Unless of course you believe everything that Matt Cutts says, and follow the Google guidelines to the letter, in which case your site might as well be penalised, as you will most likely never rank for anything anyway.

Google say don't worry about them and concentrate on providing value to your customer. That should be what every business aims for anyway.
Sure, a site has to be built and structured correctly but that should be the case anyway whether the owner is thinking about rankings or not.
