Are you a Christian?

The Atheists here are happy to answer any direct questions posed by the religious and to answer them logically and with an open mind. It is difficult to remain calm in these skewed circumstances.

Did the universe have a beginning?

Was that beginning without any cause, or was it caused?

Was the beginning caused by some thing eternal or by some One eternal?

Science is spending enormous amounts of money in order to collide 2 neutrons and try to create the conditions where anti-materiel is sustained and preserved for long enough time to prove its existence.

The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear, Newton.

Proving the existence of anti-materiel will, based on Newton's law, prove the existence of the opposite - a force that is able to create materiel from nothing at all - exactly the opposite to a force able to absorb materiel which vanishes for good. This has already been done to a high enough extend for me to believe in it.

Science has almost proven this to 100%...
Now , please, tell me what is the reason The Church prosecuted great minds on this earth. Scientist of enormous value to our world and people without whom our life would have been so different. Same those people everyone is now praising - religious and non-religious.

Oh, Yes. Apart from within your User's Manual, The so called Bible, where else can you find even the tiniest evidence of the existence of your "Divine One". Our world existed for millions of years - why did he come to existence only within the past 2 000 years? Where was he until then?

I think I better answer DCE as promised.
Did the universe have a beginning?
I am not sure, perhaps it is infinite but I am not going to worry too lose any sleep about it. There are far more intelligent people than me investigating this and I am happy to leave them to it.

Was that beginning without any cause, or was it caused?
See above.

Was the beginning caused by some thing eternal or by some One eternal?
See above.
Now I will ask you a question. If your head honcho deemed that you should all commit suicide (a la Jim Jones) in order to find immortality would you do it?

Religious history is also full of charismatic leaders who inspired people to be devoted to them, but who brought disaster upon their followers.

We don't have any leaders or a Head Honcho.

(Matthew 23:8-10) But YOU, do not YOU be called Rabbi, for one is YOUR teacher, whereas all YOU are brothers. 9*Moreover, do not call anyone YOUR father on earth, for one is YOUR Father, the heavenly One. 10*Neither be called 'leaders,' for YOUR Leader is one, the Christ.

Christendom's churches have human leaders, such as the pope of Rome, the patriarchs and metropolitans of the Eastern Orthodox churches, and the heads of other religions.

Jehovah's Witnesses recognize no human as their leader.

They are not disciples or followers of any man.

That is why we must listen to what the Bible is saying, as it's commandments, are for our protection, and prevents us from being misled, in all aspects of our worship.

Blatantly and patently false. Firstly, you call yourselves Jehovah Witnesses. This is a name made by man, following a religious belief started by man. You follow this leadership, as much today as when the founders were alive.

Secondly, you have to respect the elders in your organisation. (Who I assume are Human ;) )

This recent BBC news report says:

A 24-year-old man has spoken of his sadness and frustration leaving the Jehovah's Witness which has resulted in him losing all contact with his family.

When Nathan Phillips decided to leave he was told by the elders that he would be disfellowshipped immediately.

He said: "It does make me feel very angry, not with the people so much and not with mum but the way the religion works."

Nathan was disfellowshipped by the Jehovah's Witness in May 2009. Prior to this, he had stopped attending meetings for six months because he had stopped believing in the faith.

"My beliefs had changed; my views had changed - it just wasn't for me."
He had also taken up smoking and drinking.

Each congregation of the Jehovah's Witness has a group of elders who are regarded as spiritually mature and are responsible for leading the congregation.

"I was called into a judicial committee of three elders.

"They sit in front of you like a panel and asked me questions to see if I had been smoking or drinking - basically they sent me out the room and when I came back in they said they'd decided to disfellowship me.

"Obviously I did explain to them about the impact this would have on my family but none of that was taken into consideration.

"There's a lot of nice people in the witnesses, I'd never bad mouth them. Jehovah's Witnesses are very well-known for knocking on people's doors and for speaking to people out in the streets and they always come across as being very nice people.

"But what people don't realise is this part of it [disfellowshipping process] and how it goes on behind closed doors."

"It was a shock to begin with, and I hoped it would turn itself around, but they believe it so much I don't think it ever will."

"But what people don't realise is this part of it [disfellowshipping process] and how it goes on behind closed doors."

Nathan said he did not believe the situation would change and recently met with the elders.
"About three months ago I arranged a meeting with the judicial committee again and pleaded with them really that I was finding it very hard and thought that I could cope with it but couldn't and they said the only thing I could do was come back.

"Again I explained to them I was coming back for the wrong reasons and the only reason I wanted to come back was to be able to see my family but they said there was nothing they could do."

BBC Somerset asked his mother and family for a comment but they refused, as did the elders in Wells.

