HSBC for Business - Not a Chance
I have banked with HSBC for years , both personal and businesses .

Well on 23rd November i sent $ 508 US dollars to China to pay for a New Prototype product i want to sell both in UK and Spain, it is agreed that if i like the new Model i can have exclusive sales rights if i buy the Quantity etc..

So via Internet Banking i send $ 508 US Dollars over to there Bank in China, didnt give it a second thought assume its all on its way and done and dusted ..

a few days later i get a phone call ..
"hello this is HSBC blah blah blah , the reason we are ringing we have been asked for more info from the USA on the transaction, " so i say what you on about (this guy speaks the usual slight English but is obvious in India or somewhere ) well he says they have asked for the following ..

So i say what the hell you on about ? as i have done loads of transactions with China on Container purchases etc in the past and never had any problems ..

Well i have a request here with things they need to know before sending the funds . At which point you tell them to send the Money its My Money FFS etc etc . In my normal dont take any crap way
coffeenews5.gif

So he tells me its International Law !!!! Well never heard so much crap in my life etc i tell him but after a few minutes i say come on then lets have a laugh
new_argue.gif

So , What is the full name of the Company the money is going to , so i drag out the proforma Invoice and tell him ..
Next, What is the product i am buying ? So again i explain as best i can .
Next, What vessel is the product going on , Now dont be so stupid the things not even made yet its a prototype . Well he says they are asking , so tell me how do i know its not me making it is it ???
Next, Will this Consignment be going via , Cuba , Iran , Iraq and a few other places he mentioned ? Now how the heck would i know i am NOT the Captain am i ? which he agrees and laughs .. Stupid question right ...
Next, Is this Item going to UK or Spain ? I tell him Spain , ok where in Spain ? I tell him The paradise island Mallorca ..
So if its going to Mallorca is there a reason why a UK based Company is buying it ? yes its my UK Company and i want it to go to Mallorca right
angry.gif
starting to get the hump again now ...

So i say we are talking 500 dollars here about £ 300 FFS its my money and i will send it where the heck i like .. He says its not me its the new regulations we have to follow ..

So we eventually get back to the questions,

Next, Is it for my own use or for resale ? So i try and explain its a for me its a product i may be launching at which point if i like it i will sell them and bring over in Bulk although God knows what a nightmare thats likely to be using you Dickheads right !!

A Few more stupid questions which i now forget was asked , and then he says well i will put the form back to them .. If theres a problem what should i do ? I say if theres any problems tell me , send my money back to me and i will get a proper bank to send the money ..

Next thing my China guy tells me still had no money this is now 12th December .. so i ring HSBC they say its in China , so i tell my China contact to check his Bank etc ...

He reports back 2 days later there is nothing in China from me ..

Back to HSBC , Now they tell me its still in HSBC New York USA !!!! I am not amused as you can imagine , so i blow my top ..As the last Guy said China its in China already !!!!!!!...

Right i want my money put back in my account now , . And a lot of angry words are said as you can imagine..

I get back in touch with my China Guy who is not amused and now says his Bosses will not let me have exclusive agency as they have lost all confidence in me !!!!

So HSBC have cost me big time ...

Now as you can imagine i am just about to flip .. i get nobody from HSBC ring or reply to my emails and messages , all i have had is my manager advise its down to the International HSBC side and she has no control or say there ..

Its now 23rd December - 1 month later and still HSBC have my Money and not a reply or word from anyone .

So HSBC for International Business NOT in a million years . absolute nightmare .

stole my money and charged me £ 17 to send it and not a word from anyone. amazing. Cost me what could of been a good new Business.

Can you imagine if it had been say 30k on a new business , and HSBC adopt this leave the money in USA HSBC and keep it philosophy !!
It would finish the Business before its started !!!!!!

They are nothing but Theives in disguise ,in my book ..

And after Xmas all my accounts will be moving ...

so what would you do ??

There are a lot of Companies doing business with China... They seem to be sending money ok.. else we would not have such an influx of Chinese goods into the UK:)
And.. I am sure that HSBC Bank has been used too.

So.. the problem must be at your end.. and could perhaps be sorted out in a civil manner. Just because you had some bloke with an Indian accent.. you probably gave him a hard time. ( I assume this from reading your many other posts.. perhaps wrongly).

