Importing from outside the eu

I'm looking at importing items from outside the eu to resell in the uk. What things do I need to consider in doing so?

Please be careful if you import branded product from outside the European Economic Area (EU plus Switzerland, Norway and Iceland) as, if you resell under the brand name and it's a registered trade mark here, you can find yourself guilty of trade mark infringement - even if you have purchased genuine product!

Quality.
You need to be one hundred percent happy with the supplier.
To generalise: the Chinese and especially brazilians and probably many others have a well deserved reputation for sending first rate items first time and then their quality control goes to pot and you get duds. it is vey easy with small margins to go bust having to replace 10% of the goods and not being ably to return them to source for a refund.
Make sure you have someone checking before they leave and quality control sorted out.

Another issue I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is that many branded manufacturers will not support their products if obtained in say Asia or the USA but sold into Europe. Be very careful as you'll be lumbered with product that you legally have to replace but cannot then send back to the manufacturer.

It's unfair but its the way they do it!

A fair point, a lot of people get stung for parallel importing.
