Is PayPal Dead?

Paypal now accounts for around 15-20% of our weekly sales. As a combined total Apple Pay and Google Pay now make up more than 25% and credit/debit makes up the rest.

Less than 2 years ago, PayPal was 40%+ and probably 60% or more 6 or 7 years back.

Is anyone experiencing more success with PayPal or is it in serious decline across the board?

I work with a lot of overseas clients and PayPal is still a preferred method of transferring funds.

I wish it was, hiking up their fees all the time, not refunding fees for refunds, always siding with the purchaser even when you give clear evidence.

We try to use it as little as possible, but sadly it appears to be going strong.

The shift is good for you, isn't it - less costs!

There are still a lot of people who prefer to use it, so definitely keep it there as an option.

Paypal is one of if not the worst payment processor out there,
    customer support is non existant.
when disputes occur, they almost always side with the buyer.
You will find many horror stories where they have suspended people's accounts and stolen all their money because they jumped to some wrong conclusion about their business or transactions being dodgy.

So at the very least, don;t leave much money in your Paypal account, transfer it our regulalry.

but I need to get customers to select the correct option at the checkout.
Why not just switch the old option off (assuming it is a payment plugin...)

Usually it's not that simple because there may be existing subscriptions with an old option.

I have 3 PayPal options active on my own site for this very reason. Can't switch off as it will risk old subscriptions. But I do hide them and would recommend to DontAsk

I have disabled PayPal Express but the way I believe it works is that the new plugin allows direct card entry, rather than going to your PayPal account and selecting card rather than PayPal funds. I need to allow both of these, but the former is a lower fee.

I use them as a card payment provider (the customer doesn't know it is PayPal), but they can also choose Express if they are a PayPal user, which is the real question. So, putting aside any PayPal-enabled options like vanilla card payments, GPay, Apple Pay etc, I'd estimate the people who choose to use Paypal is maybe 20-25%, down from maybe 50-60% a few years ago. They've lost market share to Apple and Google.

    Worst Payment method
Depends on how you use it. For me it works very well and for some clients the only practical way to transfer money to the UK.