HSBc are a large Bank.. and would not give anyone a runaround for a measly US$508.

IMHO

as far as I know.. all Dollar amounts transit the USA branches anyway.. for any Bank.

You must surely have a relationship Manager who you could approach right at the start of this? Is their pre-requisite in life to sort out these minor irritations quickly and quietly!

I can understand your frustration, but the thing that would tip the balance for me, would be my own manager not intervening on my behalf. A "Nothing to do with me" attitude doesn't cut it.

Can you go over her head?

I wasnt that bad with the Guy he even admitted a lot of it was a crock of rubbisha ..

Its not even so much the fact about them wanting to know why its going there , although i have never heard of it before ..

Its HSBC just NOT interested in replying or anything that has niggled me the most .. so they can just keep your money and not return it and not say a word.

HSBC must have Billions in there secret stashpile.. of stolen money ..

And lets be honest if they use the money laundering rubbish, would a money laundering operation fence about £ 300 LMAO

This could happen to any HSBC business .. and like i said imagine if its serious money ..

And you cannot speak to anyone of importance and you do NOT even get a word back ..
4 weeks and still not a word from them ????? disgraceful ...

You do say that you have banked with HSBC for years!!!

One blip.. and you move accounts..LOL

I have to now , i told them if they do not reply or speak with me by today then all my HSBC dealings will be moved . and we are talking some serious money in my accounts trust me .. So it was a final straw and i do not make idol threats..

You must surely have a relationship Manager who you could approach right at the start of this? Is their pre-requisite in life to sort out these minor irritations quickly and quietly!

I did that straight away and says cannot do anything its International !!! So i said not impressed and what use is that etc..

Can you go over her head?

I have tried like i said they just say looking into it a response can take upto 8 weeks !!!!! Pathetic isnt it..

I dont know whats gone wrong with them but NOT the HSBC i used to use for sure ..

Rather than worry about the bank I'd be trying to recover the working relationship with the supplier in China.

Their confidence has been knocked and any chance of this new venture succeeding will be 100% dependant on having them onboard.

Get a letter from the bank detailing the delays and explaining that they were caused by their procedures etc and forward a copy to them - give them some evidence you are legit.

Then, worry about the bank.

The Contact manager knows as i have kept him in the loop , but i can tell damage has been done . if you know what i mean ?

I am wondering how far a legal Compensation against HSBC would fair ? As at best they are incompetent , telling me its firstly in China .. when it never was etc..

You are talking about Businesses in China... they won't lose much sleep over US$508.
They understand how banks work.... more than most people I know.

One has an ongoing dialogue.. and it works.

I also have NO faith in HSBC now, if they keep hold of and make a fuss on $ 508 imagine sending 50K over with them ??

Scarey .. :(

So until i get new banks online i wouldnt dare use HSBC for anything more than online shopping ..

Had a reply from email i made to the Banking Ombudsman ,, says will look into it .. so that could be interesting ..

I'd be fuming as well Pete, I moved from HSBC a few months ago as no one was prepared to get down to earth about business banking and just kept blaming the computers. A right load of bullocks!

I tried to open a personal account with HSBC a couple of months ago.

I filled in the form on the internet. Then they sent me a letter asking for ID - fair enough.

However, the ID they wanted was strange. Mainly stuff that either couldn't be sent through the post or letters from the dole office.

Given I'm not on the dole, the latter was a non-starter. So, I trekked along to their office in Edinburgh (Hanover St).

After waiting to see someone, I got some plonker who, rather than verifying my ID, wanted to argue that I wasn't allowed the account I'd already been approved for.

(he also kept telling me I wasn't allowed a branch account... even though I repeatedly told him I didn't want one)

So, no HSBC account for me.

I guess I'll have to find another place to put my money.

(that's all I wanted - to spread my cash around a few different banks, so if one went down, I'd still have access to money)

Steve

PS Drayton Bird wrote a blog post about HSBC that was quite funny. I can't publish the url (too naughty), but here's the tinyurl link: http://tinyurl.com/8sgclj

Maybe the person you're paying it to or some other factor has tripped up some money laundering/anti-terrorism blah blah system. Or maybe you ordered a Cat Stevens CD in the past or something.

