Oki,

I'm in the process of putting together a dieting forum aimed primarily at UK visitors (although catering for people across the globe).

Essentially this thread needs to take the forum of some good, old, market research.

So two questions:

Are you on a diet? (if so which one)
If you were to join a dieting forum, what sections would you like to see on it? Introductions, Feedback and Support etc.

Not a diet as such but now that the summer is upon us I will be cutting out the junk/snacks.

Back to gym tomorrow too...

Have you thought about covering the exercise aspect along with just the diet element?

Well.... not so much of a diet as a "cutting-back-and-doing-more-exercise-in-a-futile-attempt-to-lose-a-bit-of-flab" malarkey.

I did start a blog way back when (www.thedietingman.blogspot.com), but to be honest it's now more of a general when I can be bothered blog.

I think you would need sections for the major diets (ie Weight Watchers, Slimming World etc), a section for Men Losing Weight, a section of success stories for encouragement, a section of bargain weight loss food, where people can post that in ASDA this week the disgusting cardboard weightwatcher biscuits are half price etc, a section on what exercise people do to lose weight, perhaps a Sin Bin area, where people can confess what junk food they have eaten... just a few thoughts that would perhaps have me interested and popping back as a casual dieter.

Hope this helps!

Been on a diet since Jan. At first i though i prob only do it for 2-3 weeks but have still stuck to it and been going gym at least 3 times a week sometimes 4-5. Was 94kg in Jan now down to 78kg. But i think i lost more weight then this, because i do alot of heavy lifting as well hard to monitor the lose. But def feel alot better and better stamina, hopefully can keep this going.

I think a forum would be a great idea when i started off i did so many google searches and visited so many sites. Having everything in 1 place is a great idea.

First of all "diet" is the incorrect terminology, everybody is on a diet even animals, a diet is simply what you eat.

You dont need to do weight watchers etc etc just monitor how many calories you eat, see what your body needs per day, take off 500 calories from what your body needs and eat that amount.

Helps if you eat healthy meals in that amount but an odd bit of chocolate wont hurt too much, but if you eat alot you will hit your calories for the day and then you will end up going over because you will be hungry.

Also trying to just stop eating everything you enjoy isnt going to work, helps if you are able to subsidise those foods with a healthier alternative, although this doesnt mean you can eat loads of it.

Excercise also helps, add this into your routine to burn the calories and help you lose weight even quicker. If you have weight to lose, i suggest using cardio it is the most effective method for burning fat and losing weight. Yes there is the option of strength training and muscle burns fat, but it takes alot to gain even one pound of muscle.

Ideal excercise plan, strength training once per week and cardio every other day.

Some info
Not all fats are bad, saturated fats are though so avoid these if possible.
You cannot lose massive amounts of weight in a short period of time, the most weight you lose at the start of a health plan is simply water.
Calorie counting is very easy, most foods now contain all the info you need.
Any exercise is better than no exercise.

This is all just info ive collected from going on the internet, it is the only way in which to lose weight, all those expensive diet schemes do the same thing in a fancy way and its you wasting your money.

Which features of the site do you use the most? Is there nothing specific or do you pay because it has a feature like the weekly weigh in where you record you're weight?

I am on the survival diet ... just about, its called water, more water and even more water (sometimes its coloured) with a splash of mashed potatoes and some fish!

I don't want a dieters site, I want a site that offers alternatives to those who have problems eating all those unhealthy things some like!

Would love some novel ideas what to do with salmon that doesn't involve diary produce!! So many people these days have various intolerences, this to me is the way to go!

There is a daily food tracker and an online catalogue of foods and how many points are in each portion. I also use the calculator to point foods. At the end of the week there is a weight tracker where you log your weight and then it gives a wee note of encouragement or a telling off depending how you have done...lol. There is also a chart that plots each weigh in so you can see how your weight is falling off or not. The forum is kind of split into 2 groups those who attend meetings and come on to the forum for advice and chat and then those who diet at home and online but also come into the forums for advice and chat. The forum isnt as advanced as this and chat can get kind of lost from thread to thread hence I have no patience for it. I have previously lost 28lb while attending meetings over 8 years ago and I kept it off for about 5 years. Since starting the online diet, and although the diet still does work, its much easier to cheat so the weight loss is much slower. My biggest problem is not finding the time to exercise. During the day I never sit down with house work, caring for mum, shopping, cooking....the first chance I get to sit down I then have to start my work creating my tiaras and jewellery but its definately the lack of proper cardiovascular exercise is the reason why I am not losing the weight as quickly as I would like.

