Ok... so alot of people might be getting bored with my seo questions for this specific topic. Birmingham Electrician,

Im focusing on this first after will be plumbing etc blah blah blah

It seems to me page 1 of google for that phrase Birmingham electrician is a mixture of directorys and Key word domains which play a part,

i registered on a vista template
http://www.candnbirminghamelectrician.co.uk/

Its crap i know but i was schooling myself on seo, it sits comfortably on page 5,

The page 1 of google fluctuates between the directorys and 3 keyphrase domains and every now and again a stupid american site.

There obviously is work coming from one of the sites as they have altered it recently and they run adwords alllll the time.
http://www.birminghamelectricians.vpweb.co.uk/
It goes against what people views on here are of copyright and the people on here who review peoples sites is it an anomaly :|

I have been playing around with www.electrician-birmingham.com its page 9 but will go page 5 easy when i fix the crap linkage,

But am i wasteing my time with that url? would i be better for my new site using the candnbirminghamelectrician.co.uk,

or reg'ing birminghamelectriciancandn.co.uk

opinions more than welcome

I was just thinking about more than 1 site,

But is there a rule like something like 80% can be the same but 20% has to be different?

There is a rough rule floating about to avoid duplicate content.

But I would make the sites sustantially different .

I to avoid any possibility of duplicate and 2 so that you can spread your net wider with more keywords for your cachement area.

It's not difficult to create non duplicate content, just take it a sentence, or even part of a sentence, at a time. You can also just open up theasaurus.com and change every second word :-)

These some free software, from memory 'dupfreepro', or similar, that helps you by showing two articles side by side and highlighting duplicate sentences. Also does checks online.

If you are targetting a UK audience it is MUCH better to use a .co.uk, UNLESS you have the exact match keyword domain (electricianbirmingham.com for example)

When i said ask me i was being sarcastic!!!!!! We employ a company to do our Adwords Campaign its not something you can "Play" with as it all costs ALOT of money...Time,Persistance,Patience,Relevent Content,Money,Hard Work,Monitoring...Google always change the goalposts its hard to keep up....Dont try too hard though or you might face legal action or worse still........somebody might instruct thier own IT company to take action!!!!
But think it was just a mistake on your part so am willing to leave it there...Good Luck with your SEO

Maybe if i do get the new site im working on and i get jobs i dont want i could pass them to you who knows but good luck to you also.

Livewire is more forgiving than I would have been.

If you really think that duplicating a Vistaprint site on the same platform is somehow going to achieve the same rankings as them, then it's time to hire a professional as you obviously have no clue what you are doing.

I put it together ages ago when I was learning, I have learnt a lot since then I had a site nearly on page 2,

There was no copyright issue with that what so ever, I merely changed the content as a gesture of goodwill As I have no use for it anyway. The percentage of words were well below the amount required for it to be a copyright issue,

So flauk thankyou for your input but itreally is not needed :p

Come on guys, give the guy a break, he was only trying to learn. Getting ideas from someone elses site and rewording them as a learning tool isnt a hanging offence!

Massey you have already stated in another post on here you "Copied" the site......You Did...Word For Word...But you have alot of learning to do Nicolas as you are only 22....Director of a Company at such a young age.....Was it a Christmas Present ??? Just wondered as it was late November Last year!! You have not changed the content its still running as was, untill it gets re-cached or you delete it. Personally as the Website owner I am not happy with your disregard and could not careless approach.
We have to Protect our Interests as a Company and will do so by whatever means we see fit. Livewire Group.

What does nearly on page 2 mean..........Page 3 I assume!!!! Get a life,Word your own Websites

Congrats - have you stopped learning now?

There was no copyright issue with that what so ever, I merely changed the content as a gesture of goodwill As I have no use for it anyway. The percentage of words were well below the amount required for it to be a copyright issue,

Plus you copied the design and layout.

So flauk thankyou for your input but itreally is not needed :p

Ok, continue with your scattergun approach and you might nearly reach page 1.

There are two defences for using copyrighted material: Public Interest and Fair Dealing. The Public Interest defence is not applicable here.

For Fair Dealing to apply: "Under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA), fair dealing is limited to the following purposes: research and private study (both must be non-commercial), criticism, review, and news reporting (s. 29, 30, 178). Although not actually defined as a fair dealing, incidental inclusion of a copyrighted work in an artistic work, sound recording, film, broadcast or cable programme doesn't infringe copyright."

Copying and pasting content from one commercial web site to another is thus not covered by Fair Dealing either. Thus it would seem that copyright has been infringed, and indeed that the infringement has been admitted.

This is not just aimed at Massey's copyright infringement, but also at others who might be confused by his claim that: " The percentage of words were well below the amount required for it to be a copyright issue".
I think he might be confusing Google's approach to duplicate content with Copyright Law. Obviously they are not the same.

There are no quick fixes-ours are ranked high because of time and because we spend lots of money with adwords.

Never think that if you spend a vast amount of money with google adwords it will get you to the top of the organic listings....it doesnt.

I have heard that google search and google adwords keep info from each other to prevent people paying there way to the top of the organic listings

Totally agree adwords don't help you at all in organic results - its just makes Google billions every year.

Organic results come from serious content relevant one way links and many other tactics! Adwords waste of money if you ask me, most people will click on and then off again.

What I meant was we are Top of the PPC because of budget and good keywords.....And around the top of organic listings because of time,Good Content,relevance....But still dont make the phone ring!!!!! We use one of the best teams in the business running our PPC and they do a good Job.

Why do most people click on then off again? Does it not depend on what business you are providing...In my case Emergency Electrician,Plumber etc.

Dawg duplicate content is a myth.

Darren are they might be doing a good job, but you need a site that converts, which is why I don't think I would be happy to run a ppc on a vista site,

I notice your ads are on the content network also which in my view is a waste of money.

I totally agree with you on this one

I believe people are getting too wise with web search results and they know if its at the top in a shaded box or if its down the right of the page its trying to sell me something I dont want.
Another factor with it is the way the eye focus's on the page, it will automatically focus on the organic listings, if they placed the PPC on the left side I am sure they would be more successful/popular

Could I just add for all you people who are thinking of PPC and more importantly paying for help with PPC so you can get to page 1, grab an add on called PPC webspy for Firefox, this not only gives me the Keywords the other company is using but the price they are paying per click, so all you need to do is use/alter a % of the keywords, 2£/p higher bid on PPC hey presto page 1 here we come.

its just makes Google billions every year.

The boffins need to pay their bills too.

Who am I to argue?

Google Webmasters

"In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results."

Maybe Google just forgot to update their own site. Or something.

Stating (or agreeing) that adwords is a 'waste of money' is an incredible generalisation. I suspect it varies with certain industries, but so far this month our adwords campaign has converted over £2400, with a total spend of around £120.

Not bad return eh?

It's all in the details. A mixture of good landing pages and a well set up adwords account (Steve G on here did ours). So many people expect to get instant results from setting up a few badly chosen keywords and pointing it to their poorly designed landing page.
