How can I get more Twitter followers?

ShaunPearce5 is my account name. I'm a big newbie when it comes to Twitter. I've been challenged by a fellew business friend to get more followers than him.

I'm on the back foot and I'm wondering if you guys can help.

Is this a blatant add?

Simples.

keep posting tweets with spam hooks like 'MLM' 'SEO' 'Network Marketing' 'Google' 'ebook' 'PayPal' 'home business' 'work at home' 'online dating' 'adult interest' 'sexy girls' etc. You'll have lots of followers soon enough.

However, once twitter has one of it's regular culls you may lose the spambots!

If you want to build followers to keep, there's no better way than to do the simple stuff, such as following interesting people and post regular, non-spammy content that folks will either find useful or be searching for. Read up on the mashable guide, or follow Nikki Pilkington's tweetmentor programme to get 'up to spec' with using twitter .

Whatever you do, don't be tempted into one of the 'follow ring' programs - they're the work of the devil

The way to get lots of followers quickly is to follow thousands of people, a percentage of them are bound to follow you back, then you can start unfollowing those you have followed if you wish. I have no opinion as the whether this is a good idea or not, you will have to make up your own mind. It is not something that I do, but I have no doubt that it will work.

Getting new followers is simple. Have something interesting to say and people will find you.

probably someone new like yourself or a spammer lol

Use Twitter search to find people talking about a subject that interests you then follow and reply to them, the chances are they will follow you back. Also follow people who follow other people in the same niche as yourself, if they're interested in the other guy, they'll probably be interested in you.

Followng 1,000s of people then unfollowing those who don't follow you back will increase your follower count, but it's a pointless exercise because you're end up with accounts that use auto-follow, marketeers, other people trying to increase their own follower number etc, lots of noise, not much signal! This is a technique used by spammers and isn't recommeneded.

If you just simply want a load of followers for your bet then templarmc and crewgirl are spot on also the words tea, viagra, watches, porn, all attract lots of automated followers (it's been a learning experience)

Is there a deadline for your bet?

PS there is a thread on ukbf with "The ultimate post your twitter name" so you could go through and follow a load of us on there or you can go through and follow a load of your followers followers

Use http://wefollow.com to group with like minded people, hobbies, interests

Mentioning American states/cities usually results it a flood of real estate agents, insurance cos, lawyers, prostitutes (Some even offer a free trial! ) and other undesirables following you.
Brand names e.g. ipod, Nike etc also attracts the spammers.

It replies to people who swear and tells them off!

I assume it's the guy you reply to frequently with 90 odd followers you're talking about?

You could easily bypass him in less than an hour by using the follow 1,000s of people technique, but you'll get spammed to death for doing so.