I'm always trying to loose weight, not a specific diet as such but I just try to make the right choices. I used to do weight watchers and I did think their site was good - I used to like to look at the sucess stories (I *think* you can view them by height - I was always interested to see people my height and what they had lost) as they were quite inspiring and you could pick up good tips. I used the BMI calculator too.

Not on a diet really but like other people summer is coming so have cut out the sweets, crisps etc and will eat less Carbs. I also drink about 4 pints of water a day. I have managed to get my wife to drink more water and she never gets a headache. I your thinking of a good subject to look at regarding your forum, then drinking water is a good one. I think a lot of people don't realise how important it is to drink the stuff. You can survive weeks without food but not so long without water.

I lost 4 stone last year on the SillyJokes diet but after becoming quite ill with gall stones a bit went back on and the motivation trickled away.

I'm now doing Weight Watchers with a good friend (and my sister by phone) and I've lost a stone again. To be honest, I think I'd go back to the SillyJokes diet if it wasn't for my friend but WW has helped motivate me again.

I have not bothered with the online forums. I don't even stay for the meeing at WW. Part of my method is to relegate the importance of food, not talk about it non stop, but there are many excellent weight loss resources out there. You are going to have to come up with something pretty good or niche to compete.

The problem with most people trying to loose weight is the lack of understanding that they have on the subject. In order to loose weight and really keep it off it will require a lifestyle change. The idea of just restricting your diet for a period of time and then increasing the amount of exercise you do for a while is not a long term solution. A lot of people seem to be starving themselves as well - they refuse to eat even when they are feeling hungry. What is needed is more education on how the body works as well as how nutrition works. The idea of counting calories to controls one's weight is very primitive as it means you aren't watching certain nutrients within your diet but just focusing on a total which is essentially calculated by giving each nutrient a calorie value. This means that a packet of peanuts could contain only 100 calories but if all those calories are from fat that amounts to quite an unhealthy packet of peanuts. I also think that a little education on the body types that exist is important, you would probably have to cater your diet differently depending on whether you are an endomorph or ectomorph etc. People that have an endlessly optimistic metabolism may seem to have it easier than those who don't, although with a good understanding of nutrition I believe that it should be possible for those with larger waists to have a metabolism like those who can eat non-stop.

Anyway, I'm not sure what my point is, but yeah, there you go. :D

I'm on a diet due to food intolerances. I'm currently going without the simple pleasures of:

Wheat (argh!)
Oats (argh!)
Milk (but not butter - phew!)
Cheese (argh!)
Sugar (argh!)
Caffeine and alcohol

Lucky me :D

As to what I'd like to see on a site, my culinary imagination is not the best, so to see some recipe ideas is always a plus for me.
I wonder, would it be possible to tell the computer what you do./ don't/ can't eat, and for it to throw out some recipes based on your selections? That would be excellent! :D

You poor thing! Denied the major food groups of wine, chocolate and tea!

Sabian: I think this thread has highlighted that you need a section for debating what does and doesn't work!

I have a severe intolerance to garlic... it would be lovely if someone could figure out a way of making a site where foods (bought in) could be listed by what they contain...

as for a diet i am on the SEE-food diet i see food and eat it... depending on the garlic, that said i need to look at losing a bit of belly!

@gillie try cracked peper just before it goes in the oven ( not out the grinder get some chunks, or local honey mixed with a little mustard...

I go on low-fat diets, I'm actually just off one. I don't think it's girlly to do it nowadays, as lets face it once you lose weight it's only a matter of time in today's culture before you put it back on.

Yes. I put on 12 pounds and although this wouldn't usually bother me, my relationship is on the rocks, my clothes have stopped fitting and I feel like crap. So I am trying to get back down to a normal 9st/size 12. I am doing the cabbage soup diet. I am on day one. I want cake.

If you were to join a dieting forum, what sections would you like to see on it? Introductions, Feedback and Support etc.

Introductions, support, feedback, before and after pics (maybe), speciality diets/fad diets forums (like one particular board for the Atkins and one for the cabbage soup diet and one for every other popular diet etc...) and positivity. Lots of it. The only thing keeping me going right now is visualising what my body will look like in 6 days time.

Hope I helped. :)

Just to let you know, on day one I lost 1/4 of a pound.

*blink*

Something else you could have on these forums is some kind of motivation because I am getting closer and closer to the Tunnocks Caramels in the cupboard...
