I've just had a call from our local Ford dealer to inform me they're taking orders for the new Ranger.

Not sure why. Whenever I lived in das Americas and Canada I had a Ford F 150 and 250 as company car. What an utterly pile of sh*t of yank engineering these cars were.
I could not figure out why they are some of the best selling cars in the world. There were so many issues with build quality, fell, suspension, awd drive, steering, refuelling etc...
The Ranger nobody really wants and also sits below the F 150 which was already a pile of shit to start of with what makes you want one and not a Toyota Hilux?

The problem for me with the Hilux is that it doesn't have roof bars, why would any truck not have roof bars. Also the Ranger spec is much higher than the Hilux.
In the USA the newer Fords are seen as poor quality and reliability as a work truck, they might look nice, just depends if you don’t mind it being broken down more regular than most.
Mitsubishi and Toyota for myself, but just a personal preference having had Shoguns etc for over 25 years, only one breakdown in all those years. It was on a day I had driven 500miles without stops, the vehicle has 232000 miles on the clock at the time, still repaired it and I am still using it three years later.

A developer I work with in the US says they only sell because they are cheap. Everyone complains about them. Mainly because they keep breaking down. And of no use at all off road because they are RWD.

on the F150 the do:
Ford F-150 4WD? Yes. It comes with rear-wheel drive, or two available four-wheel drive systems. The mechanical 4WD system on XL and XLT uses an electronic shift-on-the-fly system that Ford has used for a while in the F-150.
Worst 4WD drive system ever, useless on road and even worst off road.
I found on the F 150 the suspension to be as poor as possible very spongy, jumpy and bouncy. Steering completely off, soft and gooey with no feedback. Similar to the Fiat 500.
Once your put an actual load on them up to 1000KG the suspension and brakes can't handle it. Breaks overheat. I think F150 were more a lifestyle product than a work horse..
Mine also had the 36 Gallon tank so this took 2 swipes on a credit card as max was 100L per swipe and let me tell you it takes a long time to fill up a 150L dual tank.
Maybe the /ranger is different but the F150 as a "better" higher product it would scare me driving a ranger how bad it would be.

The old Navaras were junk, usually the chassis snapped, I think Nissan replaced thousands in recalls.
Don’t know if the newest ones are any better.

The obvious question must be - do you actually NEED a pickup? The follow-up questions must be - what towing weight, load weight, number of passengers, fuel economy and any other considerations should you be taking into account like reliability and longevity do you expect?

Nobody *needs* a pickup!
They were invented solely to take advantage of the commercial vehicle tax loophole. It means you can buy and run one 100% through the business, but can still drag the wife and kids around without them being lumped about in the back of a Transit!

Sorry Simon that’s bollards. Loads of my clients need pickups for towing machinery to remote places, carrying a full crew of guys (transit only takes 2 passengers), chainsaws in the back, using forestry tracks to reach job sites.
You can hardly say they were invented to take advantage of a UK tax loophole, when they weren’t “invented” in the UK.

Similar argument about 4x4 SUV, until a poor winter comes around every now and then and everyone is thankful some people have them still. All vehicles on the road are required by someone, no single rule for all.
I could never do my work in some mini ev that needs charging every 123 miles, give myself a decent 4x4 diesel that can travel 400 miles on a single tank anyday.

I need a pickup. I have two ford rangers. Jap built though, rebadged Mazdas.
The new fords are just poser vehicles, built for the tax advantages. If you want proof of this, just try to find a poverty spec single cab model with steel wheels for sale at a dealers!!

It is a pimped up Range but it can't carry 1 tonne
The payload capacity drops from one tonne to 680kg, and the Raptor can only pull 2.5 tonnes rather than 3.5 tonnes. All of this means the Raptor can't be classed as a commercial vehicle (though you do pay commercial vehicle VED), so if you're buying one for your business, you can't claim the VAT back

See them at auto salvage yards all the time,, but instead of being in a crash they have just snapped in two. Sad really, it would never have happened under the original Nissan quality control.

I used to have a Ranger. I had absolutely no need for it, and it was a personal vehicle so I didn't get the company tax benefit. I also lost £3,000 in VAT when I sold it.
But man I felt like a boss in my big orange truck!
