles his own hair to look like stig of the dump and I don't see why we want that to be the face of leadership in the UK? A unkempt, dragged through a hedge PM...where are our statesmen?

Ah, but people (well, the British public anyway) just love a chancer!

As an entertainer, maybe. Not as PM during a financial crisis.
That assumes that politicians can actually do anything tangible about a financial crisis, other than provide shiny soundbytes and rhetoric.

Surely it’s people and businesses who get stuff done, not remote nobodies.

They can mitigate the effects of a financial crisis, or - as Liz Truss demonstrated - make it a lot worse.

You may not have noticed, but Truss and Kwarteng managed to do something pretty tangible about a financial crisis!

Can they? How can they make people stop buying crap from Amazon and get us back into the EU?

    Hint: they can’t.

Yes, they could get us back in the EU if they wanted to. Who got us in there in the first place? Hint: Politicians (Edward Heath, to be exact).

As for stopping people from buying from Amazon, they could simply whack a big tax on Amazon. But they won't, because it would destroy all those warehouse jobs.

Not to mention all the labour politicians who went to grammar school.

Sorry everyone, I’ve just tested positive for Covid and have been feeling rather delirious. No doubt I’ve posted some nonsense.

    Sorry. Time out.

So he’s pulled out, wasn’t expecting that!
The reason he didn't declare he was running was so that he could pretend he did not really mean to when he did not get enough support. He hasn't got enough support, so he is pretending he does not want to run. He is also lying in saying he has 102 supporters. If he has more than 100 he would be on the ballot to members and would, terrifyingly, probably win. If he thought he would win he would still be in the running.

What do you expect from a compulsive liar?
