There are no sites that you can launch and leave. They all need regular maintenance and monitoring if you are going to make any money.

So you need to consider what it is you want to sell: products or services.

How are you going to market the website, who are your target customers?

Who is going to build you the site? How are you going to monitor it's progress? How are you going to pay for the site?

Just like any other business you need to do some planning.

You could set up a free site tomorrow but you wouldn't make a penny unless are selling the right goods and services to the right people using the right marketing methods.

OK so you want a dropshipping site. That's where all your orders go to a warehouse and they do everything for you.

You need to find a dropshipper that stocks the products you want to sell. They will provide a file with all the product information. you need to get a site built and then import the data. That's you ready to roll.

Now comes the hard bit. You need to optimise and work on the site to make sure it converts. You will need to spend time and money promoting the site and you need to be prepared to wait a long time until you make any money at all. The reason is that there are thousands of people all doing exactly the same as you and all fighting for a thin slice of a very small pie.

There are ways of putting up websites which make a small amount of fairly automated income however you really need skills in web areas and online marketing to make this a feasible venture.

It is not something that I would recommend a 'newbie' to web development and online marketing attempt and even with those skills it takes a lot of hard work and a touch of luck to begin to make anything resembling a decent living from it.

If what you wanted to achieve was possible then I feel a hell of a lot more people would be doing it.

If you are looking to create passive income, you probably want to consider buying a website selling an ebook or offering a digital download of some sort. However, beware of the numbers that sites like Flippa post about the financials of a site up for sale. Seldom is it verified and based on incredible descriptions that sellers state about their websites, you wonder why then they are selling in the first place.

I agree that you should be wary of Flippa sites. Its like everything really, there will be decent things for sale and other sites which are not so good.

If something looks to be good to be true then it usually is, hence a site saying that it generates $1200 USD per month in passive revenue up for sale for less than $4000 screams that there is something wrong with it.

You will see the genuine sites which can earn $200 - $300 per month actually sell for a far larger multiple.

Hi Rbeech,

Another site you could try for buying websites is called website broker.*

Flippa*has unfortunately become a place where unscrupulous web designers create websites by the dozens and try and sell them for a quick profit. *One way I recommend Flippa is if you want to learn about the process of buying a website and how the website is run, then you can spend 50 or 100 pounds to buy cheap website just so you can learn the entire process first * hand. *And at this moment Flippa is a bad place to buy or sell websites worth more than $50,000.*

Never take the numbers that the sellers claim at face value. Instead, a couple of tools which can help to you understand a sites profitability are SEMRush and doing your own keyword research for the keywords that the site is targeting. Those keywords may be in the domain name or obviously being targeted in the content of the website. Market Samurai is a fairly good tool, they have a free trial and lots of instructional videos on how to use it.*

And the rule of thumb is that if the website is showing less than six months of revenue, then it's just a bad idea. A website can make a few months of revenue based on a short-term trend.*

*You asked about a type of website which is not so labor-intensive to maintain? I found that information products are some of the lowest maintenance type of sites out there, as Shirish says. Make sure you choose a topic that you are genuinely interested in, or you won't be very successful. *If you find a website in which some of the functions are simple and repetitive, you might consider hiring a virtual assistant. For as little as four or 5 pounds an hour you can hire a full-time 40 hour a week VA from the Philippines. *Yes, they have speak English and yes, they are qualified.*

Information products distribution can be automated. For example, if you're selling an e-book then the entire electronic delivery can be completely automated. I don't recommend drop shipping, unless its a product that you particularly are in love with. There are a lot of potential downsides to drop shipping.*

Another type of site that can be good for passive income is a membership driven site where users pay to join/ access premium site sections etc..

I've built lots of these sites, community based for niche markets.
You can charge a one off fee to 'upgrade' in order to access members sections, or you can charge monthly, annually all recurring etc...

These are easy to manage as its all online work, no posting or even following up on orders for dropshipping. drop shipping is good, but you are still liable for the product, sale, delivery if anything goes wrong or is disputed.

Only thing with membership sites is content. Eventually, the aim is for members to submit their own but you have to set the ball rolling to a level that people are willing to pay to upgrade.

Helps if the site them / subject / content is something you are interested in, as you will have to spend some time on the site, especially at first. Niche markets are always good.

Forget trying to be the next facebook, or general 'dating' site or that kind of thing, all been done before. Niche is always better.

tbh, it's not likely that you will be able to simply buy a site, plug it in and walk away with passive income.. .everything takes some work!

But, it can be rewarding. i've setup a number of sites that work for me, little and often. Collectively they work together.

If you need help with a community based site, let me know, happy to help where I can!

I'd recommend Flippa but bear in mind most sites on there are junk and claim to earn nothing like they actually do. The decent sites that are worth investigating tend to get a lot of interest.

It's never as simple as buying a site that earns money and sitting on the passive income.

