Does anyone know if there are any free plugins on WordPress where I can create a membership form, where the user fills out the form and then pays for a yearly subscription etc?

It's not a plugin for website membership - ie they aren't signing up for additional content on the website.

I'm guessing they will just sign up and then they will be contacted by email to confirm information etc.

Charge Rabbit is an app that works for shopify and runs recurring purchases / subscriptions etc...

Loads of ways to do this. Paypal for example has a subscription option. All you need to do is add the button to the site.

Have you considered some software specifically designed for this purpose rather than WordPress which is a hacked blog platform?

It has moved on a bit. It sort of stopped being a blogging platform years ago.

In any case, I thought the op wanted the subscription service as a bolt on to an existing site rather than being the sole function of the site.

I wouldn't say so, having setup WooCommerce recently it still centres around blog posts and anything else is a plugin.

It may be fine if the site has other WP functionality though.
