Landline provider...

Hi, I have started a new business (I have a lot of experience in the field).

I feel that a business looks more reputable if it has a landline number instead of just a mobile.

Can anyone advice on what seems best? I was thinking of a 020 number or another service number.

Also what seems to be a good online platform, as I noticed there are a few?

I use Tamar - it just diverts a landline number to your mobile and costs about £5-10 a month depending on the package you choose.

I think you're right - I still avoid dialling mobiles where possible; and as far as our own go we don't even have a decent signal! - Go for a number appropriate to your chosen location; and avoid 08 or even 03 numbers as people can sometimes be unclear about what they are (much as they might be with mobiles)....

We've used Vonage for many years, who provide us with a VOIP service and local (0131 in our case) telephone numbers that 'piggy back' onto the broadband connection. In our case we chose to have an adapter than normal desktop phones just plug into... And we have quite transparent voicemail and call-forwarding facilities that work well. - I suspect we could get cheaper, but the service has been exceptionally good.

The research still shows that people associate landline numbers with an established business although there are exceptions - plumbers, electricians or anybody that's expected to work on their own away from base. People also know what 01 and 02 numbers are and they're often in their calling plans so they'll call them without worrying about cost.

As to what number group to choose, obviously if your service is local, choose a local number. Otherwise it doesn't matter much. 02 is popular for those who think there's qudos in having a London number - like us
