Seeking Insights: How Would You Price & Use a Practical Safety Consultancy?

In recent months, I’ve been quietly working on a new venture in the health & safety/compliance space aimed squarely at small and medium businesses.
This service combines hands-on consultancy with online, editable templates, giving businesses both guidance and ready-to-use documentation. Your insights could help refine the model before launch.

I’d really like your thoughts, critiques, and ideas.

Below is how I’m positioning it (brand name withheld for now).

Vision

To empower self-employed trades and small businesses in manufacturing, logistics, engineering, and light industrial sectors to adopt safety, health, and environmental practices that are not just legally compliant, but practical, visual, and genuinely embraced by their teams.

My Mission

  • Simplify health & safety so it’s usable, not just “compliance paperwork.”
  • Provide both in-person consultancy and online templates, so businesses can choose the level of support that works for them
  • Make safety visible - it's a bit like food, if it looks good, people will eat it, if it doesn't, you are instantly put off
  • Be the outsourced “safety compass” for growing businesses, handling audits, documentation, training, incident support, and continuous improvement.
  • Deliver value without breaking the bank: accessible, transparent, flexible models, rather than high‑cost “big consultancy” packages.

In short, I want to turn the ambiguity and burden of safety compliance into clarity, trust, and a daily habit for businesses that can’t afford a full in‑house HSE department.

Core Services (for now!)

  • In-Person Consultancy = on-site audits, risk assessments, staff training, signage rollout, and ongoing support.
  • Online Templates & Documentation = editable risk assessments, method statements, policies, RAMS, checklists, and guides, ready-to-use and easy to update.
  • Compliance Support & Advice = ongoing remote support, legislative updates, and incident guidance.
  • Signage and design = safety should be visible and personal to every business - study shows a business logo on a safety sign helps improve the safety culture of a workplace

Strengths, Weaknesses & Feedback Request

Strengths:
  • Combines on-site support with ready-to-use online templates
  • Tailored for each business - practical, visual, and actionable
  • Avoids the high overheads of traditional consultancies or employment of an H&S Officer/Manager
Weaknesses:
  • Pricing perception is this too high or too low for SMEs
  • Convincing SMEs to move from reactive compliance to proactive safety culture
  • Marketing the business as a new startup

Questions for UKBF:
  • Would your business pay for this combination of in-person support + online templates?
  • Which package feels most realistic and valuable for a business of 10 - 50 employees?
  • Would you prefer a retainer model, fixed packages, or a mix?
  • What would make a safety consultancy stand out enough for you to pay more?
  • How important are visuals, signage, and behaviour cues compared to purely legal compliance documents?

I’m hoping to get honest feedback from business owners, safety officers, and consultants.
Anything that seems unrealistic, missing, or overpriced ~ I want to hear it.

Thank you in advance for your support and help.

Most businesses will already have H&S policies in place and carried out the necessary training. If they need a review or further training they will probably used the same company that did the initial assessment.

It’s not about the money. It’s about that initial assessment. A business working with toxic chemicals will need a whole different policy to an accountant. £295 might not be enough for a full assessment of a machine shop or building contractor.

Questions for UKBF:
  • Would your business pay for this combination of in-person support + online templates? No. But that's because my business is me, working from home, so definitely not your target market (but representative of a big portion of SMEs, which really isn't a target market.
  • Which package feels most realistic and valuable for a business of 10 - 50 employees? More targeted, but still quite broad - a tam of 50 salespeople will have very different requirements for a team of 50 in manufacturing our processing environments.
  • Would you prefer a retainer model, fixed packages, or a mix?
  • What would make a safety consultancy stand out enough for you to pay more? How would you demonstrate that you are adding more value?
  • How important are visuals, signage, and behaviour cues compared to purely legal compliance documents?
I'm not in the H&S world, but as broad rule, the better you niche & target your market, the more opportunity you get to offer premium product & service

Sounds like a solid idea, but the big question is why would someone choose you over the many others out there? It’s a pretty crowded space, and most small businesses are watching every penny. You’ll probably get better traction if you start with a clear niche — for example, small manufacturers or local trades — and build out from there.

Most SMEs know health & safety matters but struggle to find the time and often don’t really see the value. Templates are easy to find online, so your edge could be the audit and hand-holding — helping owners understand their key risks, then guiding them through what actually needs doing.

You could even offer a free 30-minute “Safety Health Check” as a lead-in to your Safety Start package. Show that you take the grunt-work off their plate, make them compliant, and keep their people safe — once they see the value, many will naturally move up through your packages as they grow.

I was thinking to better define your niche as well. For example, what SME industries or sectors struggle to get H&S right? Can you specialise in products for say just building trade, small companies which use fork lifts, small retail, garages? One size fits all from a new company won't have much punch in a crowded market place. Being able to define your market better might give you an easier route to market with a better defined product.