I would think more about building some sort of niche content site and taking it from there.

Not necessarily. (You seem to suggest that the only option to a site that ships is a site that drop ships. )

There are content sites that make money from contextual ads.

There are forums that monetise UGC.

There are CPM and CPC and lead gen options - affiliate sites!

There are more than one or two ways websites profit without shipping or dropshipping.

am looking to buy a website where i dont rearly have to do much to keep it running and make a few pounds on the side as i already have a full time job was wandering if any one could give me a idea where to star as i dont rearly no what i am looking for.
There's at least one good specialist forum discussing the buying and selling of profit making websites ;)

I'm making an assumption that you're looking for a low value (less than £2K) investment, so unless you've got a really good grounding in SEO, I'd recommend putting your plans on hold until you do - here's why.

An ok site costing you around £1K will generate around £80 in monthly net profit (very rough generalisation). Going off what's available at that price range, you'll more than likely buy something which makes money from advertising (adsense) or an affiliate product.

Spending money on outsourced SEO is great if you already know what you're doing, but can be a waste if you leave an untrained person to their own devices. The fact is, spending money on SEO will only give you an increase relative to what the site is already earning (unless you find a gem with lots of hidden potential), and even 50% on £80 is still only £40 - you'll probably spend more than this in outsourcing the SEO.

The best way to make money with lower end sites is to

    1) Hang onto them for a long time - so you'll need something with a little history to help reassure you it will continue to perform well.

    2) Do your own SEO to save costs. It's not very time effective but if this is about profit, it's often the only way to break even or make a profit within a two year window.

Learning SEO first is a great way to analyse the merits of the site your looking at buying, and understand what to outsource when you get to that stage.

Here's a list of 35 marketplaces and forums (from 2010 so it's due an update)

    flipfilter.com/blog/2010/10/01/how-to-find-websites-for-sale-35-sites-ranked/

I'd also give a glowing recommendation to experienced people forums for industry specific advice - experienced-people.net/forums/forum.php

Drop shipping isn't an affiliate website... you would still need to process orders, provide customer service etc. on top of marketing etc the only difference is, like the name suggests, you don't hold the stock.

It depends on the drop shipper their system etc. but with most, you promote your website/products, take the money, order it from the drop shipper with address to send it to, pay the drop shipper, and where applicable provide after sales and returns.

It actually is MORE work than if you held the items yourself! (For a small part-time business anyway) The difference is not holding the stock so don't have to pay for storage etc. this cuts into margins as unless you are selling volumes (you wont as you would give up the job) you wont renegotiate better deals.

Too many drop ships services are less "business deal" but more "off-the-shelf solutions", so many you fill in application form online... you wont get a good deal. Forget RRP... everything these days are sold below the suggested RRP - and many drop shippers actually run online businesses selling the items for less than what you can get them for.

Just to add the key is marketing. Both offline and online.

So many different websites offer "white label" versions. Take dating sites as an example, you use the database of some millions of users... but straight away you are building up their network membership with little advantage for you. Most people seriously dating, register on numerous websites... could be 10 over 5 years... they will recognise these while label sites and members. You do not want your customers to understand the market greater than you - it kills any attempt at sales.

You will get the: 900 visitors will be 30 registered users (free - no money for you) where just one converts to membership. Of course there might be 900,000 in a year... but you lose, the network wins boosting the number of overall profiles... and encouraging other mugs to pay for such pointless website. Oh and of course their nice cut in whatever you do manage to sell.

It is the same for premium rate telephone lines... There are so many services on cheaper 0845/0870 lines, so the £1.50 per minute 0906 no longer rakes much money in. You need an established brand and customer base to stand a chance.

Of course, these "easy" businesses MAY make someONE £40,000 a year but to the average person... they will make no money at all.

You either must have something new or a new way of doing something. It could be something really old and established but targeted to a new market or location. The latter can be very fast moving, where competitors put you out of business within weeks.

To finish, no one is interested in setting you up to make a tidy sum... just looking at ways to package an inadequate product, to sell you the benefits of being rich... its them who is making the money, not you! Unless you are certain what you can do, I say stay clear. Many of the turnkey solutions for such can be profitable, if you stick endless effort into marketing... but if you are giving up a £30k job to make £35k profit without paying you a wage... you will find out the business costing you more than what you getting from it when you work out your costs and taxes etc.

This is not including the obvious con artists waiting to rip people off.

    Hello,

From what you're saying it sounds like we could help. At Clever Business Websites we provide a low cost web package for just £25 a month, which includes web design and ongoing site updates. There are no upfront costs, so it won't set you back when you're getting started. We can also advise on the right keywords to optimise your site on Google and help you with getting these keywords into your site.

Apologies if this seems like a sales pitch. Let me know if you're interested - 01865 989 899.

