Paypal really safe and secure?

J

I have received an offer for my iMac £200 more than what i asked for it, and the person who has paid money into my Paypal account wants me to ship the item to her son in NIGERIA! HAHA!

I have heard about all the scams, so i emailed Paypal and they say the shipping address is legit and the funds have been drawn from her account and pending into mine? I know people have been burnt by this and i have kindly refused to go ahead and now Paypal are saying if i don't send them proof of deliver within 48 hours they will suspend my account!

Is this the right way to go? I need to stump up out of my own money shipping to NIGERIA and i am very wary!

Please can anyone advise? If i refund the money, surely they cannot suspend me?

DO NOT DO IT!!

Check your actual paypal account and you will see there is no deposit made.

Did you receive an email from paypal? Look further into it, its not from paypal, its a scam! Althought looks very real.

I was offered 150 more for my blackberry and was very wary. The buyer said that when i shipped the product and emailed them the shiopping number they would pay into account.

Caused me loads of problems as i am still being billed by ebay for the fees for the fake buyers from Nigeria!

Read it not once, twice and thrice then verify physical presence.

Also watch out for sending them a signed letter of agreement to sell, the bigger con artists pay the money into your bank account and then direct debit it back out via a front company same day. Right after you checked the cash was there...

I get five requests a week at least for condoms to be sold to countries in this 'zone' and the response is, delete delete delete.

Hold on... you say the paypal email is legit? Why would paypal want any proof of delivery? Surely it's up to you if you want to cancel the transaction? And why would anyone give you £200 more than the asking price if it wasn't fraud.
What the scammers usually do is pay by stolen credit card then ask for the £200 back which you can't get back when the credit card is reported stolen.

the very fact someone is offering £200 more than the asking price would be enough for me to ignore or delete whatever message or both. In the event that anything like this is genuine, it'll become obvious over time that this is so. I do zero tolerance on all this stuff, if it looks 0.0001 dodgy, I delete and forget it...

Please read the email i have just received from Paypal...Do you think this is legit? The email was [email protected]

Dear Jason Fisher,

It is important we know the status of the item bought by one of our clients Jennifer Foley, otherwise legal action may be taken against you since you have not e-mail us the shipment tracking number or scanned receipt of shipment from the post office.

We believe you entered into agreement by requesting money through PayPal from the buyer, therefore failure to complete the transaction through PayPal by emailing us a valid shipment tracking number or copy of the postage receipt, you are violating PayPal users agreement in an act of the 1999 PayPal Law in collaboration with the Law Enforcement Agencies.

You are mandated to ship the merchandise to the buyer and email us the proof of shipment on or before the next 48hours, failure to do so would result to the suspension of your PayPal account and involvement of the Police for violating PayPal instructions and users agreement in an act of the 1999 PayPal Law in collaboration with the Law Enforcement Agencies.

We are ensuring to make PayPal a safer place, therefore we need to set confidence in all our users.

PayPal authority sincerely request you to ship the merchandise to the buyer and email us the proof of postage on or before the next 48hours to enable us release the funds to your account or you will face the consequences of LEGAL ACTION.

This is done in other to protect both party against the ongoing internet fraud activities.

With more than 147 million accounts worldwide, we are a leading online payment method you can trust.

We are highly sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Thanks,

What a load of crap.

Is the money actually in your Paypal account?
If a dispute is opended, there's not a hope in hell that you can verify that the parcel arrived assuming it reaches its destination.

Refund the money and take the negative feedback. Open new eBay account.

Hi can you right click on your email and view the properties and source and post it here then we'll know for sure.

It is important we know the status of the item bought by one of our clients Jennifer Foley, otherwise legal action may be taken against you since you have not e-mail us the shipment tracking number or scanned receipt of shipment from the post office.

There's no way paypal would personally add a clients name to an email like this.

Oh come on.

Surely you've realised it's a scam? Did you check the E-mail and its origin or anything? People can easily send E-mails with a different sender address. If you find the properties of the E-mail, you will see the real address it is sent from.

Just look at the E-mail. It has numerous grammatical errors. PayPal law?

It's blindingly obvious this is a scam which is in no way affiliated with Paypal itself. I'm amazed it's still being questioned by people.

Scam, Scam, Scam!

Paypal.com is often hi-jacked, and copied by using a redirect to the scam website. Seen it many times before. I went onto paypal seperately without using the links and they verified it as a scam.

It was only because I was curious why the web address in the address bar read as paypal.com/paypalcom.us

Now, Paypal is owned by Ebay - Ebay also own Gumtree.

They are using the platform to advertise the scam, which would suggest they are aware of the su=ituation - so why would they try and force you to go ahead in a payment that they have told people not to use?

They certainly do not use full names in the mail and would use a refernce number/transaction number arther than a 'you sold jo bloggs an item, so send it'

It is a scam, report it and move on - don'y forget to run spyware and anti-virus through to check for loggers etc.

Stretchy thanks for the link. However on that link it states the following:-

How to avoid this scam:
• PayPal does not hold funds until an item is sent.
• Beware of fake PayPal emails - always check with PayPal if you are unsure.
• Always trade face to face when buying items on Gumtree.

The first one is untrue as they do hold funds until 21 days or until you send them delivery details.

Thanks for the link mate.

Your bigger problem is if you've clicked on any fake link sites and compromised your Paypal login details. So, don't forget about it yet. Go into your Paypal account (not via the email) and change your password ASAP.

The email sent was so poorly worded it had fake all over it in the first sentence, never mind the 'President' business.
