Animal Photography

Hello Members,

Safety: Safety is always first when taking pictures of animals. This includes your safety as well as the animal’s safety. As even the tamest of domesticated animals can become dangerous when frightened, always encourage a sense of calm while photographing animals. For wild animals, maintain a safe distance at all times. Getting too close can endanger you and upset the animals.

Tripod: Tripods are small stands designed to hold cameras and reduce the shake that often occurs when taking a picture with the camera in your hand. Using a tripod is ideal for many types of photography, including animal photography. Reduced camera shake results in clearer, sharper pictures, which is ideal when taking photographs of animals.

Animal Behavior: When photographing animals, anticipating behavior is often the key to capturing that special moment or rare action that makes the photograph so interesting. Before taking your photo, take a moment to study the behavior of the animal and notice any patterns in movement. After noticing an intriguing pattern, use anticipatory shooting to capture the moment.

Lighting: Plan to use lighting that will display the personality of the animal and result in a sharp and clear photo. When photographing outdoors, take advantage of cloudy days, as clouds are natural light diffusers that eliminate harsh shadows created by the sun and provide a soft and even light. For indoor pet photography, use light diffusers or create a natural light effect with studio lighting.

Multiple Photos: When using a digital camera, take multiple photos during your animal photography shoot. With digital cameras, you're able to choose the shots you want to print and discard the others. This allows you to capture the perfect moment without wasting film or incurring the expense of developing each picture. Bring an extra memory card and take as many photos as you can, using different camera settings and points of view.

Thanks and Regards

aww bless the gorgeous little things, saw a hummingbird moth for the first time last year - unfortunately the phone camera wasn't the best but a lovely thing to see!

I remember waking up in my tent on one of my photo shoots abroad. I heard this buzzing and thought it was a bee. Something in the back of my mind said, 'Come on - it's too much sound - too powerful!' I poked my head out of my tent and saw a humming bird! A few minutes later I was sat outside my tent shaving and it reappeared and was hovering near my left ear watching me shave. :D

I was watching some video at a friends house.A camera placed on top of a Peregrine falcons head, some amazing flight footage. The Peregrine attacks a Kestrel, they both crash to the ground.Looking slightly miffed the kestrel flies away. The peregrine was out of breath and remained on the ground, the final shot a sheep comes across and stares into the camera lens!
True animal photography.

I couldn't let this thread go by without adding this:

It's amazing and totally insane at the same time. Could make for some great closeups though!

Edit: I should add that the makers of this mask recommend you sit in your garden without moving for hours on end and that it could be some time before the hummingbirds are brave enough to investigate :p

You did of course know that a 'hummer' is American slang for a particular sort of ..cough, ahem...activity, and thus a hummingbird might well be the sort of independent person, (undefined by gender, natch) who does this ..cough, ahem..activity, and that we will all be found in Google by slightly undesirable sorts who surf the intertubes with only one hand.
Just sayin'.

Having only recently bought a decentish camera I haven't quite got the hang of the settings, but here are a couple of mine. As I say I am new to it, but try and take the camera wherever I go now to get some good shots.
