Do you ride a bicycle?

Anyone here ride a pedal bike, if so what do you ride a mountain bike, single speed, geared racer?

What do you prefer, mountain or single speed?

Over the last Summer my son (then 6, now 7) really got into riding his bike, so instead of chasing him (on foot) around the park, I dusted off my old bike (a 'mountain' bike - but I don't think it'd last too long on a real mountain!) and we spent many a happy Summer evening cycling round the local housing estate.

Really glad to have got back into cycling and my aim is to start cycling to work on a couple of days a week come the Summer (did it once or twice in September) - its about 3 to 5 miles, I can take back lanes, less busy but further, takes me about 30 mins. Is uphill all the way (tough!) but great whizzing all the way at the end of the day!

I have a claude butler mountain bike, which is residing in the back garden since we moved six months ago, nowhere proper to store it. Up until then used regularly, will have an outing on it next week or so.

What do you prefer, mountain or single speed?

A proper mountain bike, ie one with suspension and not the £80/100 deals from Halfords, is not suitable for road riding in that you spend more time peddaling and going up and down rather than forwards.

Single speed fine, if you are ultra fit or don't need to quickly do round town trips ie need the speed to leave junctions quickly.

So if you are about town, road bike with gears. You don't need a super all encompassing racing bike etc.

I would say, especially in this weather, that if you are spending some time on your bike, make sure you have mud flaps fitted - that or waterproof underwear ... nothing worse than spending many many hours with a wet arse!!

Mountain Bike for me, the majority of my rides are off road. Bought one 18 months ago, dodgy knee prevents me from playing footy, so my Doctor suggested cycling.

Really enjoy it and ride all year round, (apart from the recent snow....) have even taken part in a couple of local charity rides.

Not sure how many gears (about 3 or 4 ))

With a bell and a big wicker basket at the front, fantastic for carrying shopping and PE kits on school run etc.

Why do ask?

Strange, I would have thought cycling would be bad for your knee, especially with a mountain bike as there's a lot of impact.

Same here...I cycle for miles on it - its flat around here so ideal!

Just remember Chris, that the bike will take some knocks as it falls over / you are knocked down - watch out for the buses in Liverpool - they really don't care, and of course get yourself some good shoes!

I just took the Doctors advice and havent had any issues since. I use SPD's so am "locked" into the pedal, which apparantly helps keep the leg/knee in line, plus its the arms that take the bumps.

i have a carrera subway, think they are called "hybrid" bikes, get the best of a road bike and mountain bike in one...ive not had any other push bikes since i was a kid so cant really compare but its good for what i use it for, mainly road riding when the suns shining with my lad in his child seat on the back

From next month I will be cycling the streets of Liverpool with my new cycle courier service. Complete with bike trailer I will be providing a B2B and B2C service with a 3 mile radius.

I have done months of preperation and as a final decision I needed to know which bike to use. I purchased a mountain bike last year but its a bit cumbersome for city work even though its good for towing a trailer. After a lot of research I decided on a single speed cycle as the terrain is prety flat around here.

I was just curious what type of bikes others used and if they found any particular type more suitable for road riding.

I bought a Dawes Horizon last year as me and the missus had been on a couple of cycle tours and really enjoyed them (best one so far was the Northumberland coast route from Newcastle to Berrick upon Tweed - 10 days 6 castles)

I don't generally ride in towns as the cars scare the hell out of me!

For city riding the single speed should be fine - especially with the narrow handlebars to slide between cars - don't forget the skinny jeans and bobble hat though!

Can't bear to part with it even though I've not done any tricks on it for about a decade

No good for long distances tho, so I have an old mountain bike for that.

The good news is that I will not be going into the city centre as I will be targetting an area outside which contains a lot of businesses within a 3 mile radius but will still be on my guard ,.

Like i said im getting back into it, ive got a marin wildcat front sus at the mo, it does the job, but i want a full sus, ideally a specialized, norco or a trek. better get saving! haha.
