Some of you may already be aware, but the "Hacktivist" group Anonymous took down the GoDaddy hosting site last night and with it millions of websites around the world... GoDaddy Gets Taken Down

Apparently GoDaddy have sorted it out, but just to make you aware that it happened as it may have affected your site and emails sent to you may have bounced.

Cheers

Ryan

I don't use these myself but noticed a clients site had gone down who uses godaddy and its back up to today so guess this was why. Very poor security from godaddy considering the millions of sites they host!

A sustained DDoS could take down any site or host if it was big enough. Not so much about security but more about mitigation.

I can see how it could happen, but didnt Amazon and paypal prevent such an attack last year?

They did but it may not have been as large as the Godaddy attack.

Note I'm not supporting Godaddy on this subject, I still think they are an appalling company to deal with but without knowing the specifics of the attack it does become harder to point the finger...

Ah. So this will explain the spike in visits in the last 12 hours to our Free Website Status Checker. Checks were coming in thick and fast from all over the globe for all manner of sites - that I assume were unlucky enough to be hosted with GD.

One advantage I guess of hosting on a smaller, more low-key web host.

What's wrong with these people?
When they were attacking major corporations I can see why they would get public support, but now they're taking down website hosts and hurting lots of small businesses and websites, I can't see them being very popular in the future.

GoDaddy previously supported the US SOPA bill which put them on the radar for abuse.

ANY host big or small can be susceptible to DDOS without proper mitigation tools, even then they're not infallible.

If GoDaddy did suffer a DDOS and try and deny it, I suspect Anonymous will soon re-iterate their point which would be very embarrassing for GoDaddy.

I have a couple of sites on GoDaddy and by sheer coincidence I was doing something through my account with them when I noticed they were down.

No great shakes, the world kept spinning and normal service is resumed.

I don't do anything complicated with them at all but if I ever have any issues, the exemplary customer service is matched only by Amazon IMHO.

Googled it and yes you are right.

How does that affect GoDaddy and their offerings ?

In my opinion, when a company draws enough negative attention (killing elephants and supporting SOPA), they become a likelier target for things like DDoS attacks and whatnot. I doubt their official statement is honest.