A spokesman for the Jehovah's Witness headquarters in London said Nathan's situation was a "private matter" between him and his mother.

This is also backed up on Wikipedia.

Jehovah's Witnesses employ various levels of congregational discipline as formal controls administered by congregation elders. Guilt and repentance are determined by a tribunal of elders, and hearings concerning what they term "serious sin" are performed by formal judicial committees. A variety of controls can be enforced, from restriction of duties performed in the congregation to excommunication, known as disfellowshipping, and shunning by the congregation. Members who are disfellowshipped have an opportunity to regain membership. The practice of disfellowshipping has been criticized by many non-members and ex-members.

God has a personal name that he wants us to use. (Exodus 3:15)

That name, written in Hebrew characters and transliterated YHWH, appears some 7,000 times in the Bible.

For centuries, it has been used in English in the form “Jehovah.”—Psalm 83:18.

Since the elders in our congregations submit to Christ, the Head of the congregation, they imitate Jesus as loving Shepherds, and are slaves to the Christian Congregation, not leaders, they listen to the Bibles direction on all matters.

The responsibility of the elders is to keep the congregation clean and to help to restore repentant sinners, they do so with discernment and humility, letting their decisions reflect Jehovah’s wisdom, not their own.

But not a single one of you is Jehovah's witness... None of you were born at the time. Your organisation and what it believes started many years later, when "someone" (it all starts with 1 person) decided they knew the proper way of devoting themselves to God.

So you don't follow God, for you have never spoke to God, you follow a movement started by a human, a mere human, who you hope got it right. (But the evidence says have got it so wrong so many times)....

Since the elders in our congregations submit to Christ, the Head of the congregation, they imitate Jesus as loving Shepherds, and are slaves to the Christian Congregation, not leaders, they listen to the Bibles direction on all matters.
This is a bit like the Queen being the head of state. For sure, officially that is the case, but in reality power is invested Prime Minister, or in this case the head(s) of the church, who is always a human being.

The responsibility of the elders is to keep the congregation clean and to help to restore repentant sinners, they do so with discernment and humility, letting their decisions reflect Jehovah's wisdom, not their own.
Really... So where does it say you shall not smoke, not drink except in moderation, and not accept blood in the Bible? And where does it say in the Bible that such people should be removed from the organisation????

So what we have is subjective, and not universal, and as such, you follow the teachings of man, and not from God.

Someone has to write JW policy. People have to agree what the next failed prophecy is going to be don't they? Organisations cannot run without a governing body.

If your governing body in Brooklyn decided to interpret the bible in a way that concluded that all JWs should commit suicide would you comply?

Now I agreed to answer any of your questions about atheism and I did. If you want to participate this then just answer the question with a yes or no.

The jehovahs witlessnes believe the watchtower organisation is the offical channel of communication between god and man. They further believe the governing body there - the boys in brooklyn, are his official mouthpiece. So the answer would appear to have to be yes.

However, I suspect the answer you'll get is something along the lines of god would never tell the boys in brooklyn that, so it's never going to happen. Or, something along the lines of thats idle speculation and not worthy of an answer.

My worry would be that as and when the numbers of jehovahs witlesses decline to the critical point of barely existing, their cult leaders, seeing their cash cow die before their very eyes, would indeed inform all memebrs to sign their property and resources over to the watchtower as an offering to jehovah in preparation for his coming, and then tell them to kill themselves to help jehovah on his way.

They're a dangerous evil cult, capable of anything.

DCE? Your response is?

(Matthew 28:18-20) 18*And Jesus approached and spoke to them, saying: “All authority has been given me in heaven and on the earth. 19*Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20*teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.

(Matthew 9:36-38) 37*Then he said to his disciples: “Yes, the harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38*Therefore, beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”

You can see from these scripture's all authority was given to Jesus in Heaven and on the Earth, and not to men, and he is with us until the conclusion of the System of things, he is directing the work.

He also said the workers are few but the harvest is great, that is why, we do not have time, to answer foolish questions, like that BDW.

In reality DCE, I see you quoting what was said by a man - Matthew, not God. So you follow what man has said, and you hope this is correct.

How you reconcile this we already know, but lets not pretend you're certain these are God's words, because you cannot be sure, for you have not spoken to God.

There is a lot of "scripture" DCE, you've just chosen one of those to follow.

Because if man had written it, he would have given himself all authority, plus man could not have produced such, a perfect arrangement, and written a book that contains the wisdom within its pages.

(2 Peter 1:20-21) 20*For YOU know this first, that no prophecy of Scripture springs from any private interpretation. 21*For prophecy was at no time brought by man’s will, but men spoke from God as they were borne along by holy spirit.

