personalised childrenswear

Hello everyone,
I've been a childrenswear designer for the last 10 years and on mat leave with my second child. I'm not keen to go back full time and various management changes had made my work place pretty miserable in the last few months before I left.

I want to start a business selling personalised childrenswear. Tshirts to begin with (think Next style designs with elements of personalisation). Looking at using a dtg print company with dropshipping - although I'd only make between £5-£10 per garment.

I have about 6 months to get going and a bit of savings before I'd have to take a call on my job but am passionate about what I do and would love to make it work.

Would love to know any advice, ideas or any services anyone could offer me.

Check your contract of employment doesn't have any restrictions on you starting up in business for a period after leaving your job.

Yes I've checked what restrictions I have on my contract and I don't think
It will cause any issues.

Sell on Etsy and NOTHS. They have a ready market for this type of stuff.

I used to DTG print for some people who did very well on those platforms.

Yes NOTHS is exactly the platform I was thinking.

Might be worth us talking if you've offered this kind of thing before. I have contacted a number of DTG printers already but not decided on one to use.

Sell on platforms and create your own store in SaaS enviroment (maybe later OpenSource like Magento or PrestaShop ). Create a blog, Instagram and Facebook for your company ( there is a lot of mothers with children ). For a start it should be enough , and the cost (hopefully ) will not be too big for you . Advertising on FB and Instagram should not cost more ( initially ) than 140 pounds monthly.

I have a children's clothing business. I would just say, make sure you do your research. It's not as easy as a lot of people think, unfortunately it's not the case that there are lots of children out there, so it's easy (heard this a lot)! It's a very hard market out there.

Instagram is my best friend, it has really boosted my business more than any other marketing.

Also if you can, have a look into Xmas markets/fairs, it's a little late for most. But you might find a few with a spare place. The big ones are expensive, but they are great for getting your name and product out there. I was surprised by the second year so many people had me on their shopping list.

I no longer offer drop shipping.

Be sure to check if their prints are class 1 oeko tex approved which certifies them as baby safe (the class 1 is the important bit). Most DTG brands are not and there is a lot of nasty stuff in the pre-treat solution and ink.

To begin with Tshirt is a good idea, for Tshirt style basic while classic, never out never unnecessary, very suitable for personalized design and sales.

If need some ready-made plain kids Tshirt of good quality and competitive price, or if some required spec. OEM Tshirt needed...or if some professional producing suggestions needed to best control and perfect both your quality and cost, pls feel free PM me. Thankyou!

Ebay is a fantastic marketplace to sell! I have myself sold personalised pet products on Ebay for many years and the sales volumes are fantastic.

This was good thinking on your part. I know that for my job, I can not open a similar business within a 25 mile radius for 6 months after I would leave.
