Help! No knowledge of internet and hosting!

Hi guys,

As you've probably guessed from the title my knowledge of internet and hosting is extremely limited so I need some advice.

I recently purchased a new hosting package which offers me 200mb disk space per Quota. I've since had endless issues loading my site and my developer (who I don't trust for a number of reasons) claims that this is due to the fact that I do not have enough disk space and 200MB is not sufficient. Others however have told me that it is more than enough :| To be honest, I have no idea what 200MB disk space per quota actually means! :|

A little info about the website itself -My business is a local property letting portal (similar to rightmove.com) so everything is done online as opposed to being a simple blog or a website advertising a small business or something of that nature. Users of the site upload images of properties etc. I estimate the hits to be roughly 5-6k a month.

Please advise....

200MB quota is the amount of disk space you have to store things like photos, files, databases and emails usually.

200MB of bandwidth would be how much can be downloaded from your site, so if you have a 5mb photo that people are viewing / downloading the website will be gone pretty quickly.

If it is disk space at 200mb and you have a property letting portal with 200MB disk space and people uploading it doesn't sound enough at all I am afraid :(

My brother recommended the company as he personally knows the owner and said that he himself has used the company on several occasions. He said the hosting company are good and reliable. Beepweb is the name of the company.

In terms of file size, I haven't really applied any restrictions but I have limited the amount of images that can be uploaded to 4 images per user.

I haven't thought about increasing it because I didn't realise up until now that 200MB may actually not be enough. I guess I'll contact them tomorrow morning and if it's too pricey to increase the space I'll just have to use a different company.

Looks to that Beepweb only do domains, have they given you the space free ? if so thats why it's so small.

I think you are best looking for a decent host and then pointing your domain at the host.

I think you're right there!

Who would you recommend? I've used Godaddy previously and had a bad experience with them but recently I've seen that they have an offer for unlimited disk space at £5.43 a month. :|

I'm sure everybody has their preferred supplier.. mine is 'bluehost'. Never had problems, unlimted SQL, bandwidth, etc... I pay $4.95/month

May be worth having a look

avoid all the cheap monthly fees for unlimited packages.

they are fine for a blog... but you will be a service provider... many of these hosting services dont allow it in their ToS/AuP (terms) and will decide randomly to terminate your hosting as they see fit. You should have backups to your PC or in the cloud regularly; but the chances are when they delete all your data... you either forgotten to backup or even with the backup there is 40-50 items new since then that are lost!

Have you asked your developer what he'd recommend? I know you said you don't trust him but there is a lot to be said for the hosting being his responsibility or at least.down to him as he recommended it.

That way, if something goes wrong, you don't have the situation where he is blaming the host and the host is saying its his fault while you are stuck in the middle with nowhere to turn. It sounds like that is already starting to happen.

Spot on! That's exactly what is happening right now.

I've asked the developer who he'd recommend. He seems to like Godaddy and Justhost. I've used Godaddy previously and there were many things about them I didn't like. I've also used Justhost before who were actually pretty good.

Hi there,

Have a word with Vidahost, the MD is a member on the forums and they have truly excellent reviews. If your site is growing, has image upload capabilities and is a commerical venture then it would be worth investing in a decent, scalable shared hosting package with them.

You've had some good advice here, we use Heart Internet for over 50 sites and with one exception have never had a problem

Even more confused now!

Spoke to Beepweb, the company currently hosting my site and they said they provide 400MB of FTP storage and I've only used 192MB so far. They said that all MYSQL is separate from this and is unlimited and that the problem is with the web content itself as opposed to the hosting or disk space.

Even more confused now and this God damn developer of mine has made me lose the ounce of sanity I had remaining.

Can anyone advise?

Login to your control panel, it will tell you how much space your site is taking up.

Check where the server is located. If it's not in the UK or there are a zillion other sites hosted on the same server this can cause you problerms as well.

Seems however that you are being sent round the houses by the host/developer. Might be worth dropping the whole lot and finding someone new to look after the site.

My recomendation is to use openmind hosting. The owner, Phil, is a mod here and great bloke.

It sounds like you need access to the hosting control panel so you can personally drill down into the storage data and see for yourself which areas of your allotted space are the biggest, this will show you if databases are included in it, how much image storage is used and so on, and also a load of other stats about bandwidth, web traffic etc.

Anyone can get online for under £10. Domain plus free hosting.

You need limited HTML knowledge. Free web templates are available. My advice is to keep them simple. Flash is a waste of time.

I could recommend some links but I am not sure with me being a newbie I can.

I know I can't post my own web site until I have 15 posts under my belt. :)

First thoughts were maybe that something else was using your quota. Emails saved in mailboxes or server logs for example can quickly eat up space.

However your hosts stats that you're only using 192MB of 400MB. So it would seem you have ample space.

I suggest going back to your web hosting tech support guys and asking what they mean by a problem with the web content. They might be able to give you an error code etc.

Ultimately the stuff you upload to a host is your responsibility, so unfortuenelty it's probably a case of persisting with your dev.

Failing that, you could ask your developer to give you a copy of your files and ask a new host to upload them for you. Most web hosts like ourselves have their own inhouse developers who can help users with this kind of thing.