If man had wrote it, he would have taken all the credit to himself, would he not.

That's exactly what has happened. Men give themselves authority by claiming to be adhering to the word of God. It's a perfect method of gaining authority because no one can question God, without having man speak for him.

We can see this has happened more than once, with many religions following this scheme, so your assertion that man would claim credit is not borne out by the evidence.

It should also be noted, that this "book" was edited by man, who then decided which parts of the cannon were worth keeping, and what they didn't believe. So God's word would have been corrupted by man, and as such why should God dictate to any single man...

That makes no sense, unless its taken with a view of man wanting authority.

DCE is a good example of the dangers of religion in my opinion. Blind of all logic and ignoring everyone else because the religious are the ones that know better. And thinking because they say it then it must be true and can't comprehend why people don't agree.

The Bible exposes, those who profess to be doing what God has told them to do, in his written word, and by their works you will see that they are not doing God's will.

This is what Jesus said:-

(Matthew 7:21-23) 21*"Not everyone saying to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will. 22*Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?' 23*And yet then I will confess to them: I never knew YOU! Get away from me, YOU workers of lawlessness.

So, are the Churches doing as Jesus's father instructed, absolutely not, they are doing everything, but God's will.

Blessing Bombs, military hardware, you name it they are doing it putting fear into the hearts of people, with their teaching of a place called Hell.

I will not bore you with the details you already know, it not rocket science, you can see it quite plainly and work it out for yourself.

Their so called Authority will soon be removed from them by God himself, and they are now being exposed, for the terrible things they have done in God's name, and still doing, which God is soon going to set matter straight, and clear his name of any reproach on it.

Muslims also teach Hell-fire as well, get the drift, they got it from the Catholic Church & Co.

But you give yourself authority too DCE... You proclaim the end of a system if not the world, and this is based on what? Who gives the JW's the right?

I mean the JW's have the "New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures", who gave them authority to translate and change the word of God? The fact you feel it needs translating highly suggests you don't believe God is multilingual, and that's a highly strange concept if you accept (if you believe in God) that everyone is his children... Would God have a communication problem should he pop up tomorrow?

The answer should be no. So there has never been a need to write

Next, you try give us a vision of heaven on Earth, so lets come back to the situation with the cannon. The 3rd book of Baruch, which none of the major donominations accept as part of their cannon (surprise surprise), says not just that Heaven is not on Earth, but they're multiple heavens, and that Hell is on the way to Heaven.... Those who are building Hell are demonic!

But you say otherwise....

Are you doing God's will be telling me these things, or do your actions speak as loudly as others... Given the nature of what you pick and choose to include in your religion, you all have changed the word of God, and are all false prophets.

More to the point is how some denominations accept certain books into their cannon, and others do not, and the real point is the human choice which is making it.

All of you at heart will state you follow God, and that you know God's will, but based on a Bible that's comes in so many different editions... There are many books which make up the works of "the bible", it sounds like a legal copyright nightmare if it was wrote today, they'd have a field day in court pointing out which books influenced this, and what works influenced that...

DCE also likes to use the analogy of a businessman using his secretary to write a letter, but when that letter is wrote, its the businessman who puts his signature on it, not the secretary who wrote it.

Where is this signature? Its no where to be seen... All we have is at every level is something created and/or chosen by man...

The Book of Baruch proves itself of human origin by its typically Apocryphal mistakes.

It purports to tell of captive Jews in Babylon collecting money and sending it to the priests in Jerusalem in the fifth year of that city’s having been burned by Nebuchadnezzar, when, in fact, at that time there was neither man nor beast there.

It shows Jeconiah with the other Jews in Babylon, when, in fact, he was in prison.

It tells the Jews that they will be in Babylon for seven generations, whereas the facts are that they were there only seventy years.

And it speaks of the Jews having “waxen old in a strange country,” although having been there only five years.

No wonder Jerome did not think it worthy of translation!—Baruch 1:2-7; 3:11; 6:3.

I cannot believe that you guys are happy to continue to argue with this person (DCE). He point blank refuses to respond to questions and continues to cut and paste nonsensical and irrelevant tracts from his flawed interpretation of the bible. He ignores most of us but we respond to all of his goading. I can just imagine him sitting alone with his online bible chortling away at successfully holding this platform.

Can't you see that all you are doing is cluttering up the thread with this **** and making it impossible to follow?

I agree with CJD. It's time to stop.

Blatantly and patently false. Firstly, you call yourselves Jehovah Witnesses. This is a name made by man, following a religious belief started by man. You follow this leadership, as much today as when the founders were alive.

Not to mention the NWT Jehovah or Yahweh Name is in many different translations.

How do you account for that?

Are you getting the point?