Did you send the money from a business account to a personal account in China? These can be rejected due to tax evasion measures by the Chinese Government. You can only send personal to personal or business to business.

But one incident isn't worth moving bank over.

Business to Business .. Yea like we are going to do a tax evasion or money laundering on $ 508 US Dollars

Its not the Queens English its someone in India called Fred whos name isnt Fred pretending to be English and a conversation is a nightmare :(

So try explainning prototypes and stuff to Fred cause it sure as hell is damn hardwork

I am so annoyed with HSBC as they do NOT reply when they say they will, seem to now think its ok to steal $ 508 US Dollars and charge me £ 17 as well , and then just leave it in there Bank in New York for there next Xmas party or similar

Imagine if it was 50k sent the same would apply so HSBC for International trade not now .. Lost all trust in them ..

I've not spoken to one call centre worker in India who didn't have excellent command of the English language.

And the likely reason he calls himself Fred is because he has to deal with xenophobic idiots who can't cope with more than one syllable.

People who cry about not being able to understand someone in India are either stupid or liars.

Why don't you hear of anyone complaining about all the call centres in Northern Ireland, Scotland or Newcastle? If you can understand English in those accents I don't see how it's so hard to understand someone in Bangalore.

I left hsbc a few years back after a shocking experience. The business was very very busy, I had setup a second access permission in my local branch so that my then assistant could access our account whilst I was working overseas. However the branch manager had not remembered to the security feature designed to stop two seperate IP devices logging into the onlice banking area at once...

The end result was that as soon as we both logged in, from different locations, the account was frozen. Back in england the next day I was on the phone for about 3 hours trying to get them to unlock it, apparently there was some sort of problem and I got passed around a lot. Everytime I was promised a call back within the hour it never happened. Everytime I called them I had to pretty much start from scratch. ARGGHHHH!!!

Eventually they admitted that the branch manager had set the account up in such a way that it was not possible for them to generate a new entry login - my account was in limbo, accesible by no-one pending repair by one of their banking technicians. Important to note that I had always been deeply dissapointed with my branch manager in general, he was shocking, scruffy and basically thick as plank.

The main failing here was my branch manager of course. But the most annoying bit for me was the hopelessness of the staff I had to deal with on the phone. They seemed to lack common sense, english language (It's next to impossible to explain anything complex on the phone in pigeon english) and above all else they didn't seem to know who to turn too when things got complicated. I was furious.

After 4 days the account was accesible again, I was greeted with a charge for not making payment to our hsbc charge card... naturally this was a result of hsbc not letting me access my own account. I visited my branch manager and asked him why he had not pro-actively suspended all charges on my account as soon as he had realised HE had caused a problem. He should have done this straight away, without me asking and without even knowing if any charges would be applied. The coward waffled on for ages before eventually admitting he could have done this and just had not thought to do so. I closed my account there and then, demanded he transferred all monies to my new natwest account.

To finish him off I presented him with copy of the letter that had gone to their HR department detailing his failings throughout the episode, and before it. I had made sure that everything I suspected he should have done but had not was detailed. In other words everything required to make the big brass pick up the phone and ask him some very pertinent questions.

Natwest are just as hopeless at times of course, all big corps suffer the same. But I can at least say that with natwest its easier to get a local human being involved. crucially its possible to quickly speak to a person with sufficient power to solve problems. This is where hsbc really fails. when its working right its great, when it goes wrong its impossible to speak to anyone with enough broad banking experience to sort it out.

Most Indian call centre staff do indeed speak very good day to day english. The problem is we tend only to need to call them if something has gone wrong. It's when you enter into a complex discussion or problem solving session that their English simply isn't broad enough. And of course you would expect nothing less. They use the same small vocabulary day in, day out for a few days - then I call up and use a double barreled word they have never heard since they studied english at school.

I don't blame them of course, I'm sure they work very hard. It's the banks failing. I should expect to be able to talk to someone with a suitably broad vocabulary when ever I need to call. Afterall, the bank sends me small print updates all the time containing forms of word that very few people can interperate properly. They assume I'm either a solicitor or have access to one. When I call I assume perfect english speaking or to be passed to someone that can if need be.

