Flash on websites - fact or myth??

I have been told that having flash on your website is a total waste of time as google will not pick up on pages with flash.

Now correct me if im wrong, but is that not a myth put in place by designers who cant do flash? Granted flash doesnt get picked up, but its only text that gets picked up. So surely if the page has a fair amount of (repetitive ;) ) text then it should.

For example this is jam packed with flash yet it ranks 1, not that they dont pay to get it there, but im sure you get the jist.

Or is my point totally based on science fiction. :|

Flash makes a website look good if done well.
Flash websites can be optimised search "lpg london" look at tasso autogas
The disney site you refer to has flash on it but is not a flash website.

Google cannot read flash as it is an image.
Image cannot be read by google and need to be tagged so that it may be indexed.

IMO: flash is great for impressing visitors but should not be used to create a whole website unless you have loads of money to throw at marketing.

By the way spamming text is a black hat technique....not cool

I wish you would speak plain English mate......... what the hell does that mean? Is it some sort of geek speak? :|

Thanks for your first reply though, at least that one makes sense.

Forgot your a wolves supporter. I'll type slower for you :D

Spamming = repeating = multiple
Text = words made up of letters

spamming text = repeating words over and over again to get listed higher in google.:mad:

Black = a colour
white = another colour
Technique = the process used to acheive results
Black hat = a term for a technique used to achieve page one of google frowned upon and in some cases penalised.:(
White hat = Good technique :D
Penalised = removed from google indexed

Funny = this post :D

Thank you! A simple "yes it is geek speak" would have sufficed though. Patronising git. :D

There are other issues chippie...

Site loading time is really important, not just for visitors, also for ranking and flash can kick it hard

Flash is also a distraction from a conversion point of view unless it IS the message. And you need text to get the site to rank - so flash in place of text is a big no no.

That's a bit rich coming from a clog-wearing whippet breeder ;)

The two threads mentioned above give a pretty emphatic overview really.

I'll have you know i have a german rotwieller called Baileys who eats wippets for breakfast with a side order of mash.

And the shoes i wear testoni :p
Got 25% discount and worth every comfy penny.

OH and I support burnley and chelsea.

Burnley AND Chelsea?

Talk about sublime to the ridiculous.

Reminds me of the old joke:
How many Man Utd fans does it take to change a lightbulb?

Two - one to do the job and one to fetch it from his home in Surrey. :)

Don't think you quite grasped the gist of my post there.
Chelski are a long way from Lancashire.
Same as Surrey is a long way from Manchester.
Thankfully I follow neither of them.

Never heard of Testoni shoes btw, but then again I am hardly up to speed on fashionable footwear. Unfortunate brand name really - I first thought I read you wear Testicle shoes! :eek: :D

This technique was before but now Google don’t have much problem with flash. You can easily create flash to look your site more attractive.

Flash is not an "image", it is a complicated file format that can contain plain text, HTML mark up and a lot more.

Does Google Index Flash? Yes.

Disney's website uses Flash because it is appropriate to do so (cartoony games and stuff for kids), and they are popular because, well, it's Disney! The same design approach would be inappropriate for Business Link's website, for example.

Personally I'm not a fan of Flash (I don't regard it as an essential aspect of web design), but using it isn't the SEO-blight it used to be.

I personally hate flash websites,that is why I use flashblock on firefox, it stops it loading and I just move onto the next website that came up in the search for what I was looking for.

Ok not image GRAPHIC.
Read the rest and you'll understand the post.
There is a code you are referring to which acts like a tag.
And i was simplifying:D.

It has an enormous amount of authority back links too, so you can't really use Disney as a fair example.
Some other flash sites seem to do OK but I think with limited resources you are always going to be pushing uphill?

You should really learn to communicate in plain English and then you wouldn't have to constantly explain yourself!

Kidding.
Thought it was obvious with his technical knowledge that he understood.
Or may be just nit picking = a type of thorough grooming where small insects are removed from hair..