1. King James Version 1611 - Jehovah - Ex.6:3;Ps.83:18;Is.12:2,26:4
2. American Standard Version 1901 - Jehovah - 6823 times (approx..)
3. An American Translation by Smith&Goodspeed 1935 - Yahweh at Ex.6:3;3:15
4. Bible in Living English by Steven T.Byington 1972 - Jehovah 6823 times
5. Holy Scriptures by J.N.Darby 1882 Jehovah - 6823 times
6. Emphatic Diaglott by Benjamin Wilson 1864 - Jehovah - Matthew 21:42 etc.
7. Jerusalem Bible(Catholic) 1966 - Yahweh - 6823 times
8. New English Bible 1970 - Jehovah - Ex.3:15;6:3
9. Emphasized Bible by J.B.Rotherham 1878-1902 - Yahweh - 6823 times
10. Good News Bible -Today's English Ver. 1976 - Yahweh - Ex.3:15 footnote
11. Living Bible 1972 - Jehovah - 313 times, Ps.83:18 etc.
12. Revised Version 1885 - Jehovah - Ex.6:3;Ps.83:18;Is.12:2;26:4
13. M.L.B. - New Berkeley Version - Jehovah - Ps.8:1,9;16:2 Yahweh - Hosea 12:2
14. New Jerusalem Bible - 1985 Yahweh - 6823 times
15. English Version for the Deaf 1987 - Yahweh - Ps.83:18; Is.42:8; Ex.3:15
16. Literal Translation by Jay P.Green 1987 - Jehovah - 6823 times
17. Webster Bible by Noah Webster 1833 - Jehovah - Ex.6:3;Ps.83:18;Is.12:2
18. Holy Scriptures by Jewish Pub.Soc. - Tetragrammaton - Ex.6:3
19. Amplified Bible 1965 - Yaweh - Ex.6:3
20. Young's Literal Translation - Jehovah - 6823 times

Which confirms this scripture below Subbynet would you not agree?

(Psalm 83:18) 18*That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah/Yaweh You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

The New World Translation, also so put's God's name back into God's written word, where God's name should be, the Churches had taken it out, I wonder why? Trinity comes to mind

Do you agree they had?

It's good to know who you are praying to, as you would not want to be worshipping the wrong God, as Lord and God are only titles, as mentioned before, that is why knowing God's name is very important.

that is why knowing God's name is very important.

No it's not. Clearly it is not why else would there be so many different names for gods throughout time.

Just because you joined 7 million people who say "yeah we will call it that" does not make it right. Which is why 6 billion people disagree with you.

If knowing the correct name is so important then you by the law of averages you are not getting into the "Kingdom". Because other than what you have been told you dont have a scrap of credible evidence about any of your far fetched beliefs. Which again is why only 7 million people are part of your cult.

You mean false God's, yes there were plenty of them, and there are still many today.

It was prophesied by Jesus it would be all revealed, in the end times, how people have been mislead, by the Churches, who have taken God's name out of the bible and replacing it with the Trinity teaching, saying Jesus is God, when we know according to the truth of God's word, that he is Jehovah's only begotten son and not Almighty God himself.

Science a Religion?

In a article in New Scientist, Michael Shallis has come to the defense of physicist Fred Hoyle, who has been criticized for some of his views. “Perhaps Hoyle’s biggest heresy,” says Shallis, ‘is that he has introduced the idea that the Universe needs a cosmic intelligence to control it.’ He adds that Hoyle believes that without such intelligence “the Universe does not make sense.”

Though Shallis maintains that the existence of God or purpose in the universe is a “metaphysical question” with which science cannot deal, he observes “that scientists are permitted by their own colleagues to say metaphysical things about lack of purpose and not the reverse. This suggests, that science, in allowing this metaphysical notion, sees itself as religion and presumably as an atheistic religion (if you can have such a thing).” I believe their is as there is, don't you CJD.

Refusal to believe in a higher power reveals an attitude similar to that cited by the psalmist, who said: “The wicked one according to his superciliousness makes no search; all his ideas are: ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 10:4; 19:1)

Furthermore, this attitude has the effect of limiting the theories of the origin of the universe to mere chance.

We can see CJD why you are always trying to stop the Good News of the Kingdom, as your, metaphysical notion, sees itself as religion and presumably as an, atheistic religion does it not?

Well its getting that thin we can see right through It. (Sorry for the pun)

Sorry DCE, I'm no longer reading past your first line.

let me know when you are able to read anything we post and link to about science and I'll start answering you.

Meanwhile go bang on someone else's door - I'm not interested in your nonsense. This is a debate not a JW ranting session.

I'm done with you until you're prepared to have a two way conversation.

(And I suggest others do the same)