The main problem there is the limited authority given to contracted call centres. I've been with HSBC for 9 years and if there is anything unusual or more complicated than a standard query they always put me through to UK HSBC who have the power to make those changes or access certain information.

I've called UK call centres and got nowhere because they are powerless to do anything. It can be just as frustrating. But you can thank outsourced call centres for one thing - ever since, UK call centres have improved ten fold.

been with Nat West for ages and the main thing I like about them is that they answer their phones fast and you are talking to someone UK based. I've never had a big problem with the Bank but in the event I do, I'm positive things will get resolved quicker because of this...

Or if you happen to know all the staff at your branch as your ex used to be their boss, then of course you know all the direct dial numbers of the relevant people!

That or be my mother - if you have lots of dosh in your account, you get mobile and personal manager who actually answers the phone first time.

All of course with HSBC who of course were so much better when they were the Midland Bank - as the youngsters on here, now scratch their heads and wonder what language I am speaking!!

I have hearing issues sometimes on the phone and yes overseas call centres rarely get my name pronounced correct, as after all, only us English have the harsh G sound, but heck I couldnt say their names without a few goes - so what the hell .... anyhow, I waffle - but I can understand them and have no difficulty at all.

Its HSBC i dont care if its in Timbuktoo , HSBC have my money get it back .. and still not a word ...

So what hope would a new HSBC customer have with money being sent overseas ???

I can't believe that you let your business manager off so easily Pete. I had a problem with Lloyds last year when a dd from my private account was transfered to my business one. They had the details in writing they were delivered tp my personal manager by hand but somehow the dd didn't kick in and a fine from the credit card also with Lloyds.

Then came all the waffle. I would mind these guys had offices next door to one another. The solution. I knew that started the 2nd round of appointmets at 2 and there were a couple of people waiting outside when the both turned up. I hi-jacked the pair of them with a sharp . "Right in my office now"

You should have seen the look on their faces. It only took 3 words then "DD FIX IT and they did even phone my saying thay had paid a credit into my account to cover the fine.

This all a bit long winded I know but the point is that all too often it's not the bank but the quality of so called bank managers these days. It's worth trying another branch then and when you find a good manager follow them a they move from branch to branch. It doesn't affect you locally. In the meantime. Nail the one you have. The whole world is international now and even theAsian run corner shop knows how to trasfer funds. Why the bloody hell can't he or she. Go letter in hand then and say 'FIX IT' and in 7 days.

Robert

BTW. Mentioned the other day. All BOS business banking now being run by Llloyds business managers.

We had a similar experience with a payment sent to one of our Pakistani suppliers last year, the payment got held up pending a load of additional and some very odd questions... communication broke down between the receiving bank in Pakistan and HSBC resulting in our payment taking an extra month to reach our suppliers account.

Having said that, I understand their reasons for asking the questions.

I've been very impressed with HSBC since moving our accounts to them a year ago. Coming from Abbey where good service is a paid-for extra, HSBC have been almost faultless in their handling of our business accounts and I would recommend them to anyone.

I dont make many payments abroad but have dealt with China a few times having to transfer payments from my HSBC business account. My Business Manager did it for me and it all went through ok. I suppose it just depends if you have any problems and who you get on the phone to deal with them. In there defence I have always found HSBC to be very helpful and have dealt with any issues swiftly. My business manager has been great when needed.
Good luck anyway Pete at which ever way you go but I have found it's more difficult dealing with other countries because cultures are so different and although sometimes we might think we are saying the right things they simply dont understand. That is annoying, but another challange for us.

Pete,

Sorry to hear a mountain made out of a mole hill.
I've been importing and exporting to mainland China, HK & Singapore.
Using your business bank to obtain currency at a fair rate is impossible as they have bonuses to generate.
I would highly recommend Travelex, where you simply phone up quoting your client number and you can get realtime forex quote and if you like what you hear you simply book it.
They will then charge only £10 to send money overseas to account details you give them. Cheaper than any bank.
They will then ask you to send a BACS paymenent to them quoting your deal number, once they receive your funds, Travelex send your funds out.
It takes 3 to 4 days maximum and never a problem.
Ask their rep. to call on you and take it from there.
Good luck.
TC