    Thanks,

Hi, i'm really new to this so dont know if i'm in the right place to start with but here goes..... I have found a company that makes turnkey websites... I am potentially interested in buying one or possibly several eventually. I have no experience with websites however the company "abcdesignstudios" claim to do a lot of the work for you and I'm happy to learn the rest. I am full time employed currently looking for a way to eventually get out of my job. I am not looking to get rich over night as I know that wont happen, however I am looking for a feasible small business to invest in that could eventually see me not rich... but self sufficient.

    My question to you wonderful people is;

    a. do any of you have experience is turnkey websites and what would your advice be?

    b. how much revenue can one site make when marketed properly ie the website is already set up with amazon uk and amazon us. It can be set up with google adsense too - would there be any others you could advise?

    c. Is this really feasible or am I going to be disappointed? Say the website cost £375 - would I be able to make my money back or would I be better off elsewhere?

Thanks so much in advance for any guidance you can offer :) I look forward to a response :)

99% you're going to be disappointed.

While buying a template is an easy, low cost option for getting into business on the web, most of the work isn't in the template, it's in building the business.

Successive site-flipping "gurus", Make Money Online ebook sellers and even marketplaces where websites are sold have all been talking up the "opportunity" with buying these templates and converting them to profitable sites for keeping (or selling on at a profit).

All of those people are making money from trying to convince you to jump in. Some of their claims seem very believable, but don't be fooled. The indisputable fact is that most of these templates sold to aspiring entrepreneurs like you end up being abandoned after a few months. This is something I've been saying for years (on my forums) - the wrong type of people have been herded into spending money on a false understanding of what it takes. Now proof is beginning to emerge and people are beginning to see that the emperor has no clothes.

Here's one blog post from a couple of days ago demonstrating that at least one-third of such sites get abandoned by their (originally) starry eyed owners. Bear in mind that the one-third figure grossly underestimates the problem as he's counting only those sites for which the registration dropped or the owner put the site into parking. Count all the other sites where the owner just gave up and you'll find that almost every single template site gets abandoned.

If you've already got experience running online businesses and/or building an online business from scratch, go ahead. But if you had this experience you wouldn't be asking the questions you did.

Thanks Clinton I guessed as much however thought I'd try the water. I am looking for an investment of some sort that will get me out of my current role and give me something to really get my teeth into whilst being able to match or beat my current salary. Hard work I know - of which I am not afraid of. Just need to find the thing that is going to work for me.

I'm not after a get rich quick scheme as I dont believe they exist but if you do have any tricks or suggestions you'd like to impart to a thriving 23 year old looking to do some good, I'd be very interested to hear them....

    Cheers

    There are only two ways:
    Start something yourself
Buy a successful business someone else started (the main subject on my forums)

Either option requires the acquisition of considerable knowledge. In the former case, the bulk of the skill to be developed is in building the business and making it profitable. In the latter case it's about properly assessing the opportunities to avoid the scams and land yourself a good business at a fair price. (It also takes a bit of capital)

Neither is easy. If you're willing to put in the work, choose one of the above routes and set about acquiring the skills first.

I'm not after a get rich quick scheme as I dont believe they exist
All the snake oil salesmen have cottoned on to the fact that most people know this. In an attempt to garner credibility they regularly and "honestly" "disclose" that their schemes aren't get rich quick schemes. This seems to result in more conversions for them.

Well my affiliate based adult dating site works for me. Your figures match my hits but your converts don't.

I must admit I don't market the site but it brings in around £200 pm at moment and I don't do anything.

Do you have something your interested in or passionate about. Build a blog or site based around that to get started. Write content in this area that you think would be useful to other people.

Get your stats set up properly, then use those stats to drive what additional content you write, and start learning and applying SEO. Learn the ropes yourself using free tools.

If you dont learn the ropes you are likely to be tempted to buy all kinds of tools, packages and ebooks that will make you rich overnight (They almost never work or if they do involve ridiculous amounts of work).

At least once you have learned the basics, you can then go and buy services from other people from a position of knowledge. If you dont know what they are selling you, you have no idea if you are gonna get ripped off or not.

That sounds excellent. Now can you do us a calculation for 1xAgent getting 0 Adverts per year?

Maybe if you revise your projection to one agent getting 4 adverts per day you could double your asking price!

Just as an example 1 x Agent getting 2 Adverts per day for 5 days will turn around 800 euros a week = 83,200 euros per year, half of which they receive in commission,
The Website receiving the other half, this is assuming they only get 2 x Adverts in the day.
We estimate the time taken to register the clients details and place the advert to be no more than 1 hours work for them, this is assuming that they only get 2 x adverts a day - they may get less they may get more, of course the more agents the more revenue it really comes down to multiplication.
We are therefore looking in the region of 35,000 euros ono.for the total ownership of the Website/ Back-up System and Databases etc.
We have a good amount of data available for any interested parties, this will tell them what the website is capable of achieving.
We look forward to hearing from you , and off course any input you wish to make.
    Kind Regards
